Hace poco mientras veía unas cosas en Instagram, me llamó mucho la atención cuando leí la palabra pulpería, enseguida busqué y se trataba de La gran pulpería de libros y quedé encantada con el nombre. Ahora les cuento el por qué.

Mi papá cuando tenía unos 7 años empezó a trabajar en una pulpería que tenía su padrino Luis en Ciudad Bolivar, allí pasó varios años. Él llegó a ser tan responsable en su trabajo que su padrino se iba en los "vapores" (los barcos de vapor) a hacer las grandes compras y dejaba a mi papá encargado de la pulpería, tanto así que mi papá hasta iba al puerto cuando llegaban las cargas y era él quien seleccionaba y hacía la compra de la mercancía. En esa pulpería se reunía con grandes amigos e improvisaban obras de teatro, ya se vislumbraba su futuro... Mi papá fue un gran dramaturgo, director de teatro, profesor y Premio Nacional de Teatro el año 1995.

Él siempre hacía referencia de La pulpería por la gran experiencia que vivió allí, y todo lo que aprendió. Así que La pulperia era un nombre muy escuchado en mi casa, así que cuando leí La gran pulpería de libros me emocioné porque además mi papá siempre tuvo unas grandes bibliotecas, era un gran amante de los libros. De repente esa pulpería del libro me conectó con mi papá, inclusive pensé en llevar allá varios de los libros que tenemos destinados para donar, sin embargo, debido a la enorme cantidad de libros que se encuentran en la librería (cerca de 3.000.000 ejemplares) ya prácticamente no aceptan donaciones, a menos que se trate de algún ejemplar muy especial.

Hace unos pocos días yo venía por Sabana Grande y recordé que la librería está ubicada en Chacaíto, así que decidí ir a visitarla.
Cuando uno entra ahí es algo mágico, especial, no podía creer que me encontraba dentro de La pulpería. Al entrar está el sr. Rómulo, un señor muy amable quien es hijo del Fundador de "La gran pulpería de libros" , el sr. Rafael Ramón Castellanos, quien empezó con ésta gran iniciativa el año 1981 en el Pasaje Zingg en el centro Caracas, y luego del fallecimiento de su padre, el año 2019, su hijo decidió continuar con su legado, y ahí está firme cuidando y atendiendo la librería.
Uno empieza a bajar y a adentrarse en esos largos e interminables pasillos llenos de libros muy organizados por tema, y los libros se pierden en los angostos pasillos, también tienen algunas curiosidades, botellas, viejos frascos de perfumes, cuadros. Tienen una pequeña salita donde te sientas y no te provoca salir de ahí.

¿Cuánta historia se encuentra guardada ahí, por cuántas manos pasaron esos 3.000 libros que aún esperan continuar el camino? ¿Cuántos autores se reencontraron y se conocieron en esos pasillos?
Vale la pena darse más de una vuelta por allá.

Pulpería se le llamaba pulpería a un centro de abastecimiento de 
distintos objetos, medicinas, herramientas, alimentos; también se le 
llamaba así a un lugar donde se podía socializar para conversar sobre 
acontecimientos cotidianos, políticos, chismes, etc.

Recently while I was looking at some things on Instagram something that said La pulpería caught my attention, I immediately searched and it was The great pulperia of books and I was delighted with the name. Now I tell you why.

My dad when he was about 7 years old started working in a pulpería that his godfather Luis had in Ciudad Bolivar, he spent several years there. He became so responsible in his work that his godfather would go on the "vapores" (steamships) to make the big purchases and leave my dad in charge of the pulpería, so much so that my dad even went to the port when the cargo arrived and he was the one who selected and made the purchase of the merchandise. In that store he would meet with great friends and they would improvise plays, he could already glimpse his future? My dad was a great playwright, theater director, professor and National Theater Award in 1995.

He always made reference to La pulperia because of the great experience he lived there, and everything he learned. So La pulperia was a name I heard a lot in my house, so when I read The great pulperia of books I got excited because my dad always had a big library, he was a great book lover. Suddenly that pulpería del libro connected me with my dad, I even thought of taking there several of the books that we have destined to donate, however, due to the enormous amount of books that are in the pulpería (about 3.000.000 copies) they practically do not accept donations anymore, unless it is a very special copy.

A few days ago I was coming through Sabana Grande and remembered that the bookstore is located in Chacaíto, so I decided to visit it.
When one enters there is something magical, special, I could not believe I was inside La pulpería. When you enter there is Mr. Rómulo, a very kind man who is the son of the founder of "The great pulperia of books", Mr. Rafael Ramón Castellanos, who started this great initiative in 1981 in Pasaje Zingg in downtown Caracas, and after the death of his father, in 2019, his son decided to continue with his legacy, and there he is firmly taking care of the bookstore.
You start to go down and get into those long and endless aisles full of books very organized by theme, and the books get lost in the narrow aisles, they also have some curiosities, bottles, old perfume bottles, paintings. They have a small room where you sit down and don't want to leave.

How much history is stored there, how many hands have passed through those 3,000 books that are still waiting to continue their journey? How many authors met and got to know each other in those corridors?
It is worthwhile to take more than one walk there.
