Patal Bhuvneshwar is one of the most mysterious and spiritual places in Uttarakhand. Situated 1350 meters above sea level, this secret pilgrimage site is mainly dedicated to Lord Shiva. Patal Bhuvneshwar is a limestone cave located 13 km from Gangolighat in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand state. The path to Patal Bhuvneshwar cave goes through a long and narrow tunnel.

Apart from Lord Shiva, the forms of Sheshnag, Kaal Bhairav, Ganesha and many other gods and goddesses can be seen in Patal Bhuvneshwar. Patal Bhuvneshwar Temple is located in Gangolihat in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. To see Lord Shiva in this temple, one has to go to the cave and not on any mountain. Patal Bhuvneshwar Temple is surrounded by dense forests of pine.

According to the Puranas, Patal Bhuvneshwar is considered to be the only temple from where one can see the four Dhams i.e. Kedarnath, Badrinath, Amarnath. Kedarnath, Badrinath, Mata Bhuvaneshwari, Adi Ganesha, Lord Shiva's Jatas, seven ponds, Mukti Dwar, Dharma Dwar and figures of other gods and goddesses can be seen in the cave.

It is believed that 33 crore gods and goddesses reside in the Patal Bhuvaneshwar temple. Talking about the discovery of this temple, it is told in the Puranas that it was discovered by King Rituparna of the Surya dynasty in the Treta Yuga, who ruled Ayodhya at that time. It has been mentioned in Manas Khand and Skanda Purana.

After this, the Pandavas discovered this temple in the Dwapar era. Where he played Chaupar with Lord Shiva. After this, Jagat Guru Shankaracharya discovered this cave around 819 AD and he himself informed the king about it. After this, priests (Bhandari family) were brought by the kings for worship in the cave.

According to Hindu Puranas, Lord Shiva got angry and beheaded Lord Ganesha. Later, on the request of Mother Parvati, an elephant's head was put on Ganesha. It is believed that the head that Lord Shiva had cut off is present in the Patal Bhuvneshwar cave. In this cave, just above the idol of Ganesha in the form of a cut rock, there is a rock in the form of Brahmakamal with 108 petals.

According to mythology, there are four gates in the Patal Bhuvneshwar temple. Whose names are Aur Dwar, Paap Dwar, Dharma Dwar and Moksha Dwar respectively. It is believed that when Lankapati Ravana died, the Paap Dwar was closed. After this, after the war of Mahabharata, the Rann Dwar was closed. Now only two gates are open.

Patal Bhuvneshwar temple is considered very special. This cave is full of mysteries in itself. It is said that there are four pillars here, which are named according to the eras i.e. Satyayug, Tretayug, Dwapar Yug and Kaliyug. There has been no change in any pillar except the pillar of Kaliyug. This pillar is higher than all the three pillars. Along with this, the size of the Shivlinga installed here is also increasing rapidly. According to mythological beliefs, it is believed that when this Shivlinga touches the roof of the cave, the world will end.
