RE: The Mosque of Suleiman the Magnificent in Istanbul, Turkey

Dang, that is pretty impressive. I wouldn't have guessed it was that old. It kind of makes you wonder how awesome some of the buildings that got destroyed in wars over the centuries must have looked. I bet they were amazing!

This is very true and Istanbul is a great example of that happening. When it was Byzantium it was a pagan city. When the Romans converted to Christianity and called it Constantinople in 330AD they got rid of many of the pagan temples. You can see some of the remnants from those temples in the Basilica Cistern where they were re-used to build a water reservoir. Then the same thing happened again when the Ottoman's took over in 1453. They tore down a lot of the Roman/Christian buildings to make way for their grand mosques and the like. An example from that time is the Roman hippodrome which was huge and fell to ruin. Only the foot print of it remains today, but old drawings of it from the 16th century show that it must have been spectacular.

Exactly!
