Argentina - Trying to get to the Ojo del Albino Glacier... and failing but getting a great personal photo. / Tratando de llegar al Glaciar Ojo del Albino... y fallando pero logrando una gran foto personal. 😂❤️

The thing about beautiful places is that once you are there, you always want to see a little more. I'm quickly influenced by the thought of making the effort to get there worthwhile, so I always like to take as many memories as possible with me. This adventurous spirit made me collect a lot of anecdotes and photos throughout these months of travel, all of them very special to me. If I had to choose the best of them within my trip around Ushuaia, it would undoubtedly be the afternoon when we tried to see the Ojo del Albino Glacier, because despite not having reached it, I learned a lot about my own capabilities and I took a good photo of that day as a souvenir 💕.

Lo que tienen los lugares hermosos es que una vez que estas en ellos, siempre tenes ganas de ver un poco más. Yo me dejo influenciar rápidamente por ese pensamiento de hacer valer el esfuerzo de haber llegado hasta ahí, así que siempre dentro de las posibilidades, me gusta llevarme la mayor cantidad de recuerdos posibles. Este espíritu aventurero me hizo a recolectar una buena cantidad de anécdotas y fotos a lo largo de estos meses de viaje, todos muy especiales para mí. Si tuviera que elegir el mejor de ellos dentro de mi paseo por Ushuaia, sin dudas sería la tarde en la que tratamos de ver el Glaciar Ojo del Albino, porque a pesar de no haber llegado hasta él, aprendí mucho sobre mis propias capacidades y me llevé una buena foto de ese día como souvenir 💕.

The trail to the Esmeralda Lagoon is one of the must-do walks you have to do if you are traveling in Ushuaia. This place is one of the most advertised by travel agencies and mountain guides, and of course it attracts hundreds of visitors every day. The hike up there did not seem very complicated and with a fairly friendly tour, and its beauty certainly justifies all the hype around it. Starting from the road 12 km from the city and after a walk of almost two hours, it is possible to reach this incredible landscape 😃.

El sendero hasta la Laguna Esmeralda es uno de los paseos imperdibles que tenes que hacer si estas de viaje en Ushuaia. Este lugar es uno de los más publicitados por las agencias de viaje y guías de montaña, y por supuesto que atrae a cientos de visitantes cada día. La caminata hasta allá no me pareció muy complicada y con un recorrido bastante amigable, y su belleza sin dudas justifica toda la propaganda a su alrededor. Partiendo desde la ruta a 12 km de la ciudad y después de una caminata de casi dos horas, es posible llegar a este paisaje increíble 😃.

Most people who choose to spend the day at this place just picnic at the entrance of the lagoon, but it is also possible to go around it and walk a little further to the bottom to access another attraction within this area. Just on the road in front of the lagoon is the pass to the Ojo del Albino Glacier, one of the many that are in the surroundings of this city. Reaching the glacier already implies a higher level of demand because the road is up the mountain, but we explorers wanted to see if we could reach it 😃.

La mayoría de las personas que eligen ir a pasar el día a este lugar solo se quedan haciendo picnic en la entrada de la laguna, pero también es posible rodearla y caminar un poco más hacia el fondo para acceder a otro atractivo dentro de esta zona. Justo en el camino frente a la laguna se encuentra el paso hacia el Glaciar Ojo del Albino, uno de los tantos que hay en los alrededores de esta ciudad. Llegar hasta el glaciar ya implica un nivel de exigencia superior porque el camino es montaña arriba, pero nosotros exploradores queríamos ver si lográbamos llegar hasta él 😃.

Although this part is not as busy as the first stretch to the lagoon, the trail was well marked with yellow signs. We also found a sign indicating that it was forbidden to advance without a specialized guide and without the proper equipment, but we assumed that this was for the winter season (or so we wanted to believe because we still wanted to continue walking a little more). The good thing about going almost in summer is that the roads were clear and there was only snow on the high mountain, allowing you a bit of both ❣️.

