If the mention of the planet Arrakis doesn't remind you of anything, you need to read more or watch more movies. Arrakis is the desert planet featured in Frank Herbert's Dune saga, adapted to film several times, most recently by Denis Villeneuve and starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgård, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, and many other big names. If you haven't seen it yet, I don't know what you're waiting for. Now, was I really on Arrakis? Obviously not, but for a moment, it felt that way.

Arrakis es el planeta desértico que aparece en la saga de Dune de Frank Herbert, adaptada al cine en varias oportunidades, más recientemente de la mano de Denis Villeneuve y con la participación de Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgård, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin y muchos otros grandes nombres. Si no la has visto aún, no sé que estás esperando. Ahora bien ¿estuve realmente en Arrakis? Obviamente no, pero por un momento se sintió así.

Dunes

Some of the most memorable sequences in the book Dune and its films take place in the desert, amidst the dunes, those mountains of sand that move in the wind and reflect sunlight in golden hues as far as the horizon reaches. On several occasions I've been able to contemplate a spectacle like that, the sand stretching toward the horizon until it drowns in the sea. But where is this place I'm showing you? It's the Concón Dunes. A little less than an hour and a half away from the city of Santiago, Chile's capital, one reaches the coast, the Pacific Ocean, and there, skirting the coast heading north, one can tour the iconic Valparaíso, a port city immortalized in Chilean memory, poetry, and imagination; then there's Viña del Mar, home to the famous song festival and some very beautiful beaches; And then, a little further north of Reñaca—a beautiful part of Viña del Mar—you reach Concón, this small town whose main attraction is these dunes and the views you can get from there, not only of the ocean and the city but also of the entire coastline of Viña del Mar and Valparaíso. One of the most incredible experiences one can have is walking along the coast—there is a path for this purpose—from Reñaca until you reach, after about an hour, the spectacle that is the Concón dunes.

Algunas de las secuencias más memorables del libro Dune y sus películas son las que ocurren en el desierto, en medio de las dunas, esas montañas de arena que se mueven con el viento y que reflejan la luz solar en tonos dorados hasta donde alcanza el horizonte. En varias oportunidades he podido contemplar un espectáculo como ese, la arena extendiéndose hacia el horizonte hasta ahogarse en el mar. Pero, ¿dónde es este lugar que le estoy mostrando? Se trata de las Dunas de Concón. A poco menos de una hora y media de camino desde la ciudad de Santiago, capital de Chile, uno llega a la costa, al Océano Pacífico, y allí bordeando la Costa en dirección al Norte uno puede recorrer la icónica Valparaíso, ciudad portuaria inmortalizada en la memoria, la poesía y el imaginario chileno; luego se encuentra Viña del Mar, hogar del famoso festival de canto y de unas playas muy hermosas; y luego, un poco más al norte de Reñaca - un sector hermoso de Viña del Mar - se llega hasta Concón, esta pequeña ciudad cuyo atractivo principal son estas dunas y las vistas que se pueden tener desde allí no sólo del océano y la ciudad sino también de todo el borde costero de Viña del Mar y Valparaíso. Una de las experiencias más increíbles que uno puede tener es caminar bordeando la costa - existe un camino habilitado para ello - desde Reñaca hasta llegar, al cabo de más o menos una hora - a ese espectáculo que son las dunas de Concón.

Up there, people climb to observe the horizon, to record videos (some with their drones), to enjoy a snack while watching the sunset—a highly recommended view—and the more adventurous slide down the mountain, either rolling, running, or sandboarding, just like influencer Speed ​​did during his visit to the country. This is something I haven't had the chance to do yet, but have had on my list for a while now. Of all this, I think the most beautiful thing is climbing up to watch the sunset. Although the colors of the horizon don't appear equally reddish or bright every afternoon, it's always a worthwhile moment.

Allí arriba la gente sube a observar el horizonte, a grabar videos - algunos con sus drones - a disfrutar de alguna merienda viendo el atardecer - panorama altamente recomendable - y los más aventureros se deslizan montaña abajo ya sea rodando, corriendo o haciendo sandboard tal como hizo el influencer Speed en su visita al país, algo que aún no he tenido la oportunidad de hacer, pero que tengo en lista desde hace algún rato. De todo esto, creo que lo más hermoso es subir a ver caer el sol y aunque no todas las tardes los colores del horizonte se presentan igual de rojizos o brillantes, es un momento que siempre vale la pena.

The road at the edge of the ocean

My phone's camera isn't the best, but I think it captures a bit of the wonder of the experience. Sitting atop one of these majestic sand mountains, I was able to contemplate the sunset and take in the Pacific Ocean, the city of Concón, and the highway that runs along the Chilean coast, blending the natural with the urban. This has been a controversial topic because in the past, the land covered by the dunes was larger, but part of that surface has been sold for building construction, which in some cases has had to be abandoned due to foundation failures. Locals have tried to stop any further construction projects that would further reduce the dunes, especially considering that, according to projections, sea levels will rise in the coming years and the Chilean coast will lose many of its beaches and other spaces. For now, they seem to have succeeded, so people can come—admission and access are free—and enjoy this miniature version of the dunes on the planet Arrakis. When I was younger, I was able to visit the Coro dunes in Venezuela, which are much larger—and they do look like a vast desert—but unfortunately, I don't have any photographs from that trip. La cámara de mi teléfono no es la mejor, pero creo que alcanza a comunicar un poco de lo maravilloso de la experiencia. Sentado en la cima de una de estas majestuosas montañas de arena, pude sentarme a contemplar el atardecer y abarcar con mi mirada el océano pacífico, la ciudad de Concón y esa carretera que bordea la costa chilena en una fusión de lo natural con lo urbano. Esto último ha sido un tema controversial porque en el pasado el terreno que abarcaban las dunas era más amplio, pero parte de esa superficie ha sido vendida para la construcción de inmuebles que en algunos casos han debido abandonarse debido a fallas en los cimientos y los locales han intentado detener cualquier otro proyecto de construcción que siga reduciendo las dunas aún más, sobre todo considerando que de acuerdo a las proyecciones, el nivel del mar subirá en los próximos años y la costa chilena perderá muchas de sus playas y espacios. De momento, parecen haberlo conseguido, así que la gente puede venir - la entrada es gratuita y el acceso es libre - y disfrutar de esta versión miniatura de las dunas del planeta Arrakis. Siendo más joven pude conocer los médanos de Coro en Venezuela, cuya extensión territorial es muchísimo más grande - y esos sí se ven como un enorme desierto - pero lamentablemente no conservo fotografías de ese viaje. So, now you know, when you come to Chile or when you go to the fifth region—those who live in this country—don't hesitate to include Concón in your visit to Viña and Valparaíso. My recommendation would be to stay in Viña for at least a couple of days and also take advantage of the nearby opportunities to explore the other two cities. The beautiful beaches of Viña, the colorful hills of Valparaíso, and the Concón Dunes are three must-see destinations for a single trip. Who among you has had the opportunity to visit these places?
