Drawing on Kraft Paper: Jonas Kahnwald from Netflix's Dark

in OnChainArt4 years ago (edited)

It's been five months of nothingness from me — but I'm back at it again!

Hello Hive! I haven't been very active lately... actually, since mid April. Got a lot of stuff happening here and there, but I think I'll be doing art blogs again. Really don't want to put some big timeline gaps here. Plus, I really do like blogging my art for keeps and memories.

Everything's new... so much to adjust to.

One reason that I decided to get back and make a new blog here on Hive is the active hive.ph community. It's just that I've been hearing lots of news lately about new members joining and the community getting active again. Also wanna keep track of amazing artists on here! :))

Anyways, still got a lot more to explore. I'm kind of still confused about communities. I'll just $dmor. Might also use 3speak on my next posts since I'm also doing digital art and keeping time-lapses lately. Now finally, here's an art blog:

Drawing Jonas Kahnwald (played by Louis Hofmann) from the best time travel series on Netflix: "Dark"

Dark is Netflix's one of the best supernatural, science fiction series. The narrative is mind-bending and utterly complex, but you could see how well it has been planned and how much time has been put into the production and creation of this show. read more...

Preparing the materials:

For this drawing, I'm using my prismacolor colored pencils and a kraft paper. Honestly it's just a brown folder but I prefer calling it kraft. Like it much than regular kraft paper since it's thicker and doesn't buckle when layered heavily. Also used an HB pencil for sketching, ruler for drawing the grids, a kneaded eraser, and a white ink pen.

Drawing Process:

1. I started by drawing gridlines for better proportion. Using the HB pencil, I lightly sketched my reference while keeping track of the gridlines. I usually draw sketches like this in no time since I'm already so used to using grid method.

2. After doing the sketch, I'm on to coloring. I always start by drawing the eye, one after the other. It's not uncommon to start in eyes first, some also prefer drawing them last. Looking at the reference photo, I took note of all the colors that I think is there. Utilizing all colors that seem to show up to achieve a natural realistic effect. It's a tip that I learned from watching video tutorials on youtube. Just carefully blocking a light blue base on the iris, and detailing the rest with the darkest blue and black. I used light peach to block some base skin surrounding the eye towards the brow. Then I filled the brow strands using shades of browns. Layered some pink and oranges, and used a white gel pen to add some highlight on the iris.

3. Now working on the other eye, I applied the same steps I did on the first one. Drawing the forehead and some skin areas surrounding the eye, adding some details along the way. For the nose, I filled the area with the same base color as the skin and finished that off by layering more saturated ones. Drawing the lips and the rest of the face, just looking at the reference so I'll know where to add details. Sure it'll not be as exactly copied, but what's important is putting as much detail as possible. It may seem easy but I had a lot of pauses throughout the process trying to figure out if I've drawn it right.

4. In doing the hair I first layered the bright oranges and the light colors then added the mid tone color in which I picked the ginger root color, I think. Yeah that's it. Then added some details using browns.

5. This is my favorite part. The scar on his neck is what makes this drawing special to me since it symbolizes his character. I blocked in light purple and blue as base just to match the light from the blue shirt that I will add later on. Layered it with skin tones and pinks, then lined down the scar with reds and browns.

6. Just adding some more details here. Looking at the reference for some parts that need correction.

7. Lastly, the shirt. Started with the mid tone blue first as base then defined some of the light parts using white and light blue. Layered darker blues and black on top of that to define the shadows and completed the rest with some red and yellow for the shirt accent. And it's done!

That's it! Thanks :)

Finally shared a blog of one of my recent drawings. It's so good to be back at writing and sharing some stuff that I know while also creating valuable content for the community. I honestly want to boost up my reputation since it's been stuck at 50'ish for like years lol. I'm here since early 2018 and I can't even raise it. It's my fault anyways for not grinding and being less productive. Well, might just start racking up for more art blogs now. Best of luck to me!

Have a great day! :))
