Argentina - The short trek that turned into a full day's walk: 15 kilometres to the Los Amigos Waterfall. / El trekking corto que se transformó en todo el día caminando: 15 kilómetros hasta la Cascada de Los Amigos. 😃❤️

In the surroundings of Ushuaia it is possible to find different trails and trekking for all tastes. If you like the mountains, you can enjoy short hikes of less than an hour or long treks that last for more than three nights. In any case, it is always necessary to get information about the trail before starting it, to avoid surprises. On one of my days off I had decided to do one of the many ‘short’ hikes, but it was precisely the lack of information that made me walk too much. However, I don't regret it because exercise is exercise 😅.

En los alrededores de Ushuaia es posible encontrar distintos senderos y trekkings para todos los gustos. Si te gusta la montaña, podes disfrutarla en caminatas cortas de menos de una hora o en largos recorridos que se extienden durante más de tres noches. Como sea, siempre es necesario informarte sobre la senda a realizar antes de empezarla, para no llevarte sorpresas. En uno de mis días libres había decido hacer una de las tantas caminatas "cortas", pero justamente la falta de información fue la que me hizo caminar de más. Igualmente no me arrepiento porque ejercicio es ejercicio 😅.

One thing I liked about being able to exchange work for accommodation in Ushuaia again was that my shift was as a receptionist at night. This meant that I had all the free time to do whatever I wanted. But as my shift ended at almost midnight, it was a bit difficult to start my day early the next day. On the days when I was a bit lazier, I would choose walks that didn't take so long to make the most of the day 😃.

Algo que me gustó de haber vuelto a intercambiar trabajo por alojamiento en Ushuaia fue que mi turno fue de recepcionista en la noche. Esto significaba que tenía todo el tiempo libre para hacer lo que quisiera. Pero como mi turno terminaba casi en la medianoche, al otro día me costaba un poco empezar mi día temprano. En los días que tenía un poco más de pereza, elegía caminatas que no me llevaran tanto tiempo como para aprovechar el día 😃.

One of them was the one to the Los Amigos Waterfall, which I had read on the internet was only about 5 kilometres round trip. With all the walking I do, this seemed very little, so I decided it would be a good idea to walk from the hostel. I knew roughly how far I had to go: the trail started on the way to the Arakur Hotel that I had visited a few days before. As the trek itself was short, I thought I had enough energy for some extra walking and at the same time I could get to know the city a bit better to the north 😃.

Una de ellas era aquella hasta la Cascada de Los Amigos, que había leido en internet que solo eran unos 5 kilómetros ida y vuelta. Con todo lo que yo camino, esto me parecía muy poco, así que decidí que seria buena idea ir caminando desde el hostel. Sabía masomenos hasta donde tenía que ir: la senda empezaba en el camino al Hotel Arakur que había visitado unos días atrás. Como el trekking en sí era corto, según yo me sobraba energía para algo de caminata extra y de paso conocía un poco más detenidamente la ciudad hacia su lado norte 😃.

However, it took me almost two hours to get to the trailhead alone. In my mind, this place wasn't that far, but in reality it was (spoiler: when I checked the map, it was only 8 kilometres from the hostel to the start). This made me a bit tired, but I had just started what I was going to do, so I took a breath of fresh air and continued on my way 😃.

Sin embargo, llegar solo hasta el inicio del sendero me tomó casi dos horas. En mi mente, este lugar no estaba tan lejos, pero en la realidad si (spoiler: cuando chequeé el mapa, solo desde el hostel al inicio habían 8 kilómetros). Esto me hizo llegar un poco cansada pero recién empezaba lo que yo fui a hacer, así que tomé un poco de aire y seguí el camino 😃.

I must have walked about two kilometres more when I finally reached the sign indicating the turn-off to the waterfall. It was only from that point that the path was 5 kilometres round trip, and not from the road as I thought it would be. It seemed that the waterfall was getting further and further away, but there was no way I was going to turn back without seeing what I wanted to see. Besides, the valley looked beautiful and there wasn't as much of a climb, so it inspired me to continue ❣️.

