Charred

I finally minted my first NFT on @NFTShowroom. I just got whitelisted this week and thought of doing a new art to tokenize. I'm still in practice on digital art since I originally only do traditional portrait works in colored pencil. Though I already made quite some digital art, I'm still trying to learn and grasp the medium. Instead of posting my old works there, I opted to go fresh and started conceptualizing.

As of writing this post it's already been two days since I dropped the NFT and I've already sold the first out of three edition to @juliakponsford Thank you so much! I was so thrilled since I wasn't really expecting to get a sell, much more minutes after posting it. 2/3 Editions of "Charred" are still available on my NFT Showrom Gallery.

📌 Inspiration

Photos from Google

This original work was heavily influenced by a scene from the German Netflix series 'Dark'. It is my favorite sci-fi and time travel TV series. In the show, there's this children's room with a turquoise wallpaper on and a chair with shackles and eye covers. The chair channels energy and is used as a time machine. It has been used on children and transported them 33 years in time, but also killed them, shattering their eardrums and charring their eyes in the process. [Dark Wiki] The photos above show what it looked like. That's where I got the idea for this art. Also, I found this stock photo while browsing through Unsplash by Jayson Hinrichsen. It was a really nice portrait shot, so I thought of combining the two and make an art concept out of it.

📌 Work in Progress

When I finally settled with a concept, I started visualizing what the output would look like when I finish it. Since I was thinking of adding the children's wallpaper as a background highlight, might as well recreate it. I found that there are only three characters in the wallpaper, with the two being mirrored along the pattern. I made a 1000x1000 px canvas and drew them individually. When I had them drawn, I took out a clear png and patterned it on another, bigger canvas. I already planned on adding a turquoise background but I was thinking might I change it later on so I just saved a clear background of the pattern. Here's how it look on a turquoise backgroud:

I proceeded then to drawing then main subject. Made a new canvas on ibisPaintX and imported my reference photo, positioned it to fit a nice frame and started drawing from there. I made base layers of everything and just clipped layers on top for adding the colors and definition. I wanted to also add dead flowers to match the charred eyes that I'll add later on, which will also be the main highlight of this art.

After I'm done with the rest of subject, I'm now left with the eyes. I had a really hard time trying to get the charred eyes to look decent here. At first I tried doing some abstract lines of light purple, red, and black on top of each other. Then I tried doing some smoke like brushes, entirely covering the first layers I've made. At some point, it kind of ended where I just dumped abstract strokes here and there until I made it look like what I was aiming for. I finally thought the face was becoming as if it was really burned, so I finished up the part by adding some details. Finally, I fixed some areas that are left out and also added some loose hairstrands. To complete the work, I inserted the wallpaper pattern that I made and filled the background with a turquoise color. And It's done!

Stay whole.
Hello Hive! I'm Khen Kintanar, from Cebu, Philippines and currently at my third year studying Graphic Design at a State University. I love art, and I've been serious about it since 8th grade. For the most part, I draw fan-arts for a hobby, but I also do side commissions. Just recently though, I was thinking about finally doing art originals for good and building my own unique style in the process. I also love reading novels, and my favorite author is Neal Shusterman. I've read most of his books and even had a quote tattooed on my arm. That quote reads "stay whole. I got it when I was 17 and I think somehow, it completes me. I'm 21 now and still haven't achieved anything major yet, but I believe things fall into place at a proper time. Life isn't a race, so just keep going and stay whole. Leave a follow to support me. Thanks!
