🔥The land of fire and ice❄️

I keep saying this: Iceland is like another planet. It's incredible nature is out of this world! Never in my life have I seen so many fascinating places. This country has it ALL: volcanoes, icebergs, waterfalls, geysirs, hot springs, lava fields, black sand beaches, stunning mountains and amazing aurora borealis!

Day 1

After not traveling anywhere abroad for couple of months I was surfing on Internet hoping to find some cheap flight tickets to anywhere. I came across a return ticket from Budapest to Reykjavik for 150 euros. When I told my boyfriend Denis and our friend Emanuel about this, they were very excited about the idea to visit Iceland. In a couple of days we decided to go so we bought the tickets. All we had to do is make a plan and buy everything necessary for the trip.

Considering none of us had a lot of money to spend, we made a low budget plan. Iceland is one of the most expensive countries in the world so hotels/hostels and restaurants were not part of the plan. That was fine with us because we are used to sleeping in wierd places and cooking our own food. We slept in a car which saved us a lot of money. We packed some winter clothes (it's very important that you bring waterproof and windproof clothes), good pair of shoes, sleeping bags, cameras and cooking equipment.

Also, when travelling to Iceland I recommend renting a car, otherwise you will be stuck in one place and miss all the beauty. We rented the cheepest four-wheel drive car and were ready to go!

I still remember the feeling when our plane came above Iceland. I was overly excited because it was my first flight and I've never seen anything like that before. The view was exactly how I imagined it to be. Like the name itself, it's the land of ice and from up above, everything looked frozen.

When we landed, we didn't have any exact plan where to go, so first things first, we went shopping to buy some food. Buying food in supermarkets is the best option if you want to save money as much as possible.

Fully loaded, we got snacks and supplies...

I swear this thing was the best.

Since we brought our cooking equipment, everyday we bought food at markets and cook for ourselves. It was a bit challenging due to the wind blowing and not having any walls or anything to protect the flame from extinguishing. But, somehow we managed to cook a decent meal everyday.

We found this black lava salt at the market and it was the best and most interesting salt I ever tasted.

So the first day was not planned, we just decided to go south. While driving, we were amazed by all the beauty around us. The land was covered with moss, there was steam coming everywhere from the ground and snowy mountains laid in the distance. We felt so blessed and couldn't wait to explore this amazing country. In the link below you can see how it all looked when we started driving.

Driving in Iceland

Honestly I don't know where we ended, but it was one hill we saw and wanted to climb. We followed some road and accidentally entered on golf terrain. 😅 We immediately realized where we came and stopped our car. Some guy was approaching us and he just started yelling and taking photos of our car's license plate. We apologized, but he didn't listen at all. We were so sorry and kept saying that to him. Eventually, we moved our car from the terrain and forgot all about it.

In Iceland, there are many openings on the ground that emit sulfurous gases that have an unpleasing smell (imagine the smell of rotten eggs 😝).

We climbed the hill and with every step the view was more and more incredible.

We noticed that a lot of areas in Iceland are covered with moss as you can see in a pic below.

Iceland was the country I have always wanted to visit and I am so grateful and happy that we had the opportunity to be there and experience all the beauty it offers. If you ever have the opportunity to go there please do, especially if you love nature and less crowded places (there are only around 300 000 people in Iceland and one third is located in Reykjavik). When you are out there, believe me that everywhere you look the nature is so unrealistic and fascinating, it feels like you are not on planet Earth.

Hope you enjoyed this post. Have a great day! 😊

Ah no, Aioli?! Damn I like garlic, I like mayonnaise but the two together... nooooo! Haha! But I would probably have aioli over the smell of sulphur dioxide 😃

I am going to have to visit Iceland once they allow us to travel outside the UK, it's a place I'd love to visit, especially to hike and see the aurora borealis!

Awesome journey and thanks for sharing!

Haha we liked Aioli a lot, de gustibus non est disputandum! 😋

Yeah, I hope you'll visit Iceland someday, fingers crossed!

Thank YOU!

Wow thats some adventure you guys had, My eyes are fixated on that Truffle Aioli and lava salt LOL.

Yes, when roadtriping, every day feels like an adventure.
I regret not buying more salt for home It's really tasty and Aioli was really great, we ate that with every dish. 😄

Sounds and looks brutal! I have to visit Iceland some day. Also the idea of sleeping in the car to spend some money sounds adventureous and cool to be honest! It's beautiful seeing how you enjoyed the trip ☺️

Thank you my friend! 😊 I hope you'll visit Iceland one day, it's really special. Yes, sleeping in the car was a bit challenging, but we didn't care at all, we were just too excited to be there!

This is genuinely how you blog. It seems like you don't have a problem with how you wanted to tell your story the way you want. I've enjoyed reading it and felt a bit jealous to hear you guys having the freedom to go wherever you want. In my case, I don't have that freedom yet. But one day, when that time comes, I wish to share my travelling experiences as well.

Guess, I'll be anticipating the next blog. ^^

Thank you! I'm sure you will have the freedom to do what you want. Just go with the flow and everything will fall into place. 😊

I hope so. For now, I'll have to endure struggles. You may have a clue about them on my second blogging challenge.

I have always wanted to visit Iceland but it seems so expensive to me. But your post gives me some hope to visit this beautiful country. Waiting for the next one.

Yeah, it is expensive, but if you sleep in a car and buy food at supermarkets you could save a lot of money!
We posted day 2 so you can check it out. :)

Also, that's your hotel!

They have Stonewall Kitchen in Iceland!? That's wild! I've always seen that where I live but I thought they were a much smaller brand; certainly not international, if even national. That stuff is amazing!

Great post, and great photos. It looks like a truly beautiful place. I'm excited to see more! And LOL about the golf course 😂

Haha yeah, the cheapest hotel in Iceland. 😅

We would have loved to stay in a great hotel, but as students we didn't have much money to spare. Also, it's just sleeping through the night, we don't need a hotel for that.

Yeah we liked very much truffle aioli so when we came back home I had to learn how to make it.

Thank you so much! We just posted day 2 if you want to check it out :)

I've never tried but it sounds expensive to make.. I don't know a ton about truffles other than the cost. I doubt I'll ever buy them! But these bulk-made ones, like Stonewall, are delicious and affordable :)

Ehh fuck a hotel! I've almost exclusively lived out of cars while traveling. Sure, a hotel would be nice, but then you're pretty much missing out on all the fun shit you could be doing if you put that money elsewhere. I am looking forward to looking at your day 2!

We once bought I think it was a mixture of truffles and other mushrooms so it wasn't that expensive. And we made Aioli, it was very tasty :)

Exactly that! I couldn't agree more. When you get out of your comfort zone you can sleep anywhere and it's way more interesting and adventurous. If we had stayed in a hotel, we wouldn't see half of the staff we did! Thank you so much, you seem like a really cool and nice guy :)
