Dive Adventure at Sithanane Pare – White Worm & Reef Friends

in Worldmappin14 days ago

Travel the world and dive the ocean

One of my favorite thing is to enjoy new places on this globe, meet local people, have good food and go for a dive. Sure, sometimes there is a beer involved.

This happend today at the dive spot called Sithanane Pare. I’m not 100% sure about the exact name, but it’s close to Nilaveli in lovely Sri Lanka.

Hey Hive Family
let‘s have a nice dive report
and let us travel the world again

Start at Pearl Divers

We kicked off the day at the Pearl Divers Location, right on Sandy Beach in Nilaveli.

The crew expertly launched us into the aqua‑blue waters, and soon our little boat was gliding across the calm sea. Sunlight danced on the waves, and our captain’s navigational stories had us smiling.

Voyage to Seedana

Thanks to our captain’s sharp skill, we reached the dive site “Sithanane Pare”, located off Sri Lanka’s southern coast. The ocean was a warm ~28 °C, with visibility of 10+m ideal for reef exploration.

Underwater Highlights (~18 m, ~45 min)

The magic with diving a new dive spot is the you never know what you get.

This was our “Menue” for the morning dive.

  • White bristle worm (Haplosyllis sp.) weaving through sponge branches—its delicate tentacles waving like fragile ballet dancers.
  • A majestic black lionfish, its fins unfurled like a gothic flourish.
  • A tiny nudibranch sliding along coral like a living jewel (no good picture).
  • A few proud starfish (“Seesterne”) clinging to rocks, statuesque and serene.

Our dive felt like entering a living aquarium—rich textures, vibrant colors, and mesmerizing motion.

What I expected

I read a bit Sithanane Pare Dive Site and learned so far that it offers „Rocks, Reef & Rich Marine Life“

The Sithanane Pare dive site kicks off at about 5 m depth, above rugged rocky outcrops. You then descend over vibrant reef structures into a 13–15 m average depth, with a sandy trough at the reef edge reaching 18 m

Why it's great:
This is exactly what we got. Visibility could be better but Sithanane Pare offers still a dynamic dive. From rocky terrain to sandy drop-off—with abundant marine life and stunning coral diversity. It's a must-dive for fans of both macro critters and larger reef fish. Sadly even here we saw less intact coral as we expected.

My Dive Video

Sure, as a pro diver I have not even my GoPro with me.

Even better - I added a quality diving lamp and some filters for the camera. With this setup it is fun to shoot short videos like this one.

I still don’t know exactly what kind of animal this is, but I asked around at
inaturalist.org and maybe some experts will react.

More marinelife

A „Seestar“

At least in German translation

There was much much more to see. I film a bit but not all dive to make sure I enjoy the nature around me as well

Beach Landing Finale

boat to beach.jpeg

After surfacing, our captain throttled the engine and with a grin, he raced the boat straight onto the sandy beach, parking bow‑first.

We leapt off, salt‑streaked and laughing, as onlookers cheered our dramatic splash landing.

That was fun and a different way to land the boat.

✨ Why This Dive Was Magical

HighlightsBristle worm, lionfish, nudibranch, starfish
VibeAdventure, discovery, and beach‑landing fun
  • Spotting a sponge‑dwelling bristle worm (Haplosyllis sp.) felt like uncovering a hidden reef secret.
  • The mix of macro‑life—lionfish, nudibranchs, starfish—immersed us in biodiversity.
  • The beach parking stunt added a playful local touch to the adventure.

Calling Fellow Hive Divers

Hey @diveratt my fellow dive friend I sadly never met, @mister‑omortson (who’s shared Sri Lankan wreck dives) and @pranwala (Sri Lanka travel blogger) – have you come across these white bristle worms (Haplosyllis sp.) while diving in Sri Lanka? Or maybe @bitrocker2020 knows more about any macro footage, species tips, or sponge‑worm insights you'd like to share? I’d love to learn more!

My Final Thoughts

From the warm vibes at Pearl Divers to the thrill of Sithanane Pare reef and the beach‑side finale, this dive was pure joy.

We got a big package with Sun‑bleached memories, salty smiles, and a lot reef wonders.

I love to hear your reactions or macro‑dive tips! 🌊🪱🏖️

Have a great day everybody
and let us travel the world again

You are very welcome @detlev! it was well deserved. ☀️
We are already looking forward to reading more about your adventures!

Count on me and my travel in this lovely country.

Hi @detlev sadly I’ve not been diving for a couple of years no due to a medical issue hopefully back in the water next year. Sri Lanka is on the cards for a possible destination so this was a really handy post thanks.
Dive bonus this year I got to go to the MiDE dive show in Kuala Lumpur which is a great show and defiantly worth the flight out accommodation is so cheap in KL too.

