Buenos días, buenas tardes o buenas noches, damas y caballeros. ¿Cómo están? ¿Cómo se encuentran el día de hoy? Espero que muy bien. Yo, particularmente, en mi anterior publicación les dije que les traería un anime serio, pero parece ser que terminé viendo otro anime de comedia, aunque la verdad no me quejo, tiene un concepto más que interesante. Aunque he de admitir que lo que hizo que lo viera es que el creador es el mismo de Call of the Night, siendo tanto así que el parecido del dúo protagonista de ese anime es muy parecido a este. ¿Lo habrá hecho a propósito? ¿O su estilo de dibujo es tan marcado que no le permite dibujar de otra forma? Aunque, siendo sincero, no me quejo porque me encanta la forma en que dibuja, es muy característico. Es de esas personas que tienen un estilo de dibujo que podrás reconocer a simple vista.
El giro que tiene el anime del que les voy a hablar a continuación es que, con él, podrás aprender acerca de la infinidad de dulces que tiene Japón (pero creo que los nombres quizás se te olvidarán rápido), todo esto mediante situaciones cómicas ocasionadas por los protagonistas. Algunos, en su tiempo (2016), lo consideraron como una especie de publicidad a esos dulces, pero sinceramente yo siento una especie de conexión con la obra porque tiene un aire nostálgico y, a pesar de que no tengas conocimiento acerca de los dulces presentados, te va a gustar de alguna forma u otra aprender acerca de ellos.
Así que, sin más dilación, hablemos acerca de Dagashi Kashi.

Now, in my previous post, I mentioned that I’d bring you a serious anime—but it seems I ended up watching another comedy anime instead. Not that I’m complaining, mind you; it’s got a rather interesting concept. Though I must admit, what really drew me in was the fact that the creator is the same as Call of the Night’s. The resemblance between the main duo in that anime and this one is uncanny—did they do it on purpose? Or is their art style so distinctive that they can’t draw any other way? Honestly, though, I’m not complaining—I adore their way of drawing. It’s so unique, the kind of style you’d recognise at a glance.
The twist with the anime I’m about to discuss is that, through it, you’ll learn about the endless variety of sweets Japan has to offer (though you’ll probably forget the names pretty quickly). All of this unfolds through the protagonists’ comedic antics. Back in 2016, some even saw it as a sort of advertisement for those sweets—but personally, I feel a strange connection to the series. It’s got this nostalgic charm, and even if you know nothing about the sweets featured, you’ll still find yourself oddly drawn in, one way or another.
So without further ado, let’s talk about Dagashi Kashi.

El anime nos pone en la piel de un chico llamado Kokonotsu (Coconuts para los amigos), quien es un aficionado al manga, le encanta dibujar y su sueño a futuro es poder ser un mangaka, aunque no lo tendrá fácil porque su padre, llamado Yō, quiere que sea el heredero del negocio familiar: la dulcería Shikada. Un día, todo cambiará cuando la excéntrica hija de la famosa empresa de dulces Shidare se presente ante ellos en la dulcería, con el fin de que el papá de Kokonotsu trabaje para su compañía. Yō aceptará, pero con la única condición de que Hotaru consiga convencer a Kokonotsu de heredar el negocio de los dulces. Así dará comienzo a nuestra divertida aventura, donde Hotaru, al ser una obsesionada de los dulces, le contará la historia de los mismos a Kokonotsu, haciendo que muchas veces eso termine en una situación cómica.
La trama muchas veces se sentirá que no avanza mucho, pero de cierta forma se siente agradable ver cómo es la convivencia de los personajes en su vida diaria, siendo que en total solo contamos con 5 personajes con excelente química entre ellos. Los dos restantes serán los hermanos Tō y Saya, dueños de una cafetería a las afueras del pueblo. Tō es el mejor amigo del protagonista, y Saya servirá como uno de los intereses amorosos del protagonista, ya que está enamorada de él; además, ella es muy buena en cualquier juego. La verdad, admito que es mi personaje favorito: es muy bonita. Por ende, tendremos una historia enfocada a la comedia y muchos datos acerca de dulces japoneses.
The anime puts us in the shoes of a boy named Kokonotsu (or "Coconuts" to his friends), a manga enthusiast who loves drawing and dreams of becoming a mangaka one day. However, his path won’t be easy, as his father, Yō, wants him to inherit the family business – the Shikada sweet shop. Everything changes one day when the eccentric daughter of the famous Shidare confectionery company turns up at their shop, aiming to recruit Kokonotsu’s father to work for her company. Yō agrees, but on one condition: Hotaru must convince Kokonotsu to take over the sweet shop.
Thus begins our amusing adventure, where Hotaru – a self-confessed sweets obsessive – educates Kokonotsu about the history of various treats, often leading to comedic situations. While the plot may sometimes feel like it’s not progressing much, there’s a certain charm in watching the characters’ daily interactions. The story revolves around just five core characters who share brilliant chemistry. The remaining two are siblings Tō and Saya, who run a café on the outskirts of town. Tō is the protagonist’s best mate, while Saya serves as one of his love interests – she’s smitten with him and happens to be ridiculously good at every game. I’ll admit, she’s my favourite character; she’s lovely.
Ultimately, what we get is a comedy-driven story packed with trivia about Japanese sweets.

