Exploring an Enigmatic Trail within the Anaga Forests🌳🌲🚶‍♂️[ENG-ESP]

Although this was not my first visit to the area, it was my first trip to a beautiful circular trail called Sendero de los Enigmas or Sendero de Hija Cambada, which has a circular route and lasts about an hour and a half. My first visit to Anaga Rural Park was when I hiked the Sendero de Los Sentidos, and I also posted a 3Speak video about that hike which you can find in that post. A few weeks later, I returned to the place to hike this other trail, a bit similar but longer.

Aunque esta no fue mi primera visita a la zona, si fue mi primer recorrido a un hermoso sendero circular que es llamado Sendero de los Enigmas o Sendero de Hija Cambada, el cual tiene un recorrido circular y una duración aproximada de hora y media. Mi primera visita al Parque Rural de Anaga fue cuando recorrí el Sendero de Los Sentidos, y también publiqué un video de 3Speak sobre esa caminata que puedes encotrar en dicho post. Unas semanas más tarde, volvía al lugar para recorrer este otro sendero, un poco parecido pero más largo.

The route begins in Cruz del Carmen, a small crossroads on the road that runs through the mountains of Anaga and connects with the town of San Cristobal de La Laguna. At this point, several trails begin and converge. One of them is the Sendero de Los Enigmas, which runs through part of what is the forest of Los Enigmas. I don't know why it has that name, although the landscape is a bit mysterious and enigmatic at some points. At first, I was a bit confused about the actual start of the trail, since no signage explicitly says so. There is a sign that says "Los Enigmas", but a little further on the trail forks in two and you come across two signposts and a sign that does not mention anything that says "Enigmas", but rather "Sendero de Hija Cambada" and "El Batán". Perhaps this is the reason for the name of the trail (Enigmas) as it is a puzzle to know where it starts. I don't like it when the signs of a place are not clear, but since I am good at finding my way around, I chose the path to the right, as I wanted to walk the trail counterclockwise.

El recorrido inicia en Cruz del Carmen, una pequeña encrucijada en la carretera que recorre las montañas de Anaga y se conecta con la población de San Cristóbal de La Laguna. En este punto, inician y convergen diversos senderos. Uno de ellos es el Sendero de Los Enigmas, el cual recorre parte de lo que es el bosque de Los Enigmas. Desconozco porqué tiene ese nombre, aunque el paisaje es un poco misterioso y enigmático en algunos puntos. Al principio, estuve un poco confundido con el inicio real del sendero, puesto que no hay una señalización que explícitamente lo diga. Es decir, si hay una señalización que dice "Los Enigmas", pero poco más adelante el camino se bifurca en dos y te encuentras con dos señalizaciones y un cartel que no mencionan nada que diga "Enigmas", sino más bien "Sendero de Hija Cambada" y "El Batán". Quizás esta sea la razón del nombre que tiene el sendero (Enigmas) ya que es un enigma saber donde empieza. No me gusta cuando las señalizaciones de un lugar no son claras, pero dado que soy bueno orientándome, escogí el camino de la derecha, ya que quise recorrer el sendero en sentido anti-horario.

The first half hour of the ride was practically in a straight line and always flat. Almost the entire route is relatively flat. If my perception does not fail, I was walking all that time along the crest of a mountain, until I reached another flat area where the road changes orientation. It is amazing how the vegetation and landscape varied so much in this first straight stretch, you can see it in the photos. I arrived at an area where there was a small government building or shelter that was a bit abandoned. A little further on, I found a water well that springs naturally. If I remember correctly, there was a frog in it. The path now had a wall of rocks and dirt on the left side, which ran for a few meters until the trail reached another fork in the road.

La primera media hora de recorrido fue prácticamente en línea recta y siempre en plano. En realidad, casi todo el recorrido es relativamente plano. Si mi percepción no falla, estuve recorriendo todo ese rato la cresta de una montaña, hasta llegar a otra zona plana donde el camino cambia de orientación. Es asombroso como la vegetación y paisaje varió tanto en este primer tramo recto, lo pueden ver en las fotos. Llegué a una zona en donde se encuentra un pequeño edificio o refugio gubernamental un poco abandonado. Un poco más adelante, encontré un pozo de agua que brota naturalmete. Si mal no recuerdo, había una rana en ella. El camino ahora contaba con una pared de rocas y tierra del lado izquierdo, el cual recorre unos cuantos metros hasta que el sendero llega a otra bifurcación de caminos.

