In order to have enough time to explore the place, we decided to stay three nights in the city of Tupiza. In the previous days we had been in a bit of a hurry to get to the neighboring country Bolivia, but once there, we could relax a bit. However, this trip was not a complete vacation so we still had some schedules to keep, so it was not until our third day in Tupiza that we had enough time to go on a longer walk. To make the most of our day we decided to go to the famous Cross Viewpoint in the place, something that is repeated in almost all places but that always has new views to offer 😃.
Con el objetivo de tener tiempo suficiente como para explorar el lugar, decidimos quedarnos tres noches en la ciudad de Tupiza. En los días previos habíamos estado un poco apurados para llegar al país vecino Bolivia, pero una vez ahí, ya podíamos relajarnos un poco. Sin embargo, este viaje no era completamente de vacaciones por lo que todavía teníamos algunos horarios que cumplir, así que recién en nuestro tercer día en Tupiza tuvimos tiempo suficiente como para hacer un paseo más largo. Para aprovechar nuestro día decidimos ir al famoso Mirador de la Cruz del lugar, algo que se repite en casi todos los lugares pero que siempre tiene vistas nuevas para ofrecer 😃.
Throughout our trip to Bolivia we visited many places, but Tupiza was one of the ones I liked the most. This place brings together everything I always say I like to see when I'm traveling: a place with mountains but also with considerable urban development. Tupiza has all that, from beautiful landscapes to a bit of city life. Plus, the prices were very affordable, which made my experience there even better 😃.
En todo ese viaje en Bolivia visitamos muchos lugares, pero Tupiza fue uno de los que más me gustó. Este lugar reune todo lo que siempre digo que me gusta ver cuando estoy viajando: un lugar con montañas pero también con un desarrollo urbano considerable. Tupiza tiene todo eso, desde paisajes hermosos hasta un poco de vida de ciudad. Además, los precios me resultaron muy económicos, por lo que mi experiencia ahí fue aún mejor 😃.
On our first two days we had taken advantage of the opportunity to go for walks around the area, but we always went by car or in the famous "tuk-tuks" that circulated around the city. But on our third day there we decided that it would be a full day of walking. The day we chose was quite hot, but we put on plenty of sunscreen, packed our lunch and went out to see what new place we could discover. It wasn't difficult to find the ideal place to go trekking, since from the center of the town you could see a cross on top of one of the reddish mountains 😃.
En nuestros dos primeros días habíamos aprovechado para ir a pasear por los alrededores, pero siempre fuimos en auto o en los famosos "tuc-tucs" que circulaban por la ciudad. Pero en nuestro tercer día ahí decidimos que sería un día completo de caminar. Justo el día que elegimos estaba bastante caluroso, pero igual nos pusimos mucho protector solar, cargamos nuestro almuerzo y salimos a ver qué lugar nuevo podíamos descubrir. No fue difícil encontrar el lugar ideal para ir a hacer algo de trekking, ya que desde el centro del pueblo se podía ver una cruz a lo alto de una de las montañas rojizas 😃.
From a distance it seemed close, but the start of the trail was 1.5 km from our hostel. When we arrived, we found a path that was not so marked but was still intuitive. Although Tupiza is one of the closest cities to the border with Argentina, it still retains its village essence and it seemed to me that it was not so exploited by tourists. This hill with the cross lookout point was not marked at all, so it seemed more like a recreational space for local people. And we looked like tourists even though we did not want to attract attention 😂.
Desde lejos parecía cerca, pero el incio del sendero se encontraba a 1,5 km desde nuestro hostel. Cuando llegamos, nos encontramos con un camino no tan marcado pero igual intuitivo. Si bien Tupiza es una de las ciudades más cercanas a la frontera con Argentina, aún conserva su escencia de pueblo y me pareció que no estaba tan explotada turísiticamente. Este cerro con el mirador de la cruz no estaba nada señalizado, por lo que parecía más un espacio de recreación para la gente local. Y nosotros teníamos toda la pinta de turistas aunque no quisiéramos llamar la atención 😂.
As for the trek itself, the path wasn't difficult, but we were already quite high up, so even easy walks were breathless. The town of Tupiza is at an altitude of 2900 meters above sea level, and this small hill only had an additional 200 meters of elevation. Under normal conditions, climbing 200 meters in the 2 km of this trail is nothing, but between the heat and the altitude, everything looked terrible. We had to stop a few times to catch our breath, but in the end we arrived safely ❤️.
En cuanto al trekking en sí, el camino no era dificil, pero ya estabamos bastante alto por lo que hasta las caminatas sencillas te dejaban sin aire. La ciudad de Tupiza se encuentra a una altura de 2900 msnm y este pequeño cerro solo tenía un desnivel de 200 metros más. En condiciones normales, subir 200 metros en los 2 km que tenía este sendero no es nada, pero entre el calor y la altura todo se veía terrible. Tuvimos que parar algunas veces para recuperar el aliento, pero al final llegamos sanos y salvos ❤️.
The views from that lookout point were really beautiful. From up there you could see the whole city, which was much bigger than we imagined. Something that caught my attention about Bolivia is that most of the buildings still have their orange bricks visible, which from a distance makes them blend in with the landscape. This whole city didn't clash with its surroundings and blended in very well, so the postcard from up there was picturesque. It also seemed to me that this place is expanding beyond its original boundaries, so I'm sure that in a few years it will be even more populated ❣️.
Las vistas desde ese mirador eran en verdad hermosas. Desde ahí arriba se podía ver toda la ciudad, que era mucho más grande de lo que imaginabamos. Algo que me llamó la atención de Bolivia es que la mayoría de las construcciones mantienen sus ladrillos anaranjados a la vista, lo que desde lejos hace que se camuflen con el paisaje. Toda esta ciudad no desentonaba con su entorno y combinaba muy bien, por lo que la postal desde ahí era pintoresca. También me pareció que este lugar se esta expandiendo más allá de sus límites originales, por lo que estoy segura que dentro de algunos años estará todavía más poblada ❣️.
The viewpoint with the cross in Tupiza was a good plan to take advantage of our day of trekking and also to have lunch with a good view from there. I really liked this place, even though it wasn't fun to feel out of breath on that high hike. We still had a few days ahead to get used to that, so that was just the beginning. As I sat there, eating my humble lunch sandwich, I couldn't stop thinking about life's twists and turns: I was much further away than I had planned to go and I was very happy that things had surprised me for the better ❤️.
El mirador con la cruz en Tupiza fue un buen plan para aprovechar nuestro día de trekking y también para tener un almuerzo con una buena vista desde ahí. Me gustó mucho este lugar, a pesar de que no fue divertido sentirse sin aire en esa caminata tan alta. Todavía teniamos unos cuantos días por delante para acostumbrarnos a eso, así que ese solo fue el comienzo. Cuando estaba ahí sentada, comiendo mi humilde sandwich de almuerzo no podía dejar de pensar en las vueltas de la vida: estaba mucho más lejos de lo que había planeado llegar y me ponía muy feliz que las cosas me hayan sorprendido para bien ❤️.

Hola :) Si, creo que en Bolivia es todo muy seco y no hay mucha vegetación por eso. Casi que no nos cruzamos tantos lugares verdes, la mayoría de las cosas eran más bien desérticas pero igual lindas.
