Mataram Kotagede Grand Mosque - Yogyakarta

in Worldmappinyesterday

YOGYAKARTA (1).jpg

Do you believe that this mosque is much older than Indonesia's independence? Even more than that, this mosque is the third oldest mosque among other old mosques in the city of Yogyakarta. The Mataram Kotagede Grand Mosque is a mosque that has exixt since 1856. It turns out that for more than a century, this mosque has used as a place of prayer for the Muslim community in the city of Yogyakarta.

Initially, I was only looking for some old city sites in Yogyakarta, because this city is one of the big cities from the past to the present. In fact, the city of Yogyakarta was once the capital of Indonesia after independence, this is what caused so many interesting things about the history and life of the past in Indonesia. It can be said that the center for finding heritage and culture that is still preserved.

This mosque has its own beauty and story. I thought about exploring part of the mosque area, it has a large area, but not the main building. In fact, this mosque is indeed large in terms of yard area, even used as a place to take pictures and even take pre-wedding photos and others, for one thing. This place is very aesthetic to reflect Javanese culture.

With a building without walls, there is only wood like a joglo, where the breeze enters every corner of the room, making this mosque very comfortable to stop by. In fact, there are many people resting and sleeping to restore their bodies. Unbearable drowsiness is a tough test here, especially if you are serious about praying.

Right in front of the mosque, there is a pond that surrounds the main building of the mosque. There are several fish that we call 'sweeping fish' that seem to be swimming among the clear water. The pond is clean and odorless, the mosque does symbolize cleanliness and purity, it is evident in this mosque.

Ornaments that combine Javanese architecture can be seen from the many items in the room. Although it looks very simple but classy. The hanging chandeliers will attract attention at night. The chandelier became very viral in its time, even often seen in the homes of rich people in ancient times. It is still used and even gives the impression of 'old is gold'.

There are rules that must be obeyed when you are here. This mosque is still under the supervision of the Yogyakarta palace, because it is one of the legacies of our ancestors, so whatever you do here must be according to the palace's standards. But, I like the vibes here because there are many kids, teenager and people playing, especially in the afternoon waiting for the coming of the day. I feel like I'm back in the past, 20 years ago.

See you the next time hive friends!

A mosque is a place where Muslims pray. This mosque in Indonesia is so old that it is hard to tell. It is natural that it will be clean. It is nice to see that the traditional mosque is still operating with the beauty of the surroundings and nature. The design and traditional architecture are truly impressive. Have a good day.