In the photos, you can see some red signs with numbers. These mark (more or less) the different trails that exist in the area. The fork I mentioned above connects with other trails in the area. That is, some trails pass over other trails, connecting. I don't remember exactly if I was being guided by a certain number, what I do know is that I had a hiking App (Wikiloc) at hand in which I could see my position in real-time within the trail, and from there I knew which way to go. I must say that you should always have a map handy or some way to guide you before going on any trail. I say this because there are not always clear signposts and you can end up taking a route that is not, as happened to me later on. After taking a path that goes in a north-south direction, the trail meets a road, and you have to cross it to continue. Not many cars pass by so it is quite safe to cross.

En las fotos, pueden apreciar algunas señalizaciones rojas con números. Estas marcan (más o menos) los distintos recorridos que existen en el lugar. La bifurcación que comenté anteriormente, conecta con otros senderos de la zona. Es decir, hay senderos que pasan sobre otros senderos, conectándose entre sí. No recuerdo exactamente si estaba guiándome por determinado numero, lo que sí sé es que tenía a mano una App de senderismo (Wikiloc) en la cual podía ver mi posición en tiempo real dentro del sendero, y por allí sabía hacia qué camino ir. Debo decir que debes siempre tener un mapa a la mano o alguna forma de guiarte antes de ir a cualquier sendero. Lo digo porque no siempre hay señalizaciones claras y puedes terminar tomando una ruta que no es, cómo me sucedió más adelante. Luego de tomar un camino que va en dirección Norte-Sur, el sendero se topa con una carretera, y se debe cruzar para poder continuar. No pasan muchos coches por lo que es bastante seguro cruzar.

At the end of this second section, which runs parallel to the road in its final part, you reach a beautiful viewpoint facing south, where the town of La Laguna is located. You can see the sea to the east of the island. This is the area where you will find the most people on the entire trail. After this viewpoint (Zapata), we embark on the final stretch of the trail. This last stretch has areas with less vegetation and trees, as I remember it, and is perhaps even a bit warmer. It is here that I took a wrong turn and for 10 minutes I was walking in the wrong direction. As I was constantly checking my position on the map, I was able to realize the mistake. I should have crossed a little earlier on another road, which was a little difficult to see.

Podría decirse que este sendero se divide en tres tramos: uno que recorre la cresta de una montaña en direcciòn Este-Oeste, otro que va de Norte a Sur, y un tramo final que va de regreso de Oeste a Este. Al final de este segundo tramo, el cual transcurre paralelo a la carretera en su parte final, se llega a un hermoso mirador que da hacia el sur, en donde se encuentra la población de La Laguna. Se puede ver el mar hacia la zona Este de la isla. Esta es la zona en donde encontrarás más personas en todo el sendero. Luego de este mirador (Zapata), nos embarcamos al tramo final del sendero. Este último tramo posee zonas con menos vegetación y árboles, según como lo recuerdo, y es quizás hasta un poco más caluroso. Es aqui en donde tomé un camino equivocado y durante 10 minutos estuve caminando en dirección equivocada. Ya que estuve costantemente revisando mi posición en el mapa, pude darme cuenta del error. Debía haber cruzado un poco antes en otro camino, el cual era un poco difícil de ver.

One of my favorite areas of the trail is at the end, where the trees form a kind of tunnel and also look mysterious. A wooden railing separates the trail from another road that appears on the site and provides a very photogenic landscape. When you see this guardrail, you know that there are only a few minutes left to have gone all the way around the trail, if you walk it counterclockwise as I did. It is here that some stairs of buried reeds appear and at the end, you come across the sign and the couple of signs that say "Sendero de Hija Cambada" that we found at the beginning. I liked this trail, although I would improve the signage to avoid confusion among visitors.

Una de mis zonas favoritas del sendero es al final, en donde los árboles forman una especie de túnel y además tienen un aspecto misterioso. Una varanda de madera separa al sendero de otra carretera que aparece en el lugar, y brinda un paisaje muy fotogénico. Al ver esta varanda, ya sabes que quedan pocos minutos para haber dado la vuelta completa al sendero, si es que lo recorres en sentido anti-horario como yo lo hice. Es aquí donde unas escaleras de juncos enterrados aparece y al final te encuentras con el cartel y el par de señales que dicen "Sendero de Hija Cambada" que encontramos al inicio. Me gustó mucho este sendero, aunque yo mejoraría la señalización para evitar confusiones entre los que lo visitan.