Habré caminado algo de dos kilómetros más cuando al fin llegué al cartel que indicaba el desvío hacia la cascada. Recién desde ese punto, la senda eran 5 kilómetros ida y vuelta, y no desde la ruta como yo creía. Parecía que la cascada estaba cada vez más lejos, pero de ninguna forma me iba a volver sin ver lo que yo quería. Además, el valle se veía hermoso y no había tanta subida, por lo que me inspiró a continuar ❣️.

But the flat terrain didn't last that long, because once I entered the forest I encountered the worst muddy climb it could have been. This wouldn't have been much under normal conditions, but after more than three hours of walking it was weighing on me a bit. Slowly but steadily I continued on, guided by all the signs left in the forest to mark the path, until I found the river into which the waterfall flowed. It was impossible to get lost here, although I don't deny that I had to fight with some bushes to get through 😅.

Pero eso del terreno plano no duró tanto, porque una vez que ingresé en el bosque me encontré con la peor subida embarrada que podía haber sido. Esto no hubiese sido mucho en condiciones normales, pero después de más de tres horas de caminata ya me pesaba un poco. Con paso lento pero firme seguí, guiándome por todas las señales que dejan en el bosque para marcar la senda, hasta que encontré el río en el que desembocaba la cascada. Era imposible perderse por acá, aunque no niego que tuve que pelearme con algunos arbustos para poder pasar 😅.

Los Amigos Waterfall is quite a high and beautiful waterfall, and lucky for me, on the day of my visit there was no one else there. I had all the space to explore it, get close to the water and take all the pictures I wanted. I even tried to climb up to the level of the waterfall by a wall on the side, but then I realised that it was too dangerous and that if something happened to me nobody would come to help me, so I had better get down 😂.

La Cascada de los Amigos es un salto de agua bastante alto y hermoso, y para mi suerte, el día de mi visita no había nadie más en ese lugar. Tuve todo el espacio para explorarlo, acercarme al agua y tomar todas las fotos que quería. Incluso intenté subir un poco hasta el nivel de la cascada por una pared que había al costado, pero después caí en la cuenta de que era muy peligroso y que si me pasaba algo nadie iría a auxiliarme, así que mejor me bajé 😂.

One thing they always laugh about in the hostel every time I go trekking is how nutritious my lunches are. For all the walking I do in a day, I should eat a lot and eat well, but I always have light lunches with some fruit. The truth is that I'm always too lazy to make myself something better, I'm not going to lie, but at least the food I take on hikes has always given me the energy I need to come back safe and sound 😅.

Algo por lo que siempre se ríen en el hostel cada vez que salgo de trekking es por lo poco nutritivos que son mis almuerzos. Para todo lo que camino en el día, debería comer un montón y bien cargado, pero siempre tengo almuerzos livianos con algo de fruta. La verdad es que siempre soy muy vaga como para hacerme algo mejor, no voy a mentir, pero al menos la comida que llevo a las caminatas siempre me dio la energía necesaria para volver sana y salva 😅.

By the time I got back from the waterfall and reached the road again, I was very tired from walking so far and against all my safety principles, I hitched a ride back to the city. There are a lot of people coming down the road from the hotel, so they were quick to make room for me and give me a lift. It was fun to tell them how far I had walked to get to the waterfall, and although I know that from the hostel to the trailhead I could have easily taken a taxi, if I had, this day would not have been as memorable as it was 😃.

Para cuando volví de la cascada y nuevamente llegué a la ruta, ya estaba muy cansada por haber caminado tanto y contra todos mis principios de seguridad, hice "dedo" para que alguien me llevara de regreso a la ciudad. Por la ruta baja mucha gente que vuelve del hotel, así que no tardaron en hacerme un lugar y llevarme. Fue divertido contarles todo lo que había caminado para llegar a la cascada, y aunque sé que del hostel al inicio del sendero podría haber ido perfectamente en taxi, si hubiese sido así este día no hubiese sido tan memorable como lo fue 😃.
