Hello fellow Hive travellers! I'm finaĺly continuing my blog on my home-for-the-moment in Morelia, Michoacàn in Mexico. You can see part 1 here ⬇️
https://peakd.com/cross-post/@katou.kanga/morelia-michoacan-mexico-part-1
Morelia which is the capital of the state of Michoacàn, was founded in 1541 under the city name of Valladolid by the Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza. It is located in the Guayangareo Valley at an altitude of more than 1900 meters surrounded by the Sierra Madre Occidentale. It was renamed Morelia in honor of José María Morelos y Pavón in 1828 and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991 because of the well preserved colonial architecture, a center beautifully built with cobble stones and over 200 historical buildings in pink quarry stone, mixing Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical architecture.
The main cathedral originally called Cathedral of the Divine Savior of Morelia, which engolfs the city center, sets the stage for an architectural delight of the eyes😍
I had to go downtown several times in order to photograph the inside as well. There's so much beauty and it does get really hot in September and October, I needed a little bit of time to catch my breath.
I absolutely love the sharp purple flowers you find everywhere here!
I, of course, decided to go inside this incredible monument and was further astounded by the majestic beauty of it.
I finally got to the back where the German 4600 pipe organ was displayed.
And the confession booth on my way out to the other side. Forgive me father for I have sinned...
Then went out on the South side to find some beautiful trees, doors, and arches.
And ending with this spectacular tree right before heading out the gate. I have to admit, I loved climbing trees when I was young and was sorely tempted🤣😅
Now I finally left the Cathedral and decided to go through the Plaza de Armas.
Then I went through Plaza Melchor Ocampo which is where they often have markets.
I absolutely love the cafés and restaurants on the rooftops here!🤩 Would've loved to have been a student here. And in the second pic here we see the decorative balls hung in the air that light up at night. That will have to wait till I get downtown at night😅
In the next one we see a beer pong sign...right across the Cathedral lol😝 Wonder if a pong is like a bong😅
A side street going down away from the city center shows how the city center is raised up above the rest of Morelia on both North and South sides. Then on the outskirts the Sierras rise up.
The next two we're heading toward the long mall of restaurants that goes for two blocks.
And saying a hasta luego to this incredible towering Cathedral.
Already tired from searching el Correo de Mexico Central (the post office) for an hour. The main street is so long and with not many signs to indicate what is what, I'd gone back and forth 20 times walking right in front of it🤣🤣🤣 I decided to take a little tour on the North side of the center before heading to my West side room. I snapped some shots of the Morelia sign all decorated for the Ciné Festival. The first pic I took a month ago the first time I came down. Then the latter is during the festival.
So heading out I turned in to see and hear the tales told to children of the history of la Día de Muertos or Day of the Dead, a very popular celebration on November 2nd paying hommage to Mexicans' family members that had passed away, as well as ancestors. This was at Jardín de las Rosas where there are bars and cafés.
Taking a last pics on my way home, I went by the Central Clavijero, then the Mercado de Dulces y Artisanías...or the Artisanal and Candy Market!😋 And lastly a church.
I then waved adios to the Centro Historico for a little while while I walked 30 minutes back to where I'm staying. My eyes, heart, and soul happy to have beheld this absolutely lovely architectural haven.
Thank you for visiting, upvoting, and giving love to my blog💞💞
