Hello everyone, Otaku friends, dear community of The Anime Realm, I hope you are all doing great. This time, after a few months, I was able to finish watching the 2023 remake of Rurouni Kenshin! Some may know it as Samurai X, when this remake was announced, I had a lump in my throat, a pure mix of nerves and excitement... you know how it is with these comebacks of classic 90s anime: lately we've seen every attempt that, simply... well, left a ton of nostalgic hearts shattered... so, the million-dollar question we all had was: was this new version going to do justice to one of the most beloved shonen in history?

First of all, for those new to the world of the wandering samurai, the vibe is super direct but it hooks you right in. We follow Kenshin Himura, a guy with a legendary and bloody past as the “hitokiri battousai,” an assassin who had no equal in the Bakumatsu era. The poor guy lives tormented by all the lives he took, so he hangs up his killer sword –or rather, grabs one with the blade upside down, and becomes a rurouni, an ownerless samurai, dedicated to protecting the innocent and cleansing their sins, all without killing anyone. It’s the classic redemption arc, and it’s a super easy foundation for new viewers to get hooked right away, which I think is a really clever move. Now, let's move on to what for me is THE star of this remake: how faithful it is to the original manga. When I say faithful, I mean it. It feels like they took the manga's panels and brought them to the screen with tremendous care, and this means we have the story in its purest and most solid form.

Remember the '90s anime? With all the love I have for it, let’s be honest, it had its fair share of kind of weird filler, most of that stuff, looking at it without the lens of nostalgia, was pretty weak… this new adaptation, thank God!, is great, it’s all canon, all the time… in fact, it goes a step further and even includes some short stories that are canon and extra details that really add a ton to the original story… they even managed to explain the whole historical context better –that complicated transition from the Tokugawa shogunate to the Meiji era– and the plot twists and turns, much better than the old version did, but only by a long shot! Now we understand much more clearly Kenshin's role as a revolutionary working in the shadows against the feudal government, and the whole Meiji Restoration thing, the political problem and how groups like Sanosuke's Sekihotai or Saito's Shinsengumi fit into the whole picture... it's just... a gem, people!

Hola a todos amigos Otakus, querida comunidad de The Anime Realm, espero que estén super bien, en esta ocasión, luego de algunos meses, pude terminar de ver el remake de Rurouni Kenshin, el de 2023! algunos lo pueden conocer como Samurai X, cuando anunciaron este remake, yo andaba con un nudo en la garganta, pura mezcla de nervios y emoción.. es que ya saben cómo es la cosa con estos regresos de animes clásicos de los 90: últimamente hemos visto cada intento que, simplemente… bueno, dejando un montón de corazones nostálgicos hechos pedazos.. así que, la pregunta del millón que todos teníamos era: ¿esta nueva versión le iba a hacer justicia a uno de los shonen más queridos de la historia?

Primero que nada, para los que recién se suman al mundo del samurái vagabundo, la onda es súper directa pero te engancha al toque.. seguimos a Kenshin Himura, un tipo con un pasado legendario y bien sangriento como el "hitokiri battousai", un asesino que no tenía comparación en la era Bakumatsu.. el pobre vive atormentado por todas las vidas que se llevó, así que cuelga su espada asesina –o, mejor dicho, agarra una con el filo al revés, y se convierte en un rurouni un samurai sin dueño, dedicado a proteger a los inocentes y a limpiar sus pecados, todo sin matar a nadie, es el clásico arco de redención, y es una base súper fácil para que los nuevos espectadores se enganchen al toque, lo que me parece una jugada inteligentísima. Ahora, pasemos a lo que para mí es LA estrella de este remake: qué tan fiel es al manga original, cuando digo fiel, lo digo en serio, eh.. se siente como si hubieran agarrado las viñetas del manga y las hubieran pasado a la pantalla con un cariño tremendo, y esto significa que tenemos la historia en su forma más pura y sólida.

