Hello everyone, anime fans, I hope you're doing great. This time, I want to talk a bit about an... interesting... anime. I want to share my personal opinions on: The Asterisk War. You know that feeling when you dive into an anime without knowing what it's about and end up with a very weird mix of "that was awesome!", "what the hell did I just watch?", and you had a blast? Well, that's exactly how I'm feeling. It's one of those series that you either love like crazy or find fault with at every turn, and I, somehow, am on both teams at the same time. First, let's talk about the world, because, let's be honest, the setting is a huge part of the appeal. Picture this: a long time ago, a global catastrophe called the Invertia nearly destroyed the planet, but it wasn't just destruction; it changed the rules of the game. Because of this event, a new kind of people, the Genestella, began to be born, and they come with factory-installed superpowers: speed, regeneration, elemental control... you name it, they have it.

To see what to do with all these superpowered people, they built a GIANT artificial island-city. This is Asterisk, the "Academy on the Water," which is basically a floating metropolis with six elite academies. Here, students don't just go to math class, no way! They learn to use their powers and then beat the crap out of each other in spectacular battles that everyone watches on TV, called Festas. Think of a mix between futuristic Olympics, The Hunger Games, and a high school battle royale. The concept, right off the bat, had me hooked. It has that sci-fi and danger vibe that I'm a sucker for. In the middle of all this chaos, our protagonist, Ayato Amagiri, shows up. He arrives as a transfer student to one of the six schools, Seidoukan Academy.

From minute one, you realize the guy isn't just there to make friends and get good grades. No, no, no. He has a hidden motive, something personal related to his missing sister. Ayato... let's see, how do I explain him? At first glance, he's the most cliché protagonist you could find: he's super kind, polite, and a bit dense when it comes to picking up on the hints from the girls who, obviously, are going to fall for him. But underneath that facade, the guy is broken... I mean, he's ridiculously powerful. One of my first thoughts was: "Ah, okay, so this dude is the Saitama of this universe."

Hola a todos, fanáticos del anime, espero que estén super bien, en esta ocasión, les quiero hablar un poco sobre un anime.. interesante.. les quiero compartir mis opiniones personales de: The Asterisk War.. ubican esa sensación cuando le entras a un anime sin saber qué onda y terminas con una mezcla rarísima de “¡qué chingón!”, “¿qué carajos acabo de ver?” y te la pasaste bomba? Pues justo así ando.. es de esas series que te gusta con locura o le sacas peros a cada rato, y yo, no sé cómo, estoy en los dos equipos al mismo tiempo. Primero, vamos a hablar del mundo, porque, siendo sinceros, el setting es gran parte del chiste, imagínense esto: hace un buen, una catástrofe mundial llamada la Invertia casi destruye el planeta, pero no solo fue destrucción, sino que cambió las reglas del juego. Por este evento, empezó a nacer gente nueva, los Jeunesse Tia, que vienen con superpoderes de fábrica: velocidad, regeneración, controlan elementos… lo que se te ocurra, lo tienen..

Para ver qué hacían con toda esta gente superpoderosa, construyeron una ciudad-isla artificial GIGANTE. Esta es Asterisk, la "Academia sobre el Agua", que es básicamente una metrópolis flotante con seis academias de élite, aquí los estudiantes no solo van a clases de mate, ¡qué va! Aprenden a usar sus poderes y luego se dan en la madre en unas batallas espectaculares que todo el mundo ve por la tele, llamadas Festas.. piensen en una mezcla de Olimpiadas futuristas con los Juegos del Hambre y un battle royale de preparatoria.. el concepto, así de entrada, ya me tenía atrapado, tiene esa vibra de ciencia ficción y peligro que a mí me puede.. en medio de todo este desmadre, aparece nuestro prota, Ayato Amagiri. Él llega como estudiante de intercambio a una de las seis escuelas, la Academia Seidoukan..