A pesar de que esta parte no es tan transitada como el primer tramo hasta la laguna, el sendero estaba bien señalizado con chapitas amarillas. También nos encontramos con un cartel que indicaba que estaba prohibido avanzar sin guía especializado y sin el equipo adecuado, pero supusimos que eso era para la temporada invernal (o eso quisimos creer porque igual queríamos seguir caminando un poco más). Lo bueno de haber ido casi en verano es que los caminos estaban despejados y solo había nieve en la alta montaña, permitiendote un poco de ambas cosas ❣️.

After crossing a little forest, you reach the base of the mountain and from there begins the climb, quite steep indeed. While I had been on other small hills before, I had never been in such a cold place so the experience was totally new to me. With the hike being so demanding in this part, it was very easy to get hot and sweaty from not having fully absorbent clothing, so I had to handle this with care. I knew I wanted to climb quite a bit, so I went slowly, even if it meant moving a bit away from my group of companions 😶.

Después de atravesar un poco de bosque, se llega a la base de la montaña y a partir de ahí empieza la subida, bastante pronunciada por cierto. Si bien yo había estado en otros pequeños cerros antes, nunca había estado en un lugar tan frío así que la experiencia fue totalmente nueva para mí. Con la caminata tan exigente en esta parte, era muy fácil entrar en calor y transpirar por no tener la ropa completamente absorbente, así que tuve que manejar esto con cuidado. Sabía que quería subir bastante, así que fui poco a poco, aún cuando esto significó alejarme un poco de mi grupo de acompañantes 😶.

The good thing is that this steep road allowed us to gain altitude quickly and in just a short time we had a very good view of the Laguna Esmeralda from above. In this area the road was already covered with snow in parts and the signs were not very good, but you could be guided by the footprints of other people. I was glad I chose to bring poles for this trek because they were really necessary, as were the waterproof shoes and all the windproof clothing I had. Some good choices from my past self 😅.

Lo bueno es que este camino tan empinado permitía ganar altura rápidamente y en solo un rato ya pudimos tener unas muy buenas vistas de la Laguna Esmeralda desde arriba. En esta zona el camino ya estaba tapado de nieve por partes y las señalizaciones no se veían muy bien, pero podías guiarte con las huellas de otras personas. Me alegré de haber elegido llevar bastones para este trekking porque realmente eran necesarios, al igual que los zapatos impermeables y toda la ropa rompevientos que tenía. Algunas buenas decisiones de mi yo del pasado 😅.

As we climbed higher and higher, the road became more and more covered with snow. From other people's footprints, you could tell how many of them had been here in the last while, and there didn't seem to have been enough of them. At the beginning, the tracks were perfectly marked, but then not so much, to the point that it was no longer snow, but solid, slippery ice. My footwear was always fine for most of the terrain I had visited so far, but I could no longer walk safely on such hard ice even with the help of poles. Ideally I would have had crampons, but I didn't know that until I was out there (I wish there had been a sign on the trail to indicate this 😂) 🙃.

A medida que íbamos subiendo y subiendo, el camino estaba más y más cubierto de nieve. Por las huellas de otras personas, podías darte cuenta de cuantos de ellos habían estado acá en el último tiempo y no parecían haber sido bastantes. Al inicio, las huellas estaban perfectamente marcadas, pero luego ya no tanto, al punto de que ya no era nieve lo que pisábamos, sino hielo sólido y resbaloso. El calzado que yo uso siempre estaba bien para la mayoría de los terrenos que había visitado hasta el momento, pero ya no podía caminar con seguridad sobre este hielo tan duro ni siquiera con ayuda de los bastones. Lo ideal hubiese sido tener crampones, pero no lo supe hasta que no estuve ahí (ojalá en el sendero hubiese habido un cartel que lo indicara 😂) 🙃.

