I have always wanted to know what an afternoon on a Mediterranean island would be like, to enjoy the colors of its sunsets and its gastronomy, although I have not been able to do it yet, I did manage to conquer something very close, enjoying a pleasant afternoon snack in the tourist town of Colonia del Sacramento in the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.

This is an incredible country, full of great landscapes, friendly people, and very well cared historical places, which today are an income generating pole within a small population, where the tourist product has a great value for people's lives, I know that because of my profession, which has allowed me to know many parts of the world and learn to value the money that the visit of tourists can bring to people in remote areas.
This small town from the time when the Spanish empire colonized America, is located on the banks of the Rio de la Plata, bordering the giant of the south, as the inhabitants colloquially call the neighboring Argentina, from where most of its visitors come from.
There are two ways to get to this point, the most beautiful is the old ferry that crosses the silver waters of the river to take you on a magical journey of about 2 hours; the other way is by car on the road that connects with Montevideo, that was the one I had to use, as I traveled with some friends from the city where we were working at that time.
Colonia is a town that catches you from the moment you cross the first of its stone streets, has a colorful lighthouse belonging to the navy of the country and a huge flag, which I think is the largest I've seen in my life, these wonders already spoke in a previous publication, but today I want to focus on their recreational spaces ranging from antique houses, museums and of course outdoor restaurants.
Something important to highlight is that a full day is not enough to visit all its attractions, just walking and visiting its natural attractions will take you a good part of your time and energy too, because the streets are quite steep and getting to the church is quite a journey, but it is worth it, to discover the works of Catholic art, described on the entrance plaque as the baroque type that is inside. In addition to a very well elaborate statue of Christ with glass eyes, which is simply impressive, because it has a touch of naturalness that transmits an energy of absolute peace.
After touring the central area and the main square, it was already past 4 pm, so I decided to sit in one of the restaurants overlooking the sea that is located on one of the high streets, to enjoy a snack, although when I sat down and saw the delicious menu they offered, I preferred instead of just a sweet, take the time to relax and take the stress out of my mind.
To imagine myself on a Mediterranean island, I ordered a bottle of red wine made in Uruguay along with some tapas or assorted appetizers. The cold weather of the afternoon, added to the fog that was beginning to arrive hiding at times the impressive view of the harbor, gave me everything I was looking for, I felt so comfortable in this place that I spent about 3 hours enjoying the excellent food, a varied selection of cold meats and course, more than one bottle of this excellent red wine, which made me forget about time until it got dark.
It was then that I decided to return to the hotel where I was staying with my friends, to tell them about my experience and enjoy a good chat in front of a warm fireplace enjoying more wine.
This tour around Colonia del Sacramento is one of the memories I will treasure forever in my life since I not only enjoyed the natural wonders of Uruguay and its landscapes, but I also had the opportunity to learn a lot about its past, plus some stories and cultural anecdotes of the locals about pirates, hidden treasures and even, some say that through this port, Adolf Hitler arrived in a German submarine to go to live in Argentina, after he escaped from Berlin, after the Second World War.

Un Paseo de Tarde en Colonia del Sacramento Uruguay
Este es un país increíble, lleno de grandes paisajes, gente amable y lugares históricos muy bien cuidados, que hoy en día son un polo generador de ingresos dentro de una población chica, donde el producto turístico tiene un gran valor para la vida de las personas, eso lo sé por mi profesión, la cual me ha permitido conocer muchas partes del mundo y aprender a valorar el dinero que la visita de turistas pueden aportar a las personas de zonas remotas.
Este pequeño pueblo de la época en que el imperio Español colonizaba América, está ubicado al margen del Río de la Plata, haciendo frontera con el gigante del sur, como le dicen coloquialmente los habitantes a la vecina Argentina, desde donde vienen la mayor parte de sus visitantes.
Existen dos maneras de llegar a este punto, la más hermosa es el viejo ferry que surca las aguas plateadas del río para llevarte en un viaje mágico de aproximadamente 2 horas; la otra forma es en auto por la carretera que comunica con Montevideo, esa fue la que tuve que utilizar, ya que viajé con unas amigas desde la ciudad donde estábamos trabajando en ese momento.
Colonia, es una localidad que te atrapa desde que cruzas por la primera de sus calles de piedra, posee un vistoso faro perteneciente a la marina del país y una inmensa bandera, que creo es la más grande que he visto en mi vida, de estas maravillas ya les hablé en una publicación anterior, pero hoy quiero enfocarme en sus espacios de esparcimiento que van desde casas de antigüedades, museos y por supuesto restaurantes al aire libre.
Algo importante a resaltar, es que un día completo no es suficiente para recorrer todas sus atracciones, tan solo caminar y visitar sus atractivos naturales, ya te tomara buena parte de tu tiempo y de tus energías también, porque las calles son bastante inclinadas y llegar a la iglesia es toda una travesía, pero que vale la pena, para descubrir las obras de arte católico, descritas en la placa de entrada como del tipo barroco que se encuentran en su interior. Además de una muy bien elaborada estatua de cristo con ojos de vidrio, que es sencillamente impresionante, porque tiene un toque de naturalidad que te trasmite una energía de paz absoluta.
Luego de recorrer el casco central y la plaza principal, eran ya pasadas las 4 de la tarde, así que decidí sentarme en uno de los restaurantes con vista al mar que se encuentran en una de las calles altas, para disfrutar de una merienda, aunque al sentarme y ver el delicioso menú que ofrecían, preferí en lugar de solo un dulce, aprovechar el momento para relajarme y sacar el estrés de mi mente.
Con el objetivo de imaginarme en una isla del mediterráneo, ordené una botella de vino tinto de fabricación en el Uruguay junto con unas tapas o entradas variadas. El clima frío de la tarde, sumado la niebla que empezaba a llegar ocultando por momentos la impresionante vista al puerto, me dio todo lo que estaba buscando, me sentí tan cómoda en este lugar que me pasé unas 3 horas disfrutando de la excelente comida, una variada selección de embutidos y por supuesto, más de una botella de este excelente vino tinto, que me hizo olvidarme del tiempo hasta que se hizo de noche.
Fue entonces que decidí regresar al hotel donde me hospedaba con mis amigas, para contarles sobre mi experiencia y disfrutar de una buena charla frente a una chimenea caliente disfrutando de más vino.
Este paseo por Colonia del Sacramento, es uno de los recuerdos que atesoraré por siempre en mi vida, ya que no solamente disfruté de las maravillas naturales de Uruguay y sus paisajes, si no que además tuve la oportunidad de conocer bastante sobre su pasado, sumado a algunos cuentos y anécdotas culturales de la gente de la zona sobre piratas, tesoros escondidos y hasta incluso, algunos aseguran que a través de ese puerto, llegó Adolf Hitler en un submarino alemán para luego ir a vivir a Argentina, tras su escape de Berlín, una vez finalizada la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Un paseo para todos los gustos, donde puedes vivir de primera mano emociones, placeres y relax, por eso te invito a conocer esta localidad y pasarla tan bien como yo.
