Visiting the Fruska gora monasteries in Serbia - Velika Remeta monastery

in Pinmapple7 months ago

One of the most beautiful monasteries on the Fruska gora mountain that I visited last Saturday is Velika Remeta monastery, located in a beautiful natural forest environment.

It is another oasis of peace like every monastery we visited that day, but Velika Remeta is special because it is one of the oldest monasteries on the Fruska Gora. There are unofficial data that testify that the monastery was built in the 13th century, but according to official data it dates from the 15th century, although it is not completely certain.

At the end of the road that leads to the monastery, there is a gate behind which extends the monastery property and a beautiful park called "paradise park". We will walk through the park later, but first I will take you to the monastery.

I went inside with my son. He also likes, like me, to visit historical places and is very curious about what is behind the door every time we pass through it.

I teach him to respect these places, so I remind him every time that when we go inside we must be quiet and polite and then we go on a tour to see the surroundings.

The courtyard of the monastery is neat and tidy. You feel very comfortable and welcome there.

The church is old and quite authentic, and that is its greatest value. It is dedicated to Saint Demetrius.

We were fascinated when we saw the bell tower because it is quite tall.

IMG_20231014_115215.jpg

The door was open so we went inside.

Sometimes I feel uncomfortable taking photos of the interior of the church, but on the other hand, I want to present its imposing frescoes and evoke its ambience with photos.

In some monasteries I don't feel uncomfortable taking photos and I don't know what it depends on, but in this monastery I only took a few photos.

Velika Remeta Monastery had a turbulent history. It is known that during the Second World War, soldiers of the opposing army stayed in it, and after leaving, they looted it and partly set it on fire. There were many difficult moments, but it was preserved despite all the challenges during the wartime past.

Thanks to the abbot of the monastery, the so-called "paradise park" that I mentioned was created. He made it so that people would come to this place, which is worth visiting and staying in.

The park is isolated from noise and is full of greenery, so you have the feeling that you are truly in paradise.

There is also a waterfall and stairs that lead you to the top of the hill with beautiful views.

Children from a school had an organized visit that day, so it was more lively than usual.

My son felt free there and ran around, as did my daughter who woke up in the meantime and joined us.

There were a lot of walnuts. My children collected them from the ground and then we broke them with a stone and ate them. They were delicious.

My children were also delighted with the old wooden houses that could also be seen in the park.

It was a very exciting experience for them to peek inside.

We had a great time, and put this place on the list of weekend destinations that we will visit again in the future.

Thank you very much for reading.

The images and writing are original and mine.

Greetings!

I thought monasteries are only for Buddhist monks.. But this looks like a Catholic place hehe.. Such a big one

Yes, it is a very big monastery, and I was most impressed by the green expanse around it... It's not Catholic, it's Orthodox. Orthodox Christianity is the dominant religion in Serbia.

I've never been to these parts of Europe, but it sure looks very appealing! The pictures are so crisp and colorful!

Thank you. I'm glad you found it interesting. Serbia is full of interesting sights, worth visiting. 😊

One day I'll go :)

Thanks a lot @livinguktaiwan 🤗 It's my pleasure.

Oh wow! I hoped it wouldn't end. How I love buildings that stand the test of time.

I'm Catholic so you may understand how much more meaning these images may have for me. I've never been to a Monastry but I hope to visit one in the future.

Well done. 😊

Thank you so much. 🤗 I am also fascinated by buildings that last for centuries and preserve their past and are still there, in our present. This is not a Catholic monastery, it is an Orthodox one, but it is Christian.

Oh, my bad. Thanks. Still a sight to behold. 😊✌🏾

That is a really beautiful monastery for sure! Both on the inside and on the outside ❤️

I did a tour on the Fruska gora mountain and visited several monasteries and they are all unique in their own way, I don't know which one is more beautiful... They are really worth a visit.

Hello, top photographs 📸 Thanks for sharing 🙂

I am glad you liked it, thanks🤗

What a beautiful monastery! I love orthodox sacral constructions.. the paintings on the wall are so full of color. We don't have anything like that in Catholic churches.

Was it possible to go to the tower too?

This is one of the most picturesque and colorful monasteries I've been to when it comes to its interior and fresco painting. I also liked the surroundings, the nature is beautiful.

I didn't ask if we could enter the tower, but I don't think anyone except monks is allowed to enter. Thank you so much for stopping by.🤗
