We know that the filler in an anime is not always well seen, I particularly have a divided thought about them, but before delving into that point let's talk a little about what is considered filler in a story.
The first thing to consider is that when a studio acquires a license to animate a manga, it comes with certain "benefits" if you can call it that way, many of them have to do with modifying the story or adapting it according to the audience, Yu-Gi-Oh! is one of the most notable examples of this. This is why it is inevitable that filler takes place in the stories.
Filler are usually chapters that are generally not in the original manga, many of them are introduced to expand the development of a character or simply to show other facets that the mangaka did not give us to know in his story, so seeing them or not is up to each person's taste, but many of them are not usually necessary.
Now, leaving this clear, although I am convinced that most of you here know it, I want to talk a little about one of the best fillers or perhaps the best filler in the history of anime, and I'm referring to the saga of Asgard in Saint Seiya, its inclusion was excellent and served as a bridge to link with the saga of Poseidon.
If you have read the classic manga, the canonical order is, Sanctuary, Poseidon and Hades, followed by Next Dimension in the present day, although I have learned of some inclusions by Kurumada that would change many things in the already known story, but that is a topic for another time. The truth is, the Asgard saga plays an important role in the Saint Seiya animated universe.
The most notable and perhaps one of the most overlooked, is the use of armor restored by the blood of the Golden Knights, if this saga had not existed there would be things that we could not understand from the first entry in the battle against Poseidon, it also showed a little more about the personality of Hyoga, and delved powerfully into the sacrificial life of Shiru.
These are just some elements to highlight, but another important aspect that cannot be overlooked is the great attention given to the character of the bronze knights, it was not like in other series fillers where the characters are ridiculed, but the essence of the characters was maintained and the final work resulted in a better development of each one of them. For this reason and for its continuity to the original story is that this filler is so appreciated not only by the fans but also by the critics.
Honestly when I saw it for the first time I had no idea what was canon or not, but when one begins to have a critical thinking things change, and in my case, I appreciate the original, but in turn I also receive with good eyes the works that add to the quality of a production, and in this case I have no choice but to admire how this filler was made, exciting battles, spectacular plot and a spectacular soundtrack.
I definitely think that the Asgard saga is unique in its class, the warrior gods had a top quality design in their armor, also their attacks and personalities, each of them despite being villains were well developed, and it was impossible not to empathize with them even though they were only defending a goddess controlled by Poseidon.
I want to conclude my post making a comparison with this production and the current ones regarding the use of filler because honestly I know few where their filler is favorable, for example Bleach which in its time was a remarkable anime its filler is completely crazy. I think this Asgard saga should be taken as a reference for all those companies that adapt manga and include filler in their stories.

Sabemos que el relleno en un anime no siempre es bien visto, particularmente tengo un pensamiento dividido sobre ellos, pero antes de ahondar en ese punto hablemos un poco acerca de lo que se considera relleno en una historia.
Lo primero que debemos considerar es que cuando un estudio adquiere una licencia para animar un manga, esta viene con ciertos “beneficios” si se le puede llamar de esa manera, muchos de ellos tienen que ver con la modificación de la historia o la adaptación de la misma acorde a la audiencia, Yu-Gi-Oh! es uno de los ejemplos más notables de esto. Razón por la cual es inevitable que el relleno tenga lugar en las historias.
El relleno suelen ser capítulos que generalmente no están en el manga original, muchos de ellos son introducidos para ampliar el desarrollo de un personaje o simplemente para mostrar otras facetas que el mangaka no nos dio a conocer en su historia, por lo que verlos o no ya es del gusto de cada quien, pero muchos de ellos no suelen ser necesarios.
Ahora bien, dejando esto claro, aunque estoy convencido que la mayoría acá lo sabe, quiero hablar un poco acerca de uno de los mejores rellenos o quizás el mejor relleno en la historia de los anime, y me estoy refiriendo a la saga de Asgard en Saint Seiya, su inclusión nada forzada fue excelente y sirvió como un puente para enlazar con la saga de Poseidón.
Si te has leído el manga clásico, el orden canónico es, el Santuario, Poseidón y Hades, seguido de Next Dimensión en la actualidad, aunque me he enterado de algunas inclusiones de Kurumada que cambiarían muchas cosas en la historia ya conocida, pero eso es tema para otra ocasión. Lo cierto es, que la saga de Asgard juega un papel importante en el universo animado de Saint Seiya.
El más notable y quizás uno de los más pasados por alto, es el uso de las armaduras restauradas por la sangre de los Caballeros dorados, de no haber existido esta saga habrían cosas que no podríamos comprender de primera entrada en la batalla contra Poseidón, también se mostró un poco más acerca de la personalidad de Hyoga, y se ahondo poderosamente en la vida sacrificial de Shiru.
Estos son solo algunos elementos a destacar, pero otro aspecto importante que no se puede pasar por alto es la gran atención que se le dio al carácter de los caballeros de bronce, no fue como en rellenos de otras series donde ridiculizan a los personajes, sino que se mantuvo la esencia de los mismos y el trabajo final resulto en ser un mejor desarrollo de cada uno de ellos. Por este motivo y por su continuidad a la historia original es que este relleno es tan apreciado no solo por los fans sino por la crítica.
Honestamente cuando la vi por primera vez no tenía ni la menor idea de lo que era canon o no, pero cuando ya uno comienza a tener un pensamiento crítico las cosas cambian, y en mi caso, aprecio lo original, pero a su vez también recibo con buenos ojos los trabajos que suman a la calidad de una producción, y en este caso no me queda de otra que admirar como este relleno fue realizado, batallas emocionantes, trama espectacular y una banda sonora espectacular.
Definitivamente pienso que la saga de Asgard es única en su clase, los dioses guerreros contaron con un diseño de primera calidad en sus armaduras, también sus ataques y personalidades, cada uno de ellos a pesar de ser villanos fueron bien desarrollados, y fue imposible no empatizar con ellos a pesar de que solo defendían a una diosa controlada por Poseidón.
Quiero concluir mi post haciendo una comparación con esta producción y las actuales en cuanto al uso del relleno porque honestamente conozco pocas donde su relleno sea favorable, por ejemplo Bleach que en su momento fue un anime notable su relleno es una locura completamente. Pienso que esta saga de Asgard debería ser tomada como referencia para todas aquellas compañías que adaptan mangas e incluyen relleno en sus historias.

I totally agree with you, the Asgard saga from my point of view has better plots and side stories than the Poseidon saga which I find more boring. The armor design and flashbacks are also very good.

Yes my friend, Poseidon's was very bland really, the marine generals mostly very weak and very little is known of their origins. Plus how they beat Poseidon, a bad closer.
What good memories of Saint Seiya. Indeed I remember Asgard very well and yes, the level of depth of that saga is brutal and look that all those that make up the anime are brutal but I would believe that it is one of the ones I like the most. I watched this anime when I was about 10 years old and I rewatched it as an adult; the difference is abysmal in everything you appreciate and understand. Anime seen in our childhood we have to watch them again to understand them better.
