Hello anime lovers. Today I want to talk to you about a Japanese anime series that has gone very unnoticed last year and that, personally, was undeservedly underestimated by many who got carried away by appearances. While it falls into the "Isekai" genre, this story has more drama and development than many other anime of its kind. Based on the light novel series written by Takuma Sakai, this anime adaptation was produced by Project No. 9 studio and aired late last 2023. This little hidden gem of anime is a work that I do not recommend to everyone because of how strong it can be. However, this does not detract from the fact that it is a very good anime.

Plot

The anime begins with our protagonist being knocked unconscious after eating raw pig's liver, only to wake up somewhat confused and with a strange feeling and vision. Suddenly, he realizes that he is in a stable with a group of pigs for company. Seeing that he cannot walk or talk, he realizes that he has become a pig when a girl arrives to talk to him and treat him like one, but, she realizes that he is not a normal pig.

The girl's name is Jess and she is very loving and kind to our protagonist, who has a pig-like appearance and cannot speak, but she helps him and understands him because she can read and know what he is thinking. This exposes our pig friend who is quite the Otaku with somewhat morbid thoughts. However, despite this, she is still kind to him and helps him by finding a way for him to become a human again. But in return, she asks him to accompany her on a not very pleasant and somewhat dangerous journey.

But, beyond that, this particular anime has a huge variety of details that sets it apart from most anime of this famous japanese genre or demographic. While we are talking about a reincarnation in a fantasy world and all, the story is much more complicated and tense than it appears to be. It's literally one of those anime that you shouldn't judge by its cover, as it has a plot and development that you would never expect from a series of this style.

Let's start with the protagonist, who is obviously not the typical chosen one who has been reincarnated in a fantastic world with a power that makes him invincible and that will serve him to fulfill his mission to defeat the Demon King and become the hero (typical generic plot of all Isekai). However, in this anime we don't see any of this, we only see a boy who died tragically and was reincarnated as a pig in a fantasy world, very different from the one we know. Without any special powers beyond his incredible pig sense of smell, he has to accompany Jess, a girl who is part of the Yesma people and who always carries a curious necklace.

Si bien estamos hablando de una reencarnación en un mundo fantástico y todo, la historia es mucho más complicada y tensa de lo que aparenta ser. Literalmente es de esos animes que no deberías de juzgar por su portada, ya que tienen una trama y un desarrollo que nunca te ibas a esperar de una serie de este estilo.

Empecemos por el protagonista, el cual evidentemente no es el típico elegido que ha reencarnado en un mundo fantástico con un poder que lo hace invencible y que le servirá para cumplir con su misión de vencer al Rey Demonio y convertirse en el héroe (típica trama genérica de todo Isekai). Sin embargo, en este anime no vemos nada de esto, solo vemos a un chico que murió trágicamente y fue reencarnado como un cerdo en un mundo de fantasía, muy distinto al que conocemos. Sin ningún poder especial, más allá que su increíble olfato de cerdo, este tiene que acompañar a Jess, una chica que forma parte del pueblo Yesma y que lleva consigo siempre un curioso collar.

At first, the chemistry generated by this curious couple is both entertaining and funny and at the same time a little morbid. But, as the chapters go by, the story starts to become much darker. The issue of the Yesmas, girls who from a very young age work as servants and do not have the same benefits as the rest of the humans and who at the age of 16 are sent to the top of a mountain is a serious case. What's up there? No one knows. But what is known is the amount of atrocities some people do with the Yesmas they meet along the way, which are very valuable, for some unknown reason. This is the crude and gloomy world our pig and protagonist has to face, with a dangerous path he has to travel with his short legs.

Beyond dealing with somewhat strong themes and developing an atmosphere that can go from fun and lighthearted to somewhat dramatic and sometimes disturbing; this anime makes you think quite a bit due to the mysteries that are generated along the way. The perfect combination of these genres with a colorful and bright animation style gives that bittersweet touch to this anime from which you don't expect what's to come. While the animation is not one of the best out there, it does a good job of giving us a pleasant quality. This, added to the soundtrack that this anime has, gives this hidden gem a comical, yet mysterious and dramatic touch. While it is not an anime that everyone would watch, for obvious reasons, I admit that it is one of those works that surprised and shocked me by how unpredictable they can be.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 for the Isekai, Fantasy and Drama genre.

Al principio, la química que genera esta curiosa pareja es tanto entretenida y graciosa como a la vez un poco morbosa. Pero, a medida que van pasando los capítulos, la historia empieza a tornarse mucho más oscura. El tema de las Yesmas, chicas que desde muy pequeñas trabajan como sirvientas y que no tienen los mismos beneficios que el resto de los humanos y que a la edad de 16 años son enviadas a la cima de una montaña es un caso serio. ¿Qué hay allá arriba? Nadie lo sabe. Pero lo que sí se sabe es la cantidad de atrocidades que hacen algunos con las Yesmas que se encuentran en el camino, las cuales son muy valiosas, por alguna razón desconocida. Este es el mundo crudo y tétrico al cual nuestro cerdo y protagonista tiene que enfrentarse, con un peligroso camino que tiene que recorrer con sus cortas patas.

Más allá de tratar temas un tanto fuertes y de desarrollar un ambiente que puede pasar de ser divertido y alegre a ser un tanto dramático y a veces perturbador; este anime te pone a pensar bastante debido a los misterios que se van generando durante el camino. La combinación perfecta de estos géneros con un estilo de animación colorido y brillante le da ese toque agridulce a este anime del cual no te esperas lo que se viene. Si bien dicha animación no es de las mejores que existen, cumple muy bien con darnos una calidad agradable. Esto, sumado a la banda sonora que tiene este anime que le da ese toque cómico y a la vez misterioso y dramático a esta joya escondida. Si bien no es un anime que todo el mundo vería, por obvias razones, admito que es de esas obras que me sorprendieron e impactaron por lo impredecibles que pueden llegar a ser.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género Isekai, Fantasía y Drama.