Desde el minuto uno, te das cuenta de que el tipo no está ahí nomás para hacer amigos y sacar buenas notas.. no, no, no. Él tiene un motivo oculto, algo personal que tiene que ver con su hermana desaparecida, Ayato… a ver, ¿cómo se los explico? A primera vista, es el prota más cliché que te puedas encontrar: es súper amable, educado y un poquito denso para cachar las indirectas de las chicas que, obviamente, se van a enamorar de él.. pero debajo de toda esa fachada, el tipo está rotísimo.. o sea, es ridículamente poderoso.. uno de mis primeros pensamientos fue: “Ah, ok, o sea que este güey es el Saitama de este universo”.

But here comes the plot twist, the masterstroke that prevents the guy from simply steamrolling everyone: his sister placed a limiter on him. He can only use his full destructive power for about five minutes. After that, he's completely wiped out, everything hurts, and he's basically a sitting duck. This little detail, ladies and gentlemen, adds a brutal amount of tension to every fight. The question is no longer if he can win, but if he can win fast enough. It forces him to use his head, to be a strategist and not just throw punches wildly, which is an incredible way to handle an overpowered protagonist. Let's be honest, the reason you keep watching The Asterisk War is the fights. Man, the combat! This is, without a doubt, the anime's strongest point and what completely saves it. Every time a confrontation begins, the series comes alive. The choreographies are super polished, the hits feel real, they hurt, and the sword fights are freaking awesome.

It's crystal clear that the animation studio poured almost all their budget and love into these sequences, and it shows. The energy is insane; you have thousand-mile-an-hour duels with glowing energy weapons, the Luxes, explosions everywhere, and well-thought-out tactics. I was never bored. Even when other parts of the series made me roll my eyes, the promise of the next fight kept me glued to the screen. It's one of the best things the series has, hands down. Now, let's talk about the other thing that left me speechless: the music. It's insane. I don't mean it has a couple of decent background tracks. No, I mean the openings and endings are phenomenal. Especially the outro. It's so emotionally charged and so perfectly placed. The way the series lets the last few seconds of the episode blend into the closing song is, simply, perfect. The music is so, so good, and the music in the fights is amazing, elevating those already incredible scenes to another level.

Pero aquí viene el giro de tuerca, la jugada maestra que evita que el tipo simplemente arrase con todo el mundo: su hermana le puso un limitador.. solo puede usar todo su poder destructivo por unos cinco minutos, después de eso, queda hecho polvo, le duele hasta el alma y, básicamente, es un blanco fácil. Este detallito, señores, le mete una tensión brutal a cada pelea, la pregunta ya no es si puede ganar, sino si puede ganar lo suficientemente rápido.. lo obliga a usar la cabeza, a ser estratega y no solo a tirar madrazos a lo loco, que es una forma increíble de manejar a un prota que está rotísimo.. seamos honestos, la razón por la que te quedas viendo The Asterisk War son las peleas. ¡Uff, el combate! Este es, sin duda alguna, el punto más fuerte del anime y lo que lo salva por completo, cada vez que empieza un enfrentamiento, la serie revive.. las coreografías están pulidísimas, los golpes se sienten, duelen, y las peleas con espadas son una maldita pasada.

Está clarísimo que el estudio de animación le metió casi toda la lana y el cariño a estas secuencias, y se nota.. la energía es una locura, tienes duelos a mil por hora con armas de energía brillante, las Luxes, explosiones por todos lados y tácticas bien pensadas. Jamás me aburrí.. incluso cuando otras partes de la serie me hacían poner los ojos en blanco, la promesa de la siguiente pelea me mantenía pegado a la pantalla, es de lo mejorcito que tiene la serie, sin pedos. Ahora, hablemos de la otra cosa que me dejó con la boca abierta: la música.. es una cosa de locos.. no me refiero a que tenga un par de rolitas decentes de fondo. No, me refiero a que los openings y los endings son una bestialidad.. especialmente el outro.. está tan cargado de emoción y tan perfectamente metido. La forma en que la serie deja que los últimos segundos del capítulo se mezclen con la canción de cierre es, simplemente, perfecta, la música es tan, pero tan buena, y la música en las peleas es buenísima, y eleva esas escenas que ya de por sí son increíbles a otro nivel.

