Demo Task - Overpaint and Match 3

in OnChainArt2 years ago

Hello, everyone!

I hope you're having a good week so far!

I have yet another rejected job application demo today :D These really started piling up, didn't they?

This one, I really enjoyed making. As usual, I was given two tasks. One, was an overpainting of a 3D figure, and for the second, I was to create a match-3 style game scene.

Task 1 - Overpaint

Let me show you the final result first.

Overpainting is a tedious yet fun part of the art for me. It takes long, requires quite an effort, but often I get lost in the flow and just enjoy the process. It happened with this one, too, especially when I was painting the armor. I loved doing that.

Here's the provided picture;

Must add, this 3d render is not mine. I was provided with this by the company and they asked me to hide their names.

It was my first time painting over something 3D. I was confused about how to approach the process at first. A day went by testing and researching how others do it. At last, I decided on a route.

I was asked to keep the prince's shape, but told I could get in detail. So I cut the pieces out one by one, by colors I'd give them. Arms, legs, skin, couch; that took quite a while but gave a clean result.

Like so. Quite a lot of layers, don't you think? Well, I duplicated them all for backup and set basic colors on them, with either hue/saturation adjustments or color layers.

He looks kind of creepy before the overpaint.

After this part, it was all overpainting and overpainting and overpainting... Enjoyable process nonetheless, but tiring too.

Task 2 - Game Scene

For this part, I took a different style for the sake of speed. I was preparing these in a 1 week time limit after all. The concept was a match-3 game, a character had to be included. So I came up with this.

game-scene.png

Not the usual thing I do. The UI was a first for me. I still liked the result though.

For the most other pieces, like in-game tokens, character and power-up tokens, I took a pretty simple approach. Sketch, lineart, base colors, multiply shadows and overlay light. I think my favorite is the shroom.

Bonus Tasks

There were two bonus tasks. Pretty simple ones, too. A game icon for the store page;

And a live-ops sale screen

I'm still having fun with the fact that I did the coins on the go. I was preparing the page, and I just made a coin and duplicated it. Somehow it worked well.

So, this is how I overpainted as usual and made up a game. Still didn't get the job but, eh. If they didn't like it, they didn't like it. Nothing I can do. I lost my hope on game companies anyway.

I hope at least you people like them!

Thank you! See you later!

This is just stunning. Way too neat and sparkling 😍

Thank you! <3 I've never been one of those artists with loose lines and brushstrokes, I always tend to keep things neat, sometimes unnecessarily hahaha.

Oh I see. Did you draw this or it's sculpted? Or you only just painted

Only the first picture where a prince sits on a throne was given to me as a picture of a 3D sculpture, and I painted over it. The rest, I drew from scratch.

Oh I see! It's lovely

That's some really nice illustrations there. 👍

Don't lose hope you'll find a better job oneday and the wait will be worth it.

I personally suggest why not look into small but DeFi side chain with potential where devs must be looking for a talented person like you!

I'm also into one DeFi sidechain and will tell you if i found it worthy for you!

Thanks for sharing and have a good day my friend.

Thank you! <3 It makes me happy the work is loved!

I don't know much about DeFi, i'm pretty ignorant about the chain platforms :D hive is the only one i'm in. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it.

Hey there.

Random question totally unrelated to this post (Though, the artwork you shared here was as rad as always). Are you at all open to doing a small commission? If not, no worries. But, I figured I would check and see since I think your art style would be great for it :)

Ooooh sorry I'm so late to see this! Yes, i'm up for commissions! I've just got online to make a new post and I was going to mention commissions too, haha. You can mail me if you want to! it's [email protected]
