Shadowverse (Anime Review) – This is Just Going to be Me Mocking This Show

Sometimes a show comes along that is just bad in all the worst ways, making the show very boring to even talk about. Other times you get a show bad in all the right ways that just make the show a joy to watch. And than there is Shadowverse, a show that is just fun to use as a punching bag. It's been a while since I've had a show like this, so here we go.

The show focuses on Hiro finally getting a cellphone so he can play a mobile cardgame called Shadowverse with his friends. You may ask yourself how this game works, and after six episodes of this show I still can't tell you how the game works. Each episode focuses on a different game Hiro has, so by episode six I have witnessed six duels. It was episode three I learned cards have a cost in order to play them. After two full games, I had no idea there was even a cost associated with summoning monsters, I just though they were slapping them down. And, despite having seen it happen, episode five you learn that only monsters with Rush can attack the turn they come out.

Worse yet, you don't even really see half of the duel happening, it just kind of montages the whole thing until they get to the parts that are suppose to be intense. Combine these two issues together, and all that is really happening is the characters are telling you their situation is rough without actually being able to show you why it is a dire situation. It's borderline impossible to care as a result.

And than there is the theatrics. Every time a match starts the characters do a full on Sailor Moon style transformation sequence, only their clothes aren't changing, they are just setting their phone in a holder on their wrist. When they draw cards, they are swiping their phone, but they are moving their fingers from their phone all the way out in front of their face as if they were dramatically drawing a card from their deck, and it all looks incredibly stupid.

Their is hardly a story set up by episode six, so I can't really comment about the main plot, but after six episodes of this nothing the show could do would be worthwhile. Season one of Yugioh Duel Monsters makes more sense than this show, I never want to hear all of y'all talking shit on my boy Yami ever gain.

I didn't know the Shadowverse card game had an anime?

Until three episodes in I didn't know this anime had a card game. :p

The show launched this season, so it's a really new one.

Yeah Kripp used to play Shadowverse sometimes when he’s not doing Hearthstone.

The game has been around for several years.
