After having done a massive trek to the Celeste Lagoon a few days ago, I had the possibility to meet a lot of new people. Socialising is something I love to do, so this Couchsurfing event gave me the chance to do just that. That day I met a girl who ended up being my friend until now and with whom, during my stay in Ushuaia, we shared many walks. She also ended up being the designated driver of the small group that we formed later, since analysing all the expenses we had in Uber, we found that it was more convenient to move around with a rented car.

Naty is a girl who works remotely for a bank and had the idea of renting a flat for the three months of the summer in Ushuaia. We met on the trekking to Celeste Lagoon, and a few days later we got in touch, as I was interested in having some more stable friends. I liked socialising with tourists, but I also wanted to be with people with longer stays so that I wouldn't have to introduce myself from scratch every time.

Because of her job, she only had weekends off, so the Saturday after the crowded trek, we decided to hike to the Beban Waterfall. This waterfall is not so touristy, but Naty, like me, had already been in Ushuaia for a long time and knew all the most famous spots. I hadn't been to this waterfall either, so I didn't hesitate to join the plan. All in all, it would be a trek of 8 kilometres round trip: not that long but still an interesting distance.

The trail to the Beban Waterfall starts at the Carbajal Viewpoint, 16 kilometres from the city of Ushuaia. This trail is shared with another one that takes you to the Laguna Ceniza, a little further than there. The exact path to the waterfall is part of a 3 day trek through the mountains of Ushuaia to a super remote place called Paso Valdivieso. Unfortunately I missed this long walk, but at least I was going to see the first part of it.

To get to this place, we had to take an Uber as there is no public transport to take us to this area. This transfer cost us $20 one way and $20 return, which I thought was a bit high as we were only two people, so we had to pay for a whole trip each. We didn't find any other companions that day and we didn't want to waste the day, so we decided to pay the cost.

In itself this trek did not present any technical difficulties: most of the way was flat and well signposted. After passing the turnoff to the Laguna Ceniza, we came to a part where there was another turnoff that took you to a mountain hut, but which joined the main trail further on. At the refuge we found ourselves camping with the only person we saw on the whole trail, who mistakenly pointed us in the wrong direction. We got into the middle of the mob and got our feet wet, but it was too late to turn back 😂.

After getting out of the swamp, we found the main road and a few minutes later we finally reached the waterfall. Luckily, it was signposted, otherwise we would have mistaken it for any ordinary river. I had not seen any pictures of this place and was expecting to see a waterfall like the ones I had seen before, but this was not the case with the Beban Waterfall.

This waterfall was formed by the unevenness of a river, and fell through a series of stones that gave it its characteristic waterfall. The path approached you along the upper part of the river, so if you wanted to see the waterfall from the front, you had to walk along it and down a little. This is what Naty and I did to find a good place to have lunch, and we stayed there for a while. Neither of us found the waterfall that amazing, but at least the walk to it was worth it.

As with all trekking in Ushuaia, after only half an hour of inactivity the freezing cold is already being felt, so we set up camp a bit quickly and decided to move around a bit so as not to freeze. On the way back, we found the original access path, and it was a perfect wooden walkway. If that camper hadn't misdirected us, we would have avoided the peat and perhaps kept our feet dry.

As we return we take the other path of the detour, almost arriving at the exit of the path we come across a large beaver plantation. These animal constructions were already a common sight on Ushuaia's trails, but this particular one was much larger than the ones we had seen before. It also had a long and tidy wall, where a pond was formed, perfect for keeping the burrow of these little destroyers of the ecosystem.

We were also able to see at close quarters the effect beavers have on the surrounding trees, as well as the marks they leave with their teeth. These animals use the trees to build their dams and also to feed themselves. The forests of Ushuaia are full of beaver colonies like these, which started to form 80 years ago after the artificial introduction of these little ones. It is clear that they did not know the environmental impact they would bring with them.

On our way back, Naty and I got to thinking that we spent $40 on Uber just to get to and from this trail. This was a bit steep compared to the cost of renting a car for $50 a day, which would certainly allow us to see more places. This was the basis for renting a car for most of the weekends that followed this day, and for the same money we used to go to the waterfall, we went much further into Tierra del Fuego. Luckily she knew how to drive very well, because if it was up to me we wouldn't even make it so far 😂.

This trek in total took us about 4 hours because it was not that far and not that difficult, so we did it quickly. We both concluded that the waterfall was not that special, but the surrounding scenery was worth the walk. Surely the trip to Paso Valdivieso would have been amazing, but I'll keep that in mind for a future trip to Ushuaia. For the moment I was satisfied with having seen the waterfall, and because it made us realise how much it was worth renting a car: we lived many other adventures thanks to it 😃.

Ushuaia seems full of surprises, good and not-so-spectacular ones 😂 Still, your vibe and the way you connect with people is so inspiring. More local experiences and those small details, please!
Hello dear friend @lauramica, good morning
The good thing about being a sociable person is what you mentioned: you have the opportunity to meet people who later become friends.
It's great that you met Naty and that you were able to see less touristy places like this beautiful waterfall.
It's a shame that the only person you met along the way couldn't guide you, and you had to make this whole journey; how clever.
It's impressive that you found this beaver dam. These animals are incredible at what they do. You can't believe the power they have to knock down large trees.
Another beautiful adventure experienced in the company of a new friend. Thank you so much for sharing.
Have a great day; enjoy your first day of work.
You shared your wonderful trip while in Ushuaia. I was very happy to know and see that the city of Argentina has beautiful mountains and forests. It is fun to drive around in this amazing rented vehicle with a driver. There is a chance to see a lot from the car. Thank you very much for sharing this beautiful and unforgettable experience of the city of Argentina with its mountains and forests. This special trip has given us all the pleasure of seeing and enjoying beautiful places and natural scenery.
Best regards @mdakash62

Wow!
You have the gift of making me jealous. Jokes aside: two things I love are trails and places with water, especially waterfalls.
The places you visit are amazing!

The journey to the mountains looks very beautiful my friend, I am very interested in seeing those mountains🤗😘
Semoga harimu menyenangkan temanku 😘
That waterfall is quite beautiful😍
In our city too, the business of renting out houses is doing quite well at this time and people work hard all their lives and build houses and rent them out and then this makes their life much easier. This place, the natural scenery, everything is much more beautiful.
Wow! It's an incredible place where nature truly shines. The water tumbling over the rocks creates that misty, refreshing atmosphere that instantly brings a sense of calm.
This is a great reminder that even when a destination isn't amazing, the journey can still be worthwhile ✨ The scenery on the way to Beban Waterfall is lovely and those beaver dams are always fascinating to see 💖
