My first time in a self driving car

in STEMGeeks2 months ago

Hello,

I am excited to share my experience in a self driving car. I live in Arizona, close to Phoenix and there are a lot of self driving cars here. I have seen them around. While I was driving, I would look over and see and empty drivers seat. What? It was driving on its own. Fascinating.

When my friend Sara came to visit and wanted to go in one I said yes!

Sara posing with the Waymo car

The company we used is called Waymo and the car is a very nice Jaguar. Waymo operates in certain locations so we had to drive to a pick up spot. She reserved the car and we went to Target. :)

Here is a video of our drive to Target.

While it was very strange to see the wheel turn and the car move with no one in the front seat I felt completely safe.

The car talked to us and welcomed us into the car, called Sara by name (nice touch).

The screen for the backseat was really nice, giving you a feel of the traffic around you. It kinda looked like Frogger, if you are old enough to remember that Atari game. :)

We made it to Target. While I did feel completely safe driving Waymo still has to iron out the kinks of the drop off and pick up. The road in front of Target was two lanes. It stayed in the lane of traffic for a very long time blocking the cars behind it.

Even worse was the pick up. Here is a video. You can see the cars that it was blocking as it waited for us in the lane used for traffic.

Here is one more video of the last part of the adventure.

Would I do it again. YES! I have my own car and don't have much need for one, and because Waymo doesn't service my neighborhood I am not sure when I will use it again. I will though and look forward to it. Maybe in March when Sara comes back to visit.

So fun that self driving cars are now a reality!

That was a nice experience! Tbh, I feel odd when my wife is driving, and I have no idea how it would be to have NO DRIVER at all! 😃
Those small steering wheel moves when you were waiting at the traffic lights were creepy... lol... I would definitely try it, but not sure if I would use it more often...

Thanks for sharing!!!

Glad you enjoyed the post and curated it. It was a cool experience and very strange to see the steering wheel moving!

I have heard about self driving cars and come to think of it, in as much as I believe it is the advancement of technology, but there is still one part of me that is afraid to enter the car

I can see being a bit afraid, it was great and I felt so safe.

omg!! that's so weird, and surreal!

On the drop off and pick up, did it just stop on the side of the road ignoring all the traffic rather than park in the parking lot? It must be quite annoying for other drivers.

And is self driving legal all over America now, or is it just in certain states? It might be nice experience to try out sometime, I don't think we have it over here

It is really quite amazing. Good thing for video. In pictures you can't tell. Yes, it really needs to learn to park!!

I don't know if it is legal everywhere in the US. I just looked it up and Waymo, the company we used, is only in Phoenix and San Francisco. I didn't realize that it is so limited. Cool. When you come visit AZ you will have to go in one. :)

Driving a car is easy if our focus is on driving then we can avoid accidents.I myself learned driving two years ago and now I drive a car.

That is great that you have started to learn to drive a car recently. This car that we went in does not have a person driving. It drives itself.

A dangerous experience i would say

I don't think I could do it. I prefer to be in charge of the metal beast that could kill me, LOL!

I am just trying to imagine how the feelings experience will have been

Its really amazing experience and thinkable how much technology has been developed by man.. I have seen first time a self driving car.
