MicroFiction: A 250 word story format that I often utilize to address the daily prompts. The story today is written using the word prompt "figure it out".
...Often, individuals struggle with life's complexities and situations to the point where they can't distinguish another person's underlying intent. They see through rose-colored glasses only what they wish. This is especially true in romantic relationships. A person's true nature sometimes is hidden until it's too late. Circumstances may reach a point where extracting yourself isn't an option.
For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of 11 November 2025, @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2918: figure it out; and
7 November 2025, @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2914: fence of offence.
Below is my story:
"Closing out a lengthy investigation, a heat of passion gruesome crime authorities surmised," Wilbur blurted after several sips of bourbon.
All in the group enjoying the night out suppressed a laugh. Two companions glared sideways at the liquid spilled onto Wilbur's shirt. One, jerked his head around and glanced into the distance, frowning as though the loud club music was inappropriate. Still another Sam, nicknamed by the group "Slick", stared back at Wilbur's glossy eyes before daring to dispute his summation of the case.
"If you ask me," Slick started after rearing back in his chair, "for three years, Victoria sat on the fence of her offence. I could've warned her she'd chosen hastily if not unwisely. Having a master's degree didn't help that situation. Sometimes, the university of hard knocks called "common sense." has to kick in.
All turned toward Slick. For several long moments, they pondered his absurd assessment of their biker club buddies, Nick and Victoria's relationship.
Recently labeled toxic, all agreed that Victoria's initial entrance into their biking group was accepted with harmony. An easygoing young lady, her attributes quickly captured their leader, Nick's attention.
It wasn't Victoria's skill in the bedroom and boardroom that excited him, but her superior biking skills and quick adaptation to rules and a way of life not meant for everyone. Nick's motor bike expertise won him small acclaim. His daredevil antics didn't.
"It was calculated," Slick stressed. "Knowing Nick, he wouldn't allow anyone, particularly an unworthy female, to outperform him."
