Things being what they are, when did white skin turn into a positive property for all?

Happy Hump Day, amazing people!

I was talking to two of my virtual friends the past few days and we discussed the delightful places and spots we want to visit and what we will do when we arrive (daydreaming).

Sp in the middle of our conversation, we discussed why "some" Filipinos lean toward having whiter skin. Indeed, truth be told, different nationals love the opposite. Then, at that point, I remember my husband (who is Caucasian) posted a similar topic on Facebook a few years earlier. And he goes:

"I don't get it and maybe I never will. I'm gonna speak in generalities, so if you are not part of what I am talking about, please don't get upset! What I don't get is why do Filipinas (in general) try to become lighter in color? When most Westerners (in general) think that he darker you are, the healthier you are? And in connection to that, the more attractive you are!"
(my husband)

I was scrolling at the comment section and some just cracked me up.

Friend 1: (American)

"In the Philippines, they tell darker women they will be prettier if they use skin whitener and in America, they tell lighter women they will be prettier if they use tanning products. It is all about preying on a woman's insecurity about her looks to make money."

Friend 2: (Filipina in the Philippines)

"Most Filipinas like to be white coz the whiter the girl here, they get more attention when they are walking down the street. I actually like my color which is brown. Most of them spend thousands for gluta injection just to look whiter."

Friend 3: (British)

It is a topic that often dismays me. Many times a girl (doesn't seem to be an issue with men) has referred to herself as ugly. Yes, they actually use the word ugly. In most cases, they clearly are not ugly so naturally, I inquire "why say that about yourself" The reply is always "because I'm too dark".

I have no idea where this comes from but the media encourage it and have a preference towards lighter-skinned girls. I ask my more educated friends as to why this attitude prevails. I haven't had a proper answer yet. Really is disturbing and no idea where it comes from.

Friend 4: (Filipina in Europe)

"One of the reasons why I love back to the Philippines is because of the sun. I love being dark. My husband and brother-in-law have been so jealous because, after few minutes in the sun, I am so dark already. They covered me once with a towel so I wont get darker lol,"

My Husband:

"See, and us foreigners... well a large part of what we love is the dark skin (not saying all Filipinas want foreigners)... but when our wives or gf's say "huhuhu my skin is getting black" when she actually glows in the dark almost it makes us scratch our heads. We live at the beach in San Juan and my poor wife is going crazy because she is getting darker... me (secret) I'm happy as hell!"

LOL

Anyway, in the ancient Philippines and some parts of Asia, fair complexion was more connected with class and economic well-being than general appeal. Whiter or paler skin represents more sophisticated, wealthy, and "sosyal" individuals who don't work under the sun. Europeans and Americans had a comparable fixation on fair complexion for a comparable explanation, yet transformed into tanned skin at a later age in light of the fact that tanned addresses rich individuals that have the opportunity to do relaxation exercises under the sun. One thing that is clear is that fair complexion was not explicitly alluring and darker skin was not referenced as unfortunate by any antiquated writing texts in the Philippines or different parts of the world. Skin tone is related to class, not by and large actual engaging quality.

Things being what they are, when did white skin turn into a positive property for all?

Whiter skin is viewed as Universal engaging quality for individuals that is adored by everybody. The stereotype of being whiter is overwhelming. White addresses virtue, and dark addresses evil. These days, it's hard to stay away from the strain to be perfect. Those with more obscure complexions are frequently being mocked for their darker tones. Yet, having that doesn't mean you are less important or deserving of loving yourself. Dealing with your confidence, taking great consideration of your complexion, and figuring out how to beat colorism are terrifically significant parts of adoring yourself.

Let's learn to embrace and accept our skin colors and start loving ourselves all over again. It's okay to use cosmetics minimally to enhance our beauty and self-confidence. Obsessing it though is truly a different story.

We have been enlightened that whiter complexion has more opportunities in modeling, entertainment, and fame on social media. However, at some point, this kind of belief is not healthy at all. I'm moreno and there are times when I compare my skin to other guys who has fairer skin. But at the end, being moreno or morena is what makes us Filipino. It just a matter of acceptance and confidence.

and while others want to become whiter, I want to become darker :D
but you're on point, @dennnmarc
They do that para "in" ka which is BS! Ooops sorry!
Good morning :)

I was born in the north of Venezuela, one of the most beautiful coasts of my country, however, from so much sun that fell on my head as a child, I did not like it much as an adult, so: there is no perfect complexion, as long as it is healthy, a little sun does not harm, but the lack of it does... Un abrazo amiga!

Nailed it, amiga! Good morning!

"Happy hump" day, I got the wrong end of the stick, duh!

who cares about skin colour, hell, beauty is only skin deep. I blame the media and instachatagram influencers for all the BS.

Nailed it, big bro @grindle!!!!!

❤️👍

I like dark skin, mommy 😍

Me too, Nani. ❤️

masaya mag paaraw sayang lang ang gluta injection at kojic soap hehe

True that, sis! Hehe. I don't use those either :D

Maitim ako pero maganda ako. Char. . Haha. I'm not describing myself nabasa ko lang po yan sa book of Solomon.

Lab eeet, sis!!!!!!!

I'm totally contented of what I am. Kainis nga pumuti ako sis kahit wala akong pang gluta hahaha. Morena talaga ako non as in.

Uy, napadaan ka, sis? hehe.
Gusto ko naman maging darker, sis hehe

Always nmn ako dadaan syo sis pg napagawi dito banda. Dami prblma eh kya di mkafocus.

Mgsunbathinh ka lagi dyan at tyak may pgbabago yern hehehe.

dami bang crabs, sis? oops!

Lighter skin is actually more likely to cause melanoma, it's not an advantage health wise.

I think the appeal might be that it makes one look different from a lot of the other girls? Novelty of any kind in looks can draw attention...

I so agree @wrestlingdesires
Thank you so much!!

magbibilad ako bukas sa araw aghapon sis! haha

I jave darker skin way back wen I was younger but yung mga parts lang na naeexpose sa sun. Now that I am working in an office, char. I looked lighter but the truth is that I look pale lalo na at lagi din akong nag ja jacket sa labas.
but yeah, many Filipinas are obsessed in looking whiter indeed, sa totoo lang naawa ako sa kanila, sa pag papaganda kasi nabubuhos ang pera nila

Nasa dagat din akong maghapon, sis. Gusto ko din sanang maging tan hehe.

ahaha, naku baka need mo pa mag bikini para panay yung pagka tan sism di tulad ko , parang zebra haha

Pag maputi daw, mas maganda. Parang hindi rin naman lagi. 😅

It's still in the eye of the beholder. And the thing is, we cannot please everyone Kaya dapat be happy and contented with what we have. Pwede naman mag skin care, pero wag naman siguro super obsessed to the point the gusto na burahin ang natural color. Lol

Lol tumpak, sis!!!

This just goes to show that we are still slaves of stereotypes. We are just driving ourselves crazy by these standards.

Preach, sister!!!!
