It's okay to trace... | Vexel Portrait using ibisPaint X [Timelapse]

in OnChainArt4 years ago (edited)
Hello! Back again with a new art blog! I'm actually quite busy right now, since I'm still studying college. Though despite that, I still manage to divide my time and write blogs. Doing task schedules of the things I need to do. Making sure that l catch up with every deadline while also being productive at the same time.

It's okay to trace...

Since I'm an artist who rely mostly on guidelines, I always use grids on my traditional drawings - on portraits. As for digital ones, I trace it. Does that make feel like I'm less of an artist because I always do tracing? Of course not. I mean, art has no rules and drawing without guide is indeed a good practice. For some, tracing might be cheating but to me it's really not. I've heard lots of word about tracing being less of an art but that doesn't bother me anymore now. As long as I do my best at every piece that I do and try to improve everytime.

In this blog I'll be doing another vexel art portrait using ibisPaint X. If you'll, notice I've actually cleaned up my post a bit and added a few touch of improvement. So, enjoy reading through! :)

Vexel Art

By the way this is a commission piece for someone I know online. I've posted the timelapse video of the process on 3speak. Great thing about ibisPaint is that it automatically records the entire process and can be easily exported to mp4 ranging from 10 seconds up to 3 minutes.

Progress

So, upon opening ibisPaint, first thing will be setting up the canvas. I made a 2k px canvas - not so big 'cause my phone will be so laggy then. Just enough to make decent quality output and to hold the layers I need. After that, I began tracing the shapes of the hair, face, bust, and the clothing. This will become my base to work on for the rest of the process. It will also be easier to color them later on by clipping layers on top of the bases. Then I drew the entire eyes and eyebrows.

I began doing the face by adding clipped layer on the base that I made earlier. Using the airbrush tool - just adding light skin tones and layering oranges and pinks. I made separate base layers for the lips and nose, then used clipping to airbrush and define them. Changed the hair to white and clipped a purple gradient to it for a dreamy look. I also added white highlights to glow up the face and bring life to it.

Just tryna finish up the face here. Defined the lips by airbrushing more layers. I made separate layers for both upper and lower lip earlier so I can paint them separately. Also added some freckles using the particle brush, up to her neck.

Okay I'll confess something. It's already obvious though, actually. I just picked up some free stock image flower wallpaper and clipped it to the cloth layer that I made. Doesn't matter anyways 'cause it looked amazing after I added it. I'll try to actually drawing them next time. Oh, added a circle accent as well. She's already looking like an angel.

And it's done! Just added my logo for the other copy that I took out. I don't know if I'll stick to that one or make another. Also adjusted the saturation a bit and made some edit.

Anyways, that's the end of it. Hope you didn't mind my bad thought expressing. Hah! If you read this far, thank you so much :) I'll do more of this so stay tuned by following me! Also hit the reblog if you enjoyed reading - I doubt it though lol. Have a great day!

Some of my Digital Art blogs:

About me:
Hello! Just wanna share a piece of me. I'm a graphic design student who loves both art and crypto. Art is life to me - it's the only thing I consider myself to be good at. I even lack the best writing skill - sorry for that, but I always try my best to improve for content's sake. Also a big fan of quality - it matters a lot to me. Most of what I do with my art revolves aroud the metanet. Crypto is also life to me. I've been involved to the space since I was 17. Obsessing with art alongside bitcoin, yes that's me. I'm 21 now and still hasn't achieved anything yet, but I believe things will fall into place for me at a proper time. Life isn't a race right? So I'll just keep going and enjoy what I do at the meantime. Leave a follow to support me :))

Beautiful work.

Galing! Congrats for the art well done. :)

Me too, I always rely in guidelines especially in my digital arts so I trace my reference photo. I tried not to but I still find it difficult.
