Today I spared some of my time to visit a church that holds a historical importance in the big developing town of Obosi, located in Anambra State which is in the south eastern part of Nigeria. Nigeria is located in west Africa. St Andrew's Anglican church was established in the year 1882. It is a church which is located within a small community in Obosi in a place called Obinagu Ire and it remains the oldest church in the region. While I got to the location, I discovered there were three roads that passed from all three sides of the church and they were all tarred roads which are good looking with no potholes. The first thing my eyes saw from a far distance even before I got to the location was the church's tall tower.
When I landed in front of the church the first thing I saw from the road opposite to its gate was the name of the church, some words from the Bible and the year of its establishment, which also included in the pictures I've taken and when I walked in through the gates and turned to face the gate, I saw the same letters and the year the church was founded.
When I entered the church compound the first thing I noticed was its beautiful aesthetics, everything appeared to be planned and perfectly arranged.
Although the carpet grasses had started changing colors due to the harmattan season, the flowers' beauty stood out unchallenged.
When I turned around to capture the details of the church gate from the inside I found out that the tarred road which is directly across from the church gate is the most busy one.
The church compound is very clean and well kept, I noticed some part of the big compound is used as a playground and there is clearly a second building which serves as a school for kindergarten and behind the church building is another building which is the personage, so it's okay to say it plays a significant role in the community's religious and social life. It is stated that it was Mr J. Strong, a man from Sierra Leone who laid the foundation of the church in 1882.its initial structures were said to be of bamboo sticks which was used to formally the walls and a wattle roof but it was later developed and enlarged so that it can have more capacity to contain its growing congregation and facilities.
I found out that the church looked new as though it had recently been repainted, although In my pictures I was able to capture some parts of the church that appear to show how old the church painting is. I found some trees within the compound, they were not big gigantic trees but they were a bit tall and shady. The entire church compound was fenced and there were flowers planted along the inside near the fence. Altogether the church has three gateways to come in or live in the compound.
The church ground was interlocked and it helped control where grasses grow and created a smooth walkway with no visibility of sand.
I noticed that from inside the church compound, the church tower can be seen standing solidly tall and appearing gigantic, a beautiful piece of architectural work that will leave you wondering how strong it can be today because of how old the building is. Also my curiosity brought me closer to the tower and it was indeed huge. I took the liberty of climbing through the stairs till I entered inside the tower through one of its doors and from the inside I could see little views of the outside which made the windows appear to be somehow smaller than I thought.
The tower was painted with bright yellow on the inside and there was a big chain for the heavy bell which remained hanging on the tower though there was no way to get its pictures because the chain was made to pass through a hollow point just about the size of the chain till it touched down and some part of the chain remained on the floor.
When I got inside the church I found out there were wide screen plasma TVs on almost all the pillars inside the church except a few. From other churches I've been to I understand these televisions are to bring closer to the people especially those at the back the Bible reading and the activities that are taking place in the front.
The seats were properly arranged, the lights, the fans and the pulpit. I found out that the church has a three way entrance door. When I came outside of the church from the back side, it was quite different but looked cool to me. Coming to the front of the church from a different direction from the one I took before I saw places where tablet stones were laid with names written on them and I believe these names were the names of the dead who must be really important to the church. The church and its environment looked completely empty with only sounds of a few people on the upstairs of the nearby personage but I didn't get to see anybody.
Before I left the church environment, I came and stood in front of the church and took one last look at it. I may definitely be back at it another time but for a different purpose.
As I headed out and went across the gate, I took one of the roads, especially the less busy one and even as I go seeking for any thing of interest to capture in the location, I found out that each time looked behind me, the church tower will be tall and remained visible and honestly it remained visible especially the upper part of it until I went far and left the location entirely.
