Hivechess Tournament Round 2: @tungphong was the winner!

in The Chess Community2 years ago (edited)

Dear Chess fans,

the second round of Season 9 was a 4+1 Blitz arena with again 23 players - actually more, but a few players (including @rafaelaquino (ajedrezclub2t)) had 0 or less than 3 games and thus were not counted! The average rating was 1892, slightly higher than in round 1! And again we could welcome two new players, @giacomone (KingJames4) and @franu (Tz995) - the latter one formerly known as "aztecx" from old Steemchess times!

@samostically and @giacomone (KingJames4) streamed the tournament. Check out their videos here and here!

Yesterday was finally time for a new winner (in the Friday series): @tungphong (blackswan21) didn´t lose a single game and won with a huge lead. Since @eniolw didn´t show up and @sawko could play only a few games, he had no equal opponent. Runner up was @pamboy27, follwed by @samostically as 3rd. Also @vjap55 had, after a few rather unlucky rounds, this time a good 4th place. Congrats to All!

Fortunately I played much better than last time. Despite my opponents had an average rating of 2065, I lost only 3 games and had a - for me - unusual performance of 2214. To land in the Top 10 is nowadays with this many strong players already an achievement!

The rules you can look up in the announcement post.

With a second and a first place @tungphong (blackswan21) could well-deservedly grab the lead from @eniolw who - due to his missing in round 2 - plunged to rank 11. This shows how big the impact of participation is with this new point system. @samostically, who is in a flow currently (he won the last CBL round!), could - 6 points behind - jump to rank 2, ex aequo in points with @jaki01. Also @vjap55 and @pamboy could gain some places due to their good performance today.
While the spots 2 to 6 are only separated by 5 points, there is then already a gap of 7 points to the other ranks. But 7 rounds to go and everything is possible still...

See you all next week!

Indeed, winning these arena tournaments is so difficult for the reasons you just pointed out, it's more likely to win for fast players, but in the flip side we still having fun xd

Yes, this time I just berserked and didn't care at all about the quality of the games. I will do that in Arena mode from now on ... My problem is just that others do that, too ... just faster than me. :)

Well, I understand you, I started beserking initially and I wasn't able to meet the speed while playing with a mouse. Am really fast with my mobile, But using a PC now, if I get beserked,I don't berserk back and I try to win faster (I berserk sometimes if the rating gap is much and if I play white).

But I noticed you play really well and lose on time, remember that game you binded me in my pirc opening, I still won on time. But I agree with you that @tungphong has benefited more from your speed issues, those endgames were painful.

Well, I am accustomed to it: I know that if I cannot reach a big middle game advantage, I will probably lose on time or make a big mistake due to time pressure. :)
Swiss-system tournaments without the berserk option are much easier for me to play, and I also like it, if the time control in Arena mode is so fast but with increment (like for example the 2+1) that the berserkers have problems to get enough points.
Of course rapid chess would be optimal for my playing style but I understand that's way too time consuming.

It's completely alright for me if the fast young players get the prizes (they can use the money very well, I guess), but sometimes from a chess players point of view it's annoying to throw away so many games in which I cannot convert my advantages.

Yeah, I couldn't make it :S

Congrats to the winners.

We can see the benefits and drawbacks of this experimental scoring system.

As for the results tallied in the table, they're perfect! Only a minor detail: vjap55 average performance should be 2030.5.

Thanks so much and that you spotted it. To update the table in Excel and then update on peakd takes in the meantime 2 full hours concentrated work! So I am glad for a doublecheck!

You're welcome. It's true, it takes time. The good thing is programming can help us :)

@stayoutoftherz ,this is a lot of work! Thanks for this. This new system means one has to play every round, the uncertainty is high. But again, it means everyone has a chance. I'm glad to be back in the top 4, hopefully I remain there.

Hi @stayoutoftherz ,I noticed you didn't play today's tournament.

Yes, I came too late. It started 1h earlier than usual.

Wohoo, I moved up a couple places. Also you tagged the wrong person I'm @b0s not @bos. Common mistake

Wow ,I didn't know you are playing, this is fantastic! Brother!

Yeah, I started towards the end of last season

Indeed, you played well!
The typo is corrected! Thanks.

Awesome tournament it was, lots of good players! Thank You @stayoutoftherz for organizing this. :-)

Last Friday I was not able to play, but this Friday I did and I really enjoyed the tournament, I am not a fan of arena tournaments, however, I enjoyed it a lot and it was very dynamic. I hope to improve my performance for the next tournament.

The next one will be a Swiss again :)
