Safety First, a five minute freewrite

"Safety First!" the sign read.

Jen bit her lip. It would be funny if it wasn't so tragic.

The Company didn't give a shit about safety! It only cared if Safety got in the way of Profit, in which case they did care: and did everything they could to get rid of the barriers to making more money - even if it risked the lives of those whose toil made them the money.

Brad had died for no good reason.

The "accident" (Jen didn't really think the word applied when the Company's action was responsible for the safety lapses that led to Brad's demise) was preventable. In fact similar incidents had been avoided only two months ago, before the new "regulations" had been adopted.

Her hand itched to rip the poster from the wall. But she resisted. The Company was looking for any excuse to fire her and the other "trouble makers" who were asking questions about their role in the deaths and injuries that had occurred since they had relaxed the safety rules. Instead she walked on, promising Brad's memory that she would do what she could to bring those responsible to justice.
