Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Koujou
, the anime that premiered on January 15 this year on Netflix, from
MAPPA Studios
, follows
Masamune Kikuiri
, a thirteen-year-old high school student who resides in a town frozen in time after an explosion at a steel factory. The town's exits are sealed and the inhabitants live a monotonous existence, hoping for a return to normalcy, but everything changes when Masamune's enigmatic classmate
Atsumi Sagami
takes him to the factory's fifth furnace, where they meet a wild and mysterious girl unable to speak. This encounter upsets the balance of the world in which the young people find themselves by releasing an uncontrollable impulse of boy-girl love, disgusted with their monotonous life. As the bonds blossom, the story becomes an exploration of the resilience of love in a bleak environment, will this love be enough to restore normalcy or will it trigger a series of irreversible events?

That's why today I bring you a review of this movie. Before I start, I'll tell you that I just finished watching the film and I have all the ideas quite fresh, so I prefer to make a much more organic post, as I think it is the best way to express what this film tells us. So going straight to the topic, the film, directed byMari Okada was released as I said on Netflix after only four months of being released in Japan and the reason for this is because in Japan this film was a failure.

Let's remember that anime movies in Japan usually take between six or seven months to reach

Netflix
and this is because they spend a lot of time when they are a hit in theaters. Take the case of
Miyazaki's
last film,
The Boy and the Heron
,which was released in July in Japan and is still in theaters. On the other hand this film, not having done well in Japanese theaters, they decided to quickly bet on
Netflix
,and that is why only four months after its release in Japan, we already have it available to watch worldwide but why this film did not do well that is something we will talk more about in a while but now I will give you my opinion of what I thought, this is an amazing movie, something that we will also go more in depth in a while.

If we see on the one hand the narrative, that from the beginning it is not very clear what is happening until the minutes go by as the film begins introducing us to four children who are studying and see an explosion in the distance and realize it was in the steel factory, there they say that something happened, and then everything returns to be like a normal day, and there they do not explain that this is no longer a normal day, that since the explosion everything changed in their town, or not, because what made that explosion is to lock all citizens in that town and also make the time does not pass, it will always be in winter and people who want to get out of there or have other dreams, be eaten by a dragon or a wolf.a

Before telling the plot of the film as it is, let's make a small parenthesis. I began to see this film with very low expectations, more than anything, the fact that I had already seen reviews of Japanese, and most agreed that it was a bad movie, that they had not understood it, that in the end had left many things and had not been locked then when I began to see the film I can say that the first twenty to thirty minutes I did not understand anything and I did understand the reviews of the Japanese, but when I started to get more into the movie, little by little these low expectations turned into entertainment, that is to say, knowing that the movie was going to be bad, that it was only going to be a little bit tangled, the reality was quite different.

I didn't think it was too bad either. As the film went on, I understood everything, since at the beginning the film just gives you a preview of everything that is happening but does not explain anything at all, those explanations are given throughout the two hours of the film, so it's like you're putting pieces together to finally understand the whole story. The explosion happens and that does not explain everything that is happening in the town, the protagonist of the story begins to relate to a girl, which he did not like, but the more he gets to know her, A falls in love. On that day, this girl takes him to the steel factory, where the disaster occurred and there he sees that he has a girl in captivity. There she explains to him that the girl is the cause of the disasters and that she has to take care of her.

This is happening, more disasters keep happening because people want to change, they want to have a future, and in turn the relationship of these protagonists is improving. The scene that completely changed my perspective of the film is when the protagonist sees himself in reality and realizes that the girl he was taking care of was his daughter in reality. Here, yes, I was honestly completely surprised. The followers of the channel will know that I am a big fan of these stories, they have to do with other realities, time travel and so on, and I really did not expect that in this movie they took that theme, I thought it was just going to be a natural disaster, or not, Here they took into account another reality, and seeing that the protagonist could see himself, and that his wife was the girl he had fallen in love with, and the girl they had in captivity, in reality was his daughter, it was like ok now the plot got interesting, and then the protagonists have to help this girl to return to reality because that is where she belongs, because her parents, the protagonists of the story, are also waiting for her.

《》━《》━《》━《》《》━《》━《》━《》《》━《》━《》━《》《》━《》━《》━《》《》━《》

This is how, with a lot of problems, they manage to get her on the train that goes to that reality and thus she is reunited with her parents and the cracks that had been created in her world are closed. Unfortunately something that we wanted to be and didn't happen was the reunion of this girl with her parents, that didn't happen, but we do have almost at the end the scene of her going back to the steel factory and seeing the drawings that her father made. As I say, for me it was a movie that I liked, I think they killed a lot of criticism, but I understand that it leaves many things unanswered. In the end I also feel that the death of some characters that I thought were going to return later when everything was solved, but they never returned, so it seems that at the time their deaths do not affect so much and to finish the post, we can not leave without talking a little about the technical aspect and how this film was carried out.

First of all, it should be said that this movie has been in production for a long time. The first trailer came out in 2021 and one of the things that drew attention to this film was because its director, Mari Okada, is the director who has made impressive projects. I think there is nothing to criticize, what I highlight most of the film is the work of photography of the scenarios, in that yes, it has no competition, it's crazy how they worked with this, The amount of details it has, the steel factory or the simple landscapes are drawn incredibly, it must be said that it is an incredible film, which perhaps where it fails a little, is in the narrative, although I found a film that I enjoyed and I highly recommend it. And for now, that's all as for the review, Thank you very much for reading my post and thanking you from now on for your comments, greetings and goodbye.

I agree, I understand why the critics could say that they did not understand anything about the movies, these peculiar stories are always confusing to understand perfectly and when the narrative plays with the same intrigue of what is happening to let you discover the story by yourself it becomes more confusing, the truth seemed to me something curious and I think I will look for it to see it at some point, at the moment I liked the animation.

I've always found it curious how some stories and anime can be very popular in Japan and outside not be so loved or vice versa haha, in the end for the industry the most important thing is the sales in Japan as a measure of quality.

I think the reason why it has been more successful on NETFLIX than in its country of origin, Japan, is due to the great intercultural difference that separates us, the Japanese are very different from the Westerners in terms of their customs and other everyday things of life.Thank you for your comment.

Interesting plot here, it looks like the kind of story that calls my attention from the beginning.
I'll check it out soon.

It would be a very good idea for you to see it, I recommend it and you will realize that from the beginning it will captivate you.

Maybe the criticisms come from that side, they didn't understand the plot or they don't like complicated plots.

I haven't watched this movie, but I'm glad that you didn't let the negative reviews guide you too much and you were encouraged to watch it and find out that you liked it.

The animation looks good and even though I already got the spoiler haha it doesn't matter, I knew I would get it and the plot reads interesting 👌

The same is my friend, although it is a slightly complicated story, it is still a beautiful story that at the end of everything is always about love. Thank you for your comment.