Se acuerdan del anime de los 90? Con todo el amor que le tengo, seamos honestos, tuvo su buena dosis de relleno medio raro, la mayoría de esas cosas, viéndolas sin los lentes de la nostalgia, eran bastante flojitas.. esta nueva adaptación, ¡gracias a Dios!, es genial, es todo canon, todo el tiempo.. de hecho, va un paso más allá y hasta mete algunas historias cortitas que son canon y detalles extra que de verdad le suman un montón a la historia original.. incluso se las ingeniaron para explicar mejor todo el contexto histórico –esa transición complicada del shogunato Tokugawa a la era Meiji– y los enredos de la trama, mucho mejor de lo que lo hizo la versión vieja, ¡pero por lejos! Ahora entendemos mucho más claro el papel de Kenshin como un revolucionario que trabajaba en las sombras contra el gobierno feudal, y toda la movida de la Restauración Meiji, el problemon político y cómo grupos como el Sekihotai de Sanosuke o el Shinsengumi de Saito encajan en todo el panorama.. es que, simplemente… ¡una joyita, gente!

This remake has practically already hinted that it’s going to go all the way, which means FINALLY, FINALLYYYY we’re going to see the arcs that the 90s anime never got around to animating. For a lot of us who grew up with the original anime, it’s a chance to see the true and complete ending to Kenshin’s journey come to fruition. Honestly, I can’t wait to see how they handle it. That alone makes this remake worth GOLD. The animation is being done by Liden Films, and let’s be honest, if you were expecting something on the level of Kimetsu no Yaiba or Jujutsu Kaisen, you might want to dial back your expectations. From what I’ve seen, Liden Films is a studio that always delivers… decent work, they’re not one of those studios that go all out with super produced animation… they tend to go for the “average quality” thing, let’s say.

That being said, for Rurouni Kenshin, I think they’ve done a respectable job, the action sequences, which are the bread and butter of this series, are generally fluid and sometimes even surprise you in a good way, the sword fights can be quite “intense”, with a good sense of speed and impact, they managed to avoid that CGI-laden wave that ruined other remakes, which was a HUGE relief for me, I swear. It’s not going to win any awards for innovative animation, but it does its job, and it does it well. Now, as for the art style, this was a topic of conversation when the first images came out.. the new series adapts Watsuki’s current drawing style, which is quite a bit cleaner and more defined than his work from the 90s, think finer lines, slightly different character proportions.. at first, I saw a lot of mixed opinions.

Some felt that it looked a bit "childish" or "too cute", especially when compared to the more "badass" designs from the 90s... there were even some criticisms, like people who thought Kaoru's eyes were too big haha, personally, although it took me a bit to get used to, I ended up getting a taste for the vibe of the art throughout these episodes, it's a clean look, and the character designs, although different, are still Kenshin and his friends.

Esta nueva versión prácticamente ya dió a entender que va a llegar hasta el final, ¡lo que significa que POR FIN, POR FINNNN vamos a ver los arcos que el anime de los 90 nunca llegó a animar.. para muchísimos de nosotros que crecimos con el anime original, es la oportunidad de ver el verdadero y completo final del viaje de Kenshin hecho realidad.. sinceramente, me muero de ganas de ver cómo lo manejan. Ya solo por eso, este remake vale ORO.. la animación corre por cuenta de Liden Films, y seamos honestos, miren: si esperaban algo nivel Kimetsu no Yaiba o Jujutsu Kaisen, quizás tengan que bajarle un cambio a las expectativas, Liden Films, por lo que yo he visto, es un estudio que siempre entrega… un trabajo decente, no son de esos que tiran la casa por la ventana con animación súper producida.. suelen ir por el carril de "calidad promedio", digamos.

Dicho esto, para Rurouni Kenshin, creo que han hecho un trabajo respetable, las secuencias de acción, que son el pan nuestro de cada día en esta serie, en general son fluidas y a veces hasta te sorprenden para bien, las peleas de espadas pueden ser bien "intensas", con buena sensación de velocidad y de impacto, lograron esquivarle a esa onda cargada de CGI que arruinó otros remakes, lo cual fue un alivio GIGANTE para mí, les juro. No va a ganar premios por animación innovadora, pero cumple su función, y la cumple bien.. ahora, el estilo de arte, esto fue tema de conversación, cuando salieron las primeras imágenes.. la nueva serie adapta el estilo de dibujo actual de Watsuki, que es bastante más limpio y definido que su trabajo de los 90, piensen en líneas más finitas, proporciones de personajes un toque diferentes.. al principio, vi un montón de opiniones cruzadas.