When is this show? Same time at http://hivefe.st ??

Unfortunately not it’s usually end of May mid June got some great bargains this year OrcaTorch for about £50 less than the UK and a OM Systems TG7 and housing for about £350 less than UK.
It gets bigger every year there are some real bargains on diving around Malaysia too next year I’m planning on taking my dive gear and looking at diving around the islands for a few months.

I remember visiting Nilaveli Beach in 2005, during a brief peace period in the war. People were going to Pigeon Island, but I didn’t join them.

I’ve never had the chance to explore that area or dive in the eastern reefs of the island. But here at Hikkaduwa Reef, we had a similar diving experience—though I’ve never seen that white worm before.

We love the country for travel and diving. Next stop will be Pasikidah. Expect a post from there is a few days.

Our trip might go to Ella, Kandi and Melheim Beach, but all depends on weather and last minute decisions.

Pasikuda also a nice place to visit. Yeah the weather seems rainy here (south coast)

Enjoy!

We skipped this and ended up for some days in Arugam Bay Area.

Cool atmosphere here with all the surfers and backpackers

Yep weather changed very frequently. This is the nature of Sri Lanka. $WINE

Sounds like an epic dive! Sithanane Pare’s reefs and white worm sightings must be unforgettable.

What an exciting activity. I really want to try free diving because i find underwater so exciting and you can see different kind of fish and beautiful corals. Thankyou for sharing this photos. I feel like watching this im also diving😅

Thats great,it must be fun to dive in that place, but Im afraid of the deep, because I always think there might be a shark hahaha kidding, the starfish is beautiful, whats the one with the sting? Thats what we call a stingray here in our country, but the worm looks creepy to look at,well thanks for sharing the beautiful view under the sea.

Wow, @detlev, what an incredible diving experience at Sithanane Pare! 🐠
The white nudibranch and all those vibrant reef critters look absolutely breathtaking — your photos and descriptions truly bring the underwater world to life. I’m honored to see this mentioned here — thank you! 🇱🇰
Sri Lanka’s dive sites are genuinely unique, and your post beautifully showcases their magic.
Looking forward to hearing about your next adventure — wishing you safe travels and joyful dives!
So glad you came to Sri Lanka. There are many more beautiful places to explore. Wishing you happiness and good vibes!

What an amazing dive adventure at Sithanane Pare @detlev! 💖 It's amazing to see these unique marine life, especially that white bristle worm and the black lionfish ✨ It's great you captured some of it on video! It's so wonderful! 💖 The beach landing sounds like a fun and exciting end to the trip 🙌

This place is a paradise!
What beautiful images!
Thank you for making us part of this magical journey!

Stay tuned for more whenever I get energy for posting about the „Electric Ray“ we met the other day. Sure, I didn’t touched this.

Just because as being a pro diver - you don’t touch animals you meet. Especially in this case.

Phew... I imagine they are dangerous!

Wow, felt like i was right there on the reef with ya! That ghost-white worm is spooky-cool 🪱😂

Sri Lanka diving is def on my bucket list now. thx for sharing!

Welcome and let me know what places you dived lately.

Nice dive it seems!
Not too sure about the wormy things though….

Good morning,friend.
Wow, what a wonderful experience it must be to dive underwater and discover so many fascinating things! I visited there several years ago. I’m truly happy that you’ve come to my country.

Hi @hive.samadi we enjoy your country even above the sea level. All this friendly people, the great food and the nice weather.

We travel next Kandi and Ella - are you close?

@detlev
Hi there! 😊 That sounds amazing—I'm so glad you're enjoying Sri Lanka and its wonderful hospitality, food, and weather!

Kandy and Ella are both stunning destinations! I'm not based exactly there, but I'm in the southern part of the island, near Galle. Still, you're going to love the scenic train ride from Kandy to Ella—it's one of the most beautiful in the world. 🌿🚂

If you’re up for tips or local food suggestions on your journey, feel free to ask. Safe travels and keep enjoying this beautiful island! 🌺🇱🇰✨

Thanks @hive.samadi

we don’t yet plan the south on this trip but maybe 2 days in Puttalam and the peninsula there. Sunset, cool vibes and diving - do you have any recommendations?

It's been a long time haven't went back to diving, miss those days❤️ Enjoy yours🎉

Thanks.

Did a few more and try to post about

This was an enjoyable read. I feel like I went on the dive with you. And the video taken by your go pro? Magical. It's amazing to think that a whole other ecosystem exists deep inside the sea.
My favourite was the blue fish in your video, it swam away so quickly though😅.

Nice work!