Okay, okay, look, I've been singing its praises a lot. Sounds like the perfect series, right? Well... this is where things get messy, folks. Despite its brutal strengths, The Asterisk War has some really ugly lows, and the biggest one is that it has an identity crisis worse than mine in middle school. Seriously, the show has no idea what the hell it is. One moment, it's an action series with death tournaments and hidden conspiracies, and the next... BAM! A by-the-book harem comedy, with every cliché you can imagine. Then it flirts with serious drama, only to go back to mundane slice-of-life scenes. This jumping back and forth makes the plot feel super unstable, like the script is completely drunk, especially after the first few episodes.

The start is strong, but then it stumbles trying to juggle everything at once. And that's when it hit me, and it reminded me a lot of Sword Art Online: it has an incredible central concept and brilliant moments, but it gets bogged down by trying to be too many things for everyone. You'll watch an entire episode of pure awesome action, and the next... just harem chaos and fan service. It doesn't know when to hit the brakes and focus, damn it! That brings us to the other big problem: outside of the fights and the music, a lot of things feel... well, generic, cookie-cutter.

The harem, man, the harem especially clings to every archetype we already know by heart. You have the badass tsundere princess, the childhood friend who's kind of a loli, the student council president who's all flirty and mysterious... and so on. You've seen these characters a thousand times in other animes. Look, don't get me wrong, they have their charm, I'm not the biggest fan... but their stories and how they interact feel textbook, super predictable. There's nothing that makes them unique, and their personalities are as standard as they come.

Ok, ok, a ver, he estado echándole un montón de flores.. suena a que es la serie perfecta, ¿no? Pues… aquí es donde la puerca tuerce el rabo, gente, a pesar de sus aciertos brutales, The Asterisk War tiene unos bajones bien feos, y el más grande es que tiene una crisis de identidad más grave que la mía en la secundaria.. es que, de verdad, la serie no sabe ni qué pedo consigo misma. En un momento, es una serie de acción con torneos a muerte y conspiraciones ocultas, al siguiente… ¡PUM! Comedia harem de manual, con todos los clichés que te puedas imaginar.. luego le coquetea al drama serio, para después volver a las escenitas de la vida cotidiana sin más, este brinco de un lado para otro hace que la trama se sienta súper inestable, como que el guion anda todo borracho, sobre todo después de los primeros capítulos.

El arranque es potente, pero luego se tambalea queriendo hacer malabares con todo al mismo tiempo.. y fue ahí donde me cayó el veinte y me acordó un montón a Sword Art Online: tiene un concepto central increíble y momentos brillantes, pero se queda estancada por querer ser demasiadas cosas para todo el mundo. Te avientas un capítulo entero de pura acción chingonsísima, y al siguiente… puro desmadre de harem y fan service, no sabe cuándo pisar el freno y enfocarse, ¡carajo! Eso nos lleva al otro gran problema: fuera de las peleas y la música, muchas cosas se sienten… pues, genéricas, hechas con molde..

El harem, uff, el harem en especial se cuelga de todos los arquetipos que ya nos sabemos de memoria.. tienes a la princesa tsundere de armas tomar, a la amiga de la infancia que es medio loli, a la presidenta del consejo estudiantil que es toda coqueta y misteriosa… y así nos vamos. Ya has visto a estos personajes mil veces en otros animes.. ojo, no me malentiendan, tienen su encanto, no soy el más fan.. pero sus historias y cómo se relacionan se sienten de manual, súper predecibles, no tienen nada que las haga únicas y sus personalidades son de lo más estándar que hay.