Dagashi Kashi es perfecto para aquellos que quieren conocer un poco más acerca del país nipón. Creo que sería muy entretenido verlo para conocer la gran variedad de dulces y luego emocionarte al verlos en persona, en dado caso de ir a Japón. Además, tendrías el privilegio de saber qué estás comiendo y la historia detrás de cada dulce. De cierta forma, podría decir que este anime es bastante informativo a su manera. Habrá gustado mucho en el país asiático porque, tengo entendido, incluso tuvo una segunda temporada. Además, la comedia es bastante sencilla y funcional; creo que solo hubo una ocasión donde el chiste con el dulce del día perdió la gracia, simplemente era de esos chistes que no se podían traducir y hacían más sentido en japonés.
El sistema de los capítulos está estructurado principalmente en tres dulces por capítulo, cada uno provocando diversas situaciones. Lo único que varía es la participación de los personajes. Un poco también se puede perder el sentido original de la obra, que es convencer a Kokonotsu, aunque siento más bien que avanza poco a poco, porque en los últimos capítulos se sintió que hubo un progreso acerca del tema. Quizás dentro de la segunda temporada se explore más acerca de ese tema y el posible triángulo amoroso entre Kokonotsu, Hotaru y Saya.
También quiero destacar bastante el diseño de personajes: es demasiado bueno. Los personajes son altamente identificables y tienen características únicas. Aunque solo hay cinco, es posible que te encante sí o sí el diseño de alguno.
Dagashi Kashi is perfect for those wanting to learn more about Japanese culture. I reckon it’d be brilliant fun to watch – you’d get to discover heaps of sweets and then properly nerd out when spotting them in person if you ever visit Japan. Plus, you’d have the satisfaction of knowing exactly what you’re eating and the history behind each treat. In its own way, the anime’s quite educational. It must’ve been popular in Asia, given that it even got a second series. The comedy’s straightforward but effective – though there was just one gag about the "sweet of the day" that fell flat, really. One of those jokes that doesn’t translate well and only works in Japanese.
Episodes are neatly structured around three sweets each, with each treat sparking different scenarios. The only variation is which characters get involved. The main premise – convincing Kokonotsu to take over the shop – does occasionally get sidelined, though I’d say there’s slow progress. The later episodes finally moved things along a bit, and I’d wager the second series properly explores this thread, along with the potential love triangle between Kokonotsu, Hotaru, and Saya.
Special shout-out to the character designs – they’re absolutely top-notch. Each character’s instantly recognisable with properly unique traits. There’s only five of them, but you’re bound to fancy at least one design.

En conclusión, creo que estamos ante un anime perfecto para pasar el rato, de aquellos que te transmiten aquella vibra nostálgica de los 2010. Sinceramente, me sentí viendo un anime de aquellos que no se hacen mucho hoy en día, siendo que en estos últimos años reina más la acción que las historias de la vida diaria relajada que se centra más en despejar la mente.
En comparación con el anime pasado, quiero decirles que hay un poco de fanservice respecto a la protagonista, pero, cómo decirlo, es bastante discreto y no creo que incomode a nadie. Se siente más infantil que otra cosa, así que lo consideraría apto para todo el público.
Aunque para serles sinceros, siento que no muchos quizás quieran adentrarse a ver este anime, debido a que trata un tema tan específico, haciendo que muchas personas quieran pasarlo de largo respecto a su temática. Pero sinceramente creo que puedes quedarte viéndolo debido a la personalidad variada de sus personajes. Es muy fácil encariñarte con ellos debido a su excelente química; funcionan todos muy bien juntos y ninguno es alguien al que puedas odiar.
Dentro de mi sistema subjetivo de puntaje, sería un sólido 7/10. Es entretenido a la par de educativo, una combinación muy interesante que puede llamar la atención a los aficionados de la cultura japonesa o, en específico, de cualquier tipo de dulces.
In conclusion, I believe we're looking at a perfect anime for casual viewing - one of those that gives off that nostalgic early 2010s vibe. Honestly, it felt like watching the sort of anime they don't make much these days, especially when recent years have been dominated by action rather than these relaxed slice-of-life stories that help clear your mind.
Compared to the previous anime I mentioned, there is a bit of fanservice involving the female lead - but how shall I put it? It's rather tasteful and I don't think it would make anyone uncomfortable. It feels more childish than anything else, so I'd consider it suitable for all audiences.
To be perfectly honest though, I suspect this anime might not appeal to everyone simply because it deals with such a niche subject. Many viewers might scroll past it due to its specific theme. But truthfully, I think it's worth sticking with thanks to its wonderfully varied cast. It's remarkably easy to grow fond of these characters because of their excellent chemistry - they all work so well together and there's not a single one you could possibly dislike.
In my completely subjective rating system, I'd give it a solid 7/10. It's equally entertaining and educational - a rather interesting combination that should appeal to fans of Japanese culture or, more specifically, anyone with a sweet tooth.
Ahhh, Dagashi Kashi! Yeah, I watched it a while ago and it was the same for me, I started out of pure curiosity... I admit, it's a quirky anime. It's a peculiar anime, I admit, who would have thought that a series about Japanese candies and snacks would be so entertaining? It's true that sometimes it seems like nothing happens with the main plot of the store, but it's just that the characters and their craziness make up for everything. And yes, Saya is a sweetheart, she's one of my favorites too! She's so genuine and funny. It's true that it's niche and not for everyone, but for the characters and how different it is, it's worth giving it a chance!