Algunos sentían que se veía un poco "infantil" o "demasiado tierno", especialmente si lo comparabas con los diseños más "rudos" de los 90.. incluso hubo críticas puntuales, como gente a la que los ojos de Kaoru le parecían demasiado grandes jaja, personalmente, aunque me costó un poco acostumbrarme, le terminé agarrando el gustito a la onda del arte a lo largo de estos episodios, es un look limpio, y los diseños de los personajes, aunque distintos, siguen siendo Kenshin y sus amigos.

But where I DO have my complaint, and it's with the visuals, is the color palette, let's see, I felt it... ugh, it almost attacks you because it's so bright... "Shrill" is a word that crossed my mind several times, like it screams in your face, for a story that delves into dark themes and that takes place in a time where there wasn't even electric light everywhere, the colors often felt too ¡BUM!, too vibrant, even the night scenes sometimes seemed like they had spotlights on them... I, personally, would have preferred colors that were a little more muted, more "ambient", something that would give more strength to the rawness and the drama, you know what I mean? Obviously, this is personal taste, but for me, sometimes it didn't seem to fit with the tone of the story they were telling... BUT, one decision that I applaud STAND UP, people, is that they removed those moments of comedy that cut short the whole experience or in the tense or serious scenes.

The manga, and the 90s anime, often had Kenshin making faces, doing those chibi antics right in the middle of something dramatic… which was sometimes cute, yes, but it broke the whole atmosphere. This remake takes out almost all of that, and the story feels more serious all the time, and lets the dramatic tension build as it should, much better! Kenshin himself feels a touch more serious, and for me, that decision is great! Okay, now we come to the elephant in the room, and for me, the BIG disappointment of this remake: the music. The soundtrack of the 90s Samurai X is LEGENDARY, it's spectacular, people.

It's one of those that stays burned into the heads of a whole generation of fans… every opening, every ending, every battle theme was EPIC and it nailed the emotion of the scene just right… the new one, on the other hand… feels like it goes with too much of a typical atmosphere, as if it's afraid of being heard, of being noticed. The songs are "okay," technically they work, but they lack impact. There's no song that makes you say "what a song!" that stands out or that gives you goosebumps at key moments... it's just... there, in the background, without adding much. This was a real kick in the gut, really, especially because the music was KEY to the vibe of the original. The new openings and endings are... okay, some of the ending songs even have lyrics that deal with Kenshin's problems, but I kept waiting for more.

Pero donde SÍ tengo mi queja, y es con los visuales, es la paleta de colores, a ver yo la sentí… uff, casi que te ataca de lo brillante que es.. "Chillona" es una palabra que se me cruzó por la cabeza varias veces, como que te grita en la cara, para una historia que se mete en temas oscuros y que pasa en una época donde no había ni luz eléctrica por todos lados, los colores muchas veces se sentían demasiado ¡PUM!, demasiado vibrantes, hasta las escenas de noche a veces parecían que tenían reflectores encima.. yo, personalmente, hubiera preferido colores un poquito más apagados, más de "ambiente", algo que le diera más fuerza a lo crudo y al drama, ¿me entienden? Obvio, esto es gusto personal, pero para mí, a veces como que no pegaba con el tono de la historia que estaban contando.. PERO, una decisión que aplaudo DE PIE, gente, es que sacaron esos momentos de comedia que te cortaban todo la experiencia o en las escenas tensas o serias.

El manga, y el anime de los 90, muchas veces tenían a Kenshin poniendo caras, haciendo esas payasadas chibi justo en medio de algo dramático.. que a veces era simpático, sí, pero te rompía toda la atmósfera. Este remake saca casi todo eso, y la historia se siente más seria de corrido, y deja que la tensión dramática crezca como tiene que ser, ¡mucho mejor! El Kenshin mismo se siente un toque más serio, y para mí, estupenda esa decisión! Bueno, y ahora llegamos al elefante en la habitación, y para mí, la GRAN decepción de este remake: la música.. la banda sonora del Samurai X de los 90 es LEYENDA, es espectacular, gente.