And my other complaint, and this one is important, is how they throw information at you. Look, the world's lore is deep and interesting, but a lot of the time it feels like they're force-feeding it to you with a fire hose. The world-building is super dense, and the dialogues are sometimes so packed with exposition that it's a pain in the ass to follow, especially if you're reading subtitles while trying to see what the hell is happening on screen. It feels... crammed, like it was poorly condensed. I often had that annoying feeling of "wait, wait, I think I missed something important," not because they didn't say it, but because they buried it under three other explanations in less than ten seconds.

The power system, for example, is probably super well-defined in the series, but if I'm being honest, I still don't fully get it. I had to resign myself and say "okay, everyone has cool powers, and that's that," and move on. So, what's the conclusion to all this? Look, despite my complaints, I did enjoy the series. It's the classic case of the good being so good that it makes you put up with the bad. The action is exciting, the music is a gem, and Ayato's limiter adds incredible tension. It's a "popcorn" anime, one of those that "aren't bad" and entertain you for a single viewing. It's not going to be the next Attack on Titan, not by a long shot, but that's not what it's trying to be either. It's a series you watch, enjoy for the spectacle, and then move on to the next thing.

Oh, and the first season ends on one of those cliffhangers that leaves you with a stupid look on your face, which is frustrating but effective. If I had to give it a rating, I'd give it a 6.5/10. It's a series that runs out of steam because it doesn't know what it wants to be and relies too heavily on clichés, but it's saved from being a total disaster thanks to its spectacular fights and phenomenal music. If you guys like action animes with harem elements and can tolerate some clichés, I'd say give it a shot. It's one of those things you either love or hate; you either find its charm and have a blast, or you drop it after three episodes. For me, it was something that barely passed the test... an anime that's entertaining at times, but with flaws too obvious to ignore. And well, that's it for today's review! Take care! Byebye!

Y mi otra queja, y esta es importante, es cómo te avientan la información.. a ver, la historia del mundo es profunda y está interesante, pero muchas veces parece que te la están metiendo con una manguera a presión.. el world-building es súper denso, y los diálogos a veces están tan llenos de explicaciones que cuesta un huevo seguir el hilo, sobre todo si andas leyendo subtítulos mientras intentas ver qué chingados pasa en pantalla. Se siente… todo apretado, como que lo condensaron a la mala, me pasaba que sentía esa molestia de “a ver, a ver, creo que me perdí algo importante”, no porque no lo dijeran, sino porque te lo enterraban debajo de otras tres explicaciones en menos de diez segundos.

El sistema de poderes, por ejemplo, seguro que está súper bien definido en la serie, pero si les soy sincero, todavía no le agarro la onda del todo.. tuve que resignarme y decir “ok, todos tienen poderes chidos y ya”, y seguirle.. entonces, ¿a qué llegamos con todo esto? Miren, a pesar de mis quejas, sí disfruté la serie.. es el clásico caso de que lo bueno es tan bueno, que hace que aguantes lo malo… la acción es emocionante, la música es una joya y el limitador de Ayato le mete una tensión increíble. Es un anime “palomero”, uno de esos que “no están mal” y que te entretienen para verlos una vez.. no va a ser el próximo Attack on Titan, ni de chiste, pero tampoco es lo que busca, es una serie que ves, la disfrutas por el espectáculo y luego a lo que sigue..

Ah, y la primera temporada termina en un cliffhanger de esos que te dejan con cara de imbécil, lo cual es frustrante pero efectivo, si tuviera que ponerle una calificación, le daría un 6.5/10. Es una serie que se queda a medio gas por no saber qué quiere ser y por depender demasiado de los clichés, pero que se salva de ser un desastre total gracias a sus peleas espectaculares y su música fenomenal.. si a ustedes les laten los animes de acción con harem y pueden aguantar algunos clichés, yo diría que le den una oportunidad, es de esas cosas que o amas o odias; o le encuentras el encanto y te la pasas bomba, o la botas después de tres capítulos.. para mí, fue algo que pasó el examen arrastrandose.. un anime entretenido a ratos, pero con fallas demasiado obvias como para hacerse el ciego.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy!
