Art Attack #191: Viking TacoCat going Berserk?

Hey Hive!

We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my drawings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!

We're continuing on with my series of sharing the custom subscriber badges I made for my Twitch channel! After a month of streaming I was fortunate enough to become a Twitch affiliate which comes with a lot of perks like getting money through viewer subscriptions, ad revenue and the like. Subscribers get benefits such as an ad-free viewing experience but also access to unique channel emotes and a special subscriber badge next to their name in chat!

Since you get to customise the subscriber badges I thought this was a perfect chance to get creative! I wanted a consistent theme across the sub badges and I thought making it gaming-related would be appropriate. More specifically, I wanted my badges to be different classes/jobs you'd see in classic RPGs.

So these were the ones I made and we covered until the 1-Year badge and after the first year the badges get fewer, at 6 month intervals so I had more time to design them.

For the 1.5-Year badge I thought of making a Priest since healers are pretty common in RPGs and one of the staple classes too.

For references I wanted to go off Final Fantasy's classic White Mage look since it looks pretty cute, but since I had already done a hooded look for the Ninja I wanted something slightly different. So I settled on a priest hat instead, and thought a staff would be a nice match for the accessory.

This was the sketch I did:

It seemed pretty simple enough, with most of the colours being white, so I went to outlining.

I coloured in the hat and made sure that the cross was very visible so it would be seen in the chat at 58px.

image.png

And last but not least was the staff of course. Initially the sketch was a little small so I distorted it a little bit to maximise the 500x500px and I think it came out pretty well.

I thought the paw peeking out was a little awkward-looking but I had to make it come out to hold the staff and I wasn't sure how else to draw that. I worked on this quite a while ago and looking back on it now it doesn't look too bad, but I might just change a few things to make the lines smoother and cleaner.

For the next design which was the 2-Year badge I wanted something special so I actually dedicated this to one of my longtime subscribers who is also my mod. He goes by chai193 on Twitch but his IGN is commonly bersker which I think it supposed to be Berserker. It's also an RPG class that I had yet to do and I thought it would be cool to make that the next design.

Typically Berserkers have a viking look to them and wield dual axes so I wanted a classic viking-style helmet and the axes in a pretty badass position. These were the references I found:

And this was the sketch I came up with which I thought was really cool. I also added in a beard and mustache because I thought it would be appropriate to match.

Then I worked on the outline:

And finally coloured in the helmet and axes colour sourcing from one of the references.

After colouring in everything I added some shadows and highlights and we get this!

image.png

I thought this looked pretty dang cool and had that badass image I was wanted for a Berserker. I also added a little blood splatter on the axes to give that extra "don't mess with me" vibe. I did this a while ago and I think this is one the best ones I've done to this day. I really liked how the helmet came out.

Here's the timelapse for these two badges:

Two very different badges but I think they're both good in their own right. If there's one thing I'm learning I think my designs have definitely improved which is good at least.

Hope you're enjoying this series and thanks so much for reading!
