Argentina - The $10 trek in Cafayate, Salta province: a guided walk to the Colorado River Waterfalls. / El trekking de $10 en Cafayate, provincia de Salta: paseo guiado hasta las Cascadas del Río Colorado. 😃❤️

Paying for trekking is something I don't like so much because I know that this country is so big that it has a lot of nice places to go for free, but I also don't refuse to do it if it's a place I want to see and it can't be any other way. In all this long time travelling I have rarely paid for trekking or for a mountain guide, so having to do it only a few times doesn't seem bad to me. One of the recommended hikes in the town of Cafayate is the one that allows you to see the Rio Colorado Waterfalls, which are located on private land, so to see them you have to invest in an entrance ticket 😅.

Pagar por hacer trekking es algo que no me gusta tanto porque sé que este país es tan grande que tiene un montón de lugares lindos para ir gratis, pero tampoco me rehuso a hacerlo si se trata de un lugar que quiero conocer y que no puede ser de otro modo. En todo este largo tiempo viajando pocas veces pagué para hacer un trekking o por un guía de montaña, así que tener que hacerlo solo unas pocas veces no me parece mal. Una de las caminatas recomendadas en el pueblo de Cafayate es aquella que te permite conocer las Cascadas del Río Colorado, las cuales se encuentran en un terreno privado, por lo que para verlas hay que invertir en un ticket de acceso 😅.

There is much debate as to whether or not it is appropriate to have to pay a ticket to access this part of the village, as some say that natural beauty that attracts tourism that benefits everyone should not be privatised for the benefit of a few. However, there are indigenous peoples who claim that these lands belong to them and that they can do with them what they want. Anyway, my thought at the time was that I didn't want to leave town without seeing this place, so I paid the $10 entrance fee without complaining. After all, it was almost the end of my stay there and it was within my budget to pay for it 😅.

Hay muchos debates sobre si corresponde o no tener que pagar un ticket de acceso a esta parte del pueblo, ya que hay quienes dicen que las bellezas naturales que atraen al turismo que benefician a todos no deberían privatizarse para beneficio de unos pocos. Sin embargo, hay pueblos originarios que reclaman que estas tierras les pertenecen y que pueden hacer con ellas lo que quieran. Como sea, mi pensamiento en ese momento fue que no quería irme del pueblo sin conocer este lugar así que pagué sin quejarme los $10 que te pedían para poder ingresar. Después de todo, ya casi era el final de mi estadía ahí y estaba dentro de mi presupuesto pagar por eso 😅.

With the entrance ticket you had the right to use the chemical toilets at the entrance, there was also a drinking water point and a small fair with handicrafts and food for sale. In addition, there was a person who accompanied you all the way to the waterfalls. I'm not sure if this person was a mountain guide exactly, but at least he knew the place well and was friendly. As I didn't want to go alone, I took advantage of the fact that a guest at the hostel didn't have plans for the day and we arranged to do this walk together and share the taxi fare to the waterfalls, which was about $6 😃.

Con ese ticket de acceso tenías derecho al uso de unos baños químicos en la entrada, también había una toma de agua potable y una pequeña feria de artesanías y de venta de comida. Además, había una persona que te acompañaba durante todo el recorrido hasta las cascadas. No estoy segura de que esa persona fuera un guía de montaña exactamente, pero al menos conocía bien el lugar y fue amable. Como no quería ir sola, aproveché que un huésped en el hostel no tenía planes para ese día y organizamos para hacer juntos este paseo y compartir el precio del taxi hasta ahí que fue de unos $6 😀.

The route was a walk in pursuit of the Colorado River, crossing it a few times back and forth. There were no marked trails anywhere or markers to let you know which way to go, so I think without that person who accompanied us it would have been difficult to get there. The day was really hot and we took advantage of the stops at the small waterfalls to cool our heads and hydrate a bit. I had already forgotten how sticky it is to trek in hot weather: I definitely prefer mountaineering in Patagonia 😅.

El recorrido se trataba de un paseo en el que se persigue al Río Colorado, cruzándolo unas cuantas veces hacia un lado y otro. No había ningún sendero marcado en ninguna parte o marcas que te permitan saber hacia donde ir, por lo que creo que sin esa persona que nos acompañó hubiese sido difícil llegar. El día estaba realmente caluroso y aprovechabamos las paradas en las pequeñas cascadas para refrescarnos la cabeza e hidratarnos un poco. Ya me había olvidado de lo pegajoso que es hacer trekking en climas calurosos: definitivamente prefiero el montañismo en la Patagonia 😅.

During the tour, which lasted about an hour and a half, we did not see any large waterfalls, but rather small waterfalls. The place was beautiful, but it was not one of the most incredible I have ever seen. Our walk ended at the highest waterfall of all, a waterfall of perhaps 15 metres. It was also pretty and the splashing water was good for cooling off. We stayed there for a while having our lunch and chatting among the three of us, until we left. To make the walk a little more enjoyable, we climbed up to the waterfall level and returned by a different route to the one we had taken on the way out. I like this so that we don't always have to see the same scenery on the way there and back ❣️.

Durante el recorrido que duró algo de una hora y media no vimos grandes cascadas, sino más bien pequeños saltos de agua. El lugar era hermoso, pero tampoco fue de los más increíbles que vi. Nuestro caminó finalizó en la cascada más altas de todas, un salto de unos 15 metros quizás. También era linda y el agua que salpicaba servía para refrescarnos. Nos quedamos un buen rato ahí teniendo nuestro almuerzo y charlando entre los tres, hasta que nos fuimos. Para hacer el camino un poco más entretenido, subimos al nivel de la cascada y volvimos por un camino distinto al de ida. Esto me gusta para no tener que ver siempre los mismos paisajes de ida y vuelta ❣️.

Beyond all the dilemmas about whether it is worth paying for access to these natural landscapes, at the end of the day it didn't seem so bad to have to do so as one person accompanied us during the afternoon and will probably be paid for it with the money collected from our entrance fees. I quite enjoyed this trek despite the heat and all, because we were able to get to a nice spot to have our lunch. This was my last afternoon in Cafayate and I was glad to have enjoyed it in the best way: I have many beautiful memories of this place and this is one more of them ❤️.

Más allá de todos los dilemas sobre si vale la pena pagar por acceder a estos paisajes naturales, al final del día no me pareció tan malo tener que hacerlo ya que una persona nos acompañó durante la tarde y seguramente le paguen por eso con el dinero recaudado de nuestras entradas. Disfruté bastante de este trekking a pesar del calor y todo, porque pudimos llegar a un lindo punto para tener nuestro almuerzo. Esta fue mi última tarde en Cafayate y me alegré por haberla disfrutado de la mejor manera: tengo muchos recuerdos hermosos de este lugar y este es uno más de ellos ❤️.
