You are correct @madaug. He's not the most emotionally intelligent person for someone who is a parent and spouse. His family was doomed to be broken apart at some point. He'd already made the decision to leave them, which is sad for a father to do. But in this instance, it would make their lives better.
His untimely death was a saving grace for the mother and son.
