Although the Banco de la República Cultural Center is made up of the Miguel Urrutia Art Museum, the “Casa de la Moneda” and the Botero Museum located in the central area of La Candelaria, which is part of the Historic Center of Bogotá, we have decided to present only an important part of it.

The visit of my brothers-in-law to Bogotá and the kindness of my friend and university colleague Luz Marina Rivas, who lives in this beautiful city, were conducive to asking them to take photographs of the city that I share with much affection with all of you.

Without wanting to be personalistic, I have been to this city at least 10 times, in my already long life. At the age of 12, I made my first visit with my father, until about 6 years ago when I went on academic functions; therefore, I am witness to the changes that this Latin American city has undergone from every point of view: architectural, political, cultural, social and recreational.

Of the iconic places that make up the buildings of the Banco de la República cultural complex, I have chosen “La Casa de la Moneda” and “El Museo Botero” as irrefutable examples of the richness of its facilities.

For visitors to the city, it is a mandatory stop to visit the Botero Museum, which was inaugurated in 2000 with 208 works donated by the Colombian artist Fernando Botero, 123 of which he authored, and the rest is made up, for example, by works by international artists such as Picasso, Renoir, Dalí, Monet, Degas, Chagall, among others.

Botero himself redesigned the premises, which was a colonial mansion where the Archbishopric of the city functioned and where, since 1955, the Bank's art collection was located. The restoration allowed to place there the pieces that we can enjoy for free today and that have turned it into a museum of recognized prestige in the city by locals and foreigners. The museography was carried out respecting the colors with shades of white and green characteristic of the architecture of the area.

The museum is characterized by being very well lit, with lots of natural light in the common spaces and artificial light that is very well distributed in the exhibition halls. A delight is, in addition to enjoying the collections, resting in its internal gardens in a city with an ideal temperature since during the year it rarely exceeds 20 degrees and on rare occasions it drops below 3o C.

On the other hand, the “Casa de la Moneda” was founded in the 17th century by the military engineer Alonso Turrillo de Yebra, and since 1975 it has been a national monument. There we find the numismatic collection of the Banco de la República, open to the public since 1961.

The first gold coins of the New Kingdom were minted in this building. Despite the fact that the building has undergone restorations to adapt it to modern and much more voluminous machinery for making coins, some parts of it still retain their original appearance, fundamentally its columns and arches in the main courtyard, as well as some exhibition rooms. The original machinery was not thrown away or discarded, but is part of the historical heritage that the museum gives us.
