Sylthivy: Beyond Human

Sylthivy comes from a planet ruled by a fierce and overwhelmingly violent flora, where the struggle for survival drives all creatures.

It is believed to have emerged from the fusion of a morphic reptile—capable of mutating its DNA—and a carnivorous plant. The reptile, upon falling into the jaws of the plant, attempted to absorb as much DNA as possible to survive and ended up fused.

Creating Sylthivy

To create my character, I drew inspiration from various plants, such as the rose, with its sensual flowers; ivy, with its leaves and color; and guao, a plant that causes skin irritation in my country.

Para crear a mi personaje me inspiré en varias plantas, como la rosa, en sus sensuales flores; la hiedra, en sus hojas y color; y el guao, una planta que produce urticaria en mi país.

Additionally, I took influence from well-known pop culture characters, such as Roselia from Pokémon and Ivy Poison, especially the version from mid-2000s comics.

I started by sketching the base and created a solid, well-structured draft that captured both sensuality and ferocity, as well as the grace and stylization of a reptilian body, incorporating typical alien elements such as its eyes. I opted for long, sharp claws.

Comencé dibujando la base y creé un boceto sólido y bien estructurado que representara tanto sensualidad como ferocidad, y sobre todo la gracia y estilización de un cuerpo de un reptil, con elementos típicos de los alienígenas como sus ojos. Decidí por garras largas y afiladas.

With the sketch complete, it was time for the lineart. I decided to make a good lineart because I always do, hahaha, but also because I wanted something comic-style and retro-futuristic. I played around with line values and thickness to enhance the character's volume.

Con todo el boceto listo, venía el lineart. Decidí hacer lineart bueno porque siempre lo hago jajaja, pero también porque quería algo cómic y retro futurista. Jugué con los valores de línea un poco y con los grosores para ayudar al volumen del personaje.

For the color palette, I chose to play with pastel tones between reds and greens, with yellows for the areas illuminated by the spores. I really liked the palette I selected, and from now on, I'm trying to stay faithful to the palettes I choose.

Para la paleta de colores me decanté por jugar con tonos pasteles entre rojos y verdes, con amarillos para las zonas iluminadas por las esporas. Me gustó mucho la paleta que escogí, y estoy tratando desde ahora mantenerme fiel a las paletas que selecciono.

I kept the background simple: a flat color with texture to make the character stand out. I had a lot of fun creating it, but as I always say: "An animation is worth a thousand words."

El fondo lo mantuve simple: un color plano con textura para que destacara el personaje. Me divertí mucho haciéndolo, pero como siempre digo: "una animación vale más que mil palabras".
