Camping at the Amalfi coast

in Pinmapplelast month

Hello. My name is Jan and I would like to share with you an outstanding spot, pals.

Let me briefly introduce you what me and my partner do. We travel low-cost around Italy. We have been cycling together since March of this year carrying all the necessities on our bikes. The necessities include a sleeping bag, a mat (in our case sheep skins), a tent, few pieces of clothes, natural treatments (essential oil, tincture, cream), a first-aid kit, a bike-repairing kit, cooking utensils and equipment, water bottles and then very specific necessities which is a tea set and teas for me, carving tools for her and music instruments for both of us 😄

Back to the main topic of this post. A lot of superlatives had been told us about the beauty of the Amalfi coast before we set out on the journey and before we reached it. “It’s THE must-seen area in Italy,” recommended travellers, locals, Italians in general. And as it is a famous and popular tourist area, it is very expensive and overcrowded as well. Bearing all the pros and cons on our mind, we decided to ride our bikes there. We managed to overcome one of the disadvantages (crowds of people) by the fact of arriving in April. The high season starts later.

There was one question remaining still. Where will we sleep? The terrain of the coast is very steep and the suitable spots for wildcamping are occupied by buildings.

We didn’t want to rent a room in a hotel, a hostel or an airb’n’b because of the prices, only as the very last choice. As the twilight was coming near and near we were concerned more and more about it. At one moment, we spotted a decent place - in our eyes - where to put our tent on someone’s property. We rang the bell and asked the owner after explaining our situation. He didn’t agree with our proposal as he considered the spot as inappropriate. He and his wife give us a piece of advice. They recommended us a public, communal beach which is situated nearby and which is scarcely visited by tourists. We accepted their advice and rode our bikes to the entrance of the lido di Ravello [//]:# (!pinmapple 40.63697 lat 14.61095 long d3scr)

The place is accessible through few staircases. Carrying our bikes and bags downstairs after the whole day of biking was a tough challenge.

What we found surprised us neatly a lot! The spot was flat, without high grass or concrete floor, just right above the beach. It was equipped even with showers. They worked and the water was sweet. We were enormously happy! What a bliss to take a bath in the sea and then take a shower!

When we arrived only three local people were enjoying the whole space, swimming or walking a dog. We set up the tent with an amazing view on the nearby village called Atrani, on imposing cliffs, on the lovely sunset and the vast sea.

The night was calm. No one appeared and disturbed us. Only the cars passing by up on the road could be heard from time to time. We woke up into the sunlit morning and continued on our journey. I highly recommend this spot where you can camp for free and basic needs are met.

Above all, the town of Amalfi can be reached in a minute. [//]:# (!pinmapple 40.63441 lat 14.60302 long d3scr)
