Visiting the Fruska gora monasteries in Serbia - Novo Hopovo monastery

in Worldmappinlast year

When we continued our journey towards the monasteries of Fruska Gora, the next monastery on our way was the Novo Hopovo monastery.

This monastery is a real historical treasure of this area and the whole Serbia. The monastery dates back to the 15th century, and the present church was built in the 16th century.

It is interesting that it did not only have a religious purpose in the past, but was also a place where people were educated and learned to read and write. All those who wanted to become literate gathered here.

This place was something like a cultural center. But during the war history it was damaged many times and unfortunately many books and old manuscripts that were kept there were destroyed.

Because of its educational history, this monastery is much more than just a monastery. You can't help but admire its architecture and great historical value.

At the very entrance, there are domestic products such as honey with pollen powder and several types of Serbian brandy called "rakija", such as juniper brandy, quince brandy, etc. The products are displayed without a salesperson, and thus the visitors are shown the confidence that after taking these products, they will go to the church and pay for them there.

The bell tower of this church was built later, in the 18th century. The monastery quarters were in the past home to many who needed a home.

Let's take a peek inside.

There is an artistic treasure of well-preserved fresco painting. The frescoes of this monastery are its greatest value and proof that this was not only a place that gathered religious people, but also a place of art and culture.

It is a temple that deserves admiration and respect, and with such feelings I left it and headed further along the trail of history.

What a beautiful place and what beautiful photos you were able to take, I loved them all. I would have taken so many pictures from different angles because of how beautiful everything looks.

Thanks for sharing them here with us, greetings!

Thank you, I tried to take photos to convey the beauty of this place and I'm glad if I succeeded. I was impressed by the architecture but also by the nature around. Greetings 🤗

Most of the churches from the past used to have a different purpose rather than a religious place. I was surprised too but that also the case in my country where they served more as fortresses or people where to hide in case of a war.

Yes, in my country there are many such churches that only later started to have only a religious purpose, and in the past this was not the case. Thank you for stopping by.🤗

How impressive the chandelier inside caught my attention and I like how the architecture of the monastery is preserved inside and out.

Yes, the chandelier is beautiful indeed... I love such historical places and I always bring back good impressions.

This Novo Hopovo monastery reminds me of the monasteries we have here in Romania in the Bucovina area, some spectacular monasteries.
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful place with us.