I'm generally pretty brave and not afraid of heights, but the sum of all these little things made me wary of whether or not to continue. As I looked back, I could see how high we were and my mind played a trick on me to start thinking that if I slipped in that area, the fall was going to be terrible. Before leaving the hostel, the owner gave us the advice "that if the road makes you hesitate, it is best not to continue", and I was in just that situation. At that moment it seemed to me that the smartest thing to do was to just sit there, enjoying the scenery and everything I had walked so far. One of my fellow hikers that day decided to continue, even though he didn't have the right shoes either and was able to climb a lot higher without any problems, but it wasn't enough to inspire me to do the same. In the first photo, you can see a small silhouette on the edge of the mountain, that's him 😅.

Generalmente soy bastante valiente y no le tengo miedo a las alturas, pero la suma de todas estas pequeñas cosas me hizo desconfiar de si seguir o no. Al mirar atrás, pude ver lo alto que estábamos y mi mente me jugó la mala pasada de empezar a pensar en que si me resbalaba en esa zona, la caída iba a ser terrible. Antes de salir del hostel, el dueño nos dió el consejo de "que si el camino te hace dudar, lo mejor es no continuar", y justamente me encontraba en esa situación. En ese momento me pareció que lo más inteligente era quedarme sentada hasta ahí nomás, disfrutando el paisaje y de todo lo que había caminado hasta el momento. Uno de mis compañeros de caminata de ese día decidió seguir, a pesar de que él tampoco tenía el calzado adecuado y pudo subir bastante más sin problemas, pero no fue suficiente como para inspirarme a mí a hacer lo mismo. En la primera foto, se ve una pequeña silueta en el filo de la montaña, ese es él 😅.

Although my companion kept going higher than me, he couldn't make it to the glacier either because there was no marked trail to indicate where it was. We both felt a little defeated, but we still preferred to preserve our physical integrity. When we finally started to descend, we stayed for a while in what seemed to be a good viewpoint of the lagoon. Ushuaia's weather is very changeable and all day we had had variable cloud cover, but just at that moment the sun came out and we took advantage of it to take some pictures with this great scenery in the background. By far, this photo is my favorite picture of this trip: I think it's a great postcard, in an incredible place that I got to thanks to my effort of all kinds and of course, I liked how I look with all my mountain outfit 😅.

A pesar de que mi compañero siguió subiendo más que yo, él tampoco pudo llegar hasta el glaciar porque no había ningún sendero marcado que indicara hacia donde era. Nos quedó un poco de sabor a derrota a los dos, pero igualmente preferimos conservar nuestra integridad física. Cuando finalmente empezamos a bajar, nos quedamos un rato en lo que parecía ser un buen mirador de la laguna. El clima de Ushuaia es muy cambiante y todo el día habíamos tenido nubosidad variable, pero justo en ese momento salió el sol que aprovechamos para sacarnos unas fotos con este gran paisaje de fondo. Por lejos, esta foto es mi foto favorita de este viaje: pienso que es una gran postal, en un lugar increíble al que llegué gracias a mi esfuerzo de todo tipo y por supuesto, me gustó como me veo con todo mi outfit de montaña 😅.

When we told the hostel owners how far we had gone, they said that we had been very close to the glacier, but that it was still good that we didn't risk it in vain. After all, the place we arrived at was also good and the view from up there was great. All of these adventures are the ones I like the most, and it made me very happy to see so much snow after many years. At some point I know that I'm going to return to Ushuaia and this walk taught me a great lesson for hiking in high snowy mountains: bring crampons just in case 😅.

Cuando les dijimos a los dueños del hostel hasta donde habíamos llegado, ellos dijeron que habíamos estado muy cerca del glaciar, pero que igual había estado bien que no nos arriesguemos en vano. Después de todo, al lugar que llegamos también estuvo bien y la vista desde allá arriba fue genial. Todas estas aventuras son las que más me gustan, y me hizo muy feliz ver tanta nieve después de muchos años. En algún momento sé que voy a volver a Ushuaia y este paseo me dejó una gran lección para las caminatas en alta montaña nevada: llevar los crampones por si acaso 😅.