Es de esas que se te quedan grabadas a fuego en la cabeza de toda una generación de fans.. cada opening, cada ending, cada tema de batalla era ÉPICO y te clavaba la emoción de la escena justito.. la nueva, en cambio… se siente como que va con demasiado ambiente típico, asi como si tuviera miedo de que la escuchen, de hacerse notar. Las canciones están "bien", técnicamente sirven, pero les falta impacto, no hay un tema que digas "¡qué temazo!" que se destaque o que te ponga la piel de gallina en los momentos clave.. simplemente… está ahí, de fondo, sin sumar mucho que digamos.. esto fue una patada en el alma, en serio, más que nada porque la música era CLAVE para la onda del original. Los nuevos openings y endings están… ok, algunos temas del final hasta tienen letras que tienen que ver con los problemas de Kenshin, pero seguí esperando más.

Okay, as for how things were handled, the episodes where we meet Yahiko and Sanosuke, for example, make it pretty clear why they join Kenshin and Kaoru and what's up with them... the fights against Jine and the Oniwabanshu were definitely the best... BUT, I have my things to say about how they handled the last few episodes of this first part, specifically 22, 23, and 24, when Saito shows up and Kenshin gets ready for Kyoto... those episodes felt, ugh, surprisingly rushed, like they were going at full speed, KEY moments, like Saito's fight with Sanosuke and even Kenshin's final fight with Saito, didn't have the build-up or emotional weight they deserved, crazy... And then, Kenshin's farewell felt rushed, and they even shoved the end credits right on top of an important part So, after all this sermon, is it still worth watching the new Rurouni Kenshin?

Despite my complaints, especially about the music and the kind of weird pacing of the last few chapters of this first batch, my answer is a GIANT YES, it gives you a clean, direct, and most importantly, COMPLETE adaptation of the manga... for anyone who hasn't read the original, or for those of us who are like me, this is a GREAT opportunity... it's the chance to experience Kenshin's story without the filler and with the promise of seeing it through to the end as it should be... it's a good remake, and one that I think successfully revives the franchise for a new generation, while at the same time giving long-time fans something they've been waiting for decades... I'd give it a solid 7.5/10. The fidelity and promise of the full story draws you in, the animation delivers, and the main story is as strong as ever. The points I give it down are mostly for the soundtrack, which left me feeling a bit down, and the pacing issues in the final chapters. But I'm HOOKED. And well, that's all for today. A ver, en cuanto a cómo estuvo dirigida la cosa, los capítulos donde conocemos a Yahiko y a Sanosuke, por ejemplo, te dejan clarito por qué se unen a Kenshin y Kaoru y qué onda con ellos.. las peleas contra Jine y los Oniwabanshu fueron, sin duda, de lo mejorcito.. PERO, tengo mis cositas que decir sobre cómo manejaron los últimos capítulos de esta primera parte, específicamente el 22, 23 y 24, que son cuando aparece Saito y Kenshin se prepará para Kioto.. esos capítulos se sintieron, ¡uf!, sorprendentemente apurados, como que iban a toda velocidad, momentos CLAVE, como la pelea de Saito con Sanosuke e incluso la pelea final de Kenshin con Saito, no tuvieron ni la preparación ni la carga emocional que se merecían, loco.. Y después, la despedida de Kenshin se sintió a las apuradas, y hasta metieron los créditos finales encima de una parte importante Entonces, después de todo este sermón, ¿vale la pena ver el nuevo Rurouni Kenshin?

A pesar de mis quejas, sobre todo con la música y el ritmo medio raro de los últimos capítulos de esta primera tanda, mi respuesta es un SÍ GIGANTE, te da una adaptación limpia, directa y, lo más importante, COMPLETA del manga.. para cualquiera que no haya leído el original, o para los que somos como yo, esta es una oportunidad BUENÍSIMA.. es la oportunidad de vivir la historia de Kenshin sin el relleno y con la promesa de verla hasta el final como tiene que ser.. es un buen remake, y uno que creo que revive con éxito la franquicia para una nueva generación, y al mismo tiempo les da a los fans de toda la vida algo que venían esperando hace décadas.. le pondría un sólido 7.5/10. La fidelidad y la promesa de la historia completa te atrae, la animación cumple, y la historia principal es tan potente como siempre.. los puntos que le bajo son más que nada por la banda sonora que me dejó medio bajón y los problemas de ritmo en los últimos capítulos.. pero estoy ENGANCHADO.. y bueno, esto es todo por hoy nos veremos en las próximas reseñas, cuidense mucho!
