Hauptfriedhof. Koblenz. April 22

in Worldmappin2 years ago

The Hauptfriedhof, or main cemetery was on my route back to my hotel. It would have been very rude of me not to have popped in and have a wander. Would it not?

The Graveyard was consecrated in 1820, and is now the third largest forest cemetery in Germany. It sits on a steep slope, and the graves are on terracing amongst the trees.

A little bit of googling and it seems this young girl was credited as part of the team that produced the Gran Turismo games for the playstation

and on the reverse.....

_DSC3254.jpeg

.....looks more like the closing credits to star wars, how some folk want to make themselves the centre of attention, it just pisses me off to be honest. I mean "data capturing team"

Why?

The memorial to the Maring Family, in the centre Albert, a Jesuit priest who was very vocal against the Nazi party, the Gestapo arrested him in Lübeck for "anti-state activities". He died in Dachau concentration camp.

Standing in front of another family memorial a semi-circle of names and dates of birth and death entitled. "The Unknown"

Rudolf Sr. seems to have been at one time Mayor of the town and Rudolf Jr. died on the 27th Jan 1944 in Russia. On that exact date the Russian forces eventually relieved the siege of Leningrad.

So an enjoyable wander through part of this ancient graveyard, some folk of "distinction" some unknown, but all in all some gorgeous monuments. I hope this was of interest to you fellow tombstone tourists.

Dead Center of town normally interesting being an old cemetery, some interesting history found, some unusual to say the least.

a weird and wonderful mix, I wish I had spent more time there but I was exhausted after a full day walking the city

Normally peaceful quiet place is a cemetery, with interesting headstone designs, partial stories of those now long gone.

the headstones lasting longer than the incumbent ever did

Too much expense and emphasis placed on the dead, hope they were treated well when living....

One never sees a pretentious monument to poor people.

None whatsoever, more often than not our graveyards are not clean and tidy, vandals smash headstones, matters not who you are.

I like to walk in cemeteries, but in a nice ones as this. Oh, and during the day 😁

Old cemeteries smell of eternity, fresh burials smell of death.

That's true. Also, the old ones give some peace and the beauty of some monuments and statures invites us to walk there :)

I am not such a big conoisser of cemetaries as grindle, but cannot argue with this! very true. in the past monuments were much more beautiful, and surely can give peace to the soul. 🙏

nah, go at night 🤣

😱

I guess, for the real experience it's indeed better to go at night hahah

😂😂😂

spooky!!

Intresting examples of contemporary and older art.
This one especially entertained me, with its typography:

(died in Russland in 1944 at the age of 27! WWII... )

This one is super cool, no doubts:

cheers @qwerrie , I too find German fonts quite artistic, I wish I had spent longer wandering in the graveyard but I was knackered after walking all day, and it was getting cold

Those are very unique cemeteries, I have never seen those kind of tombs in my country

Thanks for sharing

cheers @queen-silvia thanks for stopping by, whereabouts are you?

Old cemeteries like that can be really neat to explore. The old grave stones, markers, and monuments can be really impressive. Not many people purchase the large and elaborate ones anymore.

no that's true, about monuments I guess, certainly here in the UK most people opt for cremation

Yeah it's way cheaper. Most do that here too. Prices are rising because of the demand though, or so I hear

Death is not a cheap affair
