It Smells Like...Amsterdam!

in Pinmapple7 months ago (edited)

Amsterdam is a city abuzz with sights, sounds, and scents.

What really struck me was the city's rich historical legacy, seen in the magnificent Renaissance and Baroque architecture; the bustling streets with a high number of tourists and locals of course, and the amazing diverse means of transport.

The characteristic Dutch architecture featuring narrow towering buildings, with steep and hazardous staircases, creates a sensation of stepping into a bygone era. However, once you enter, many buildings have been revamped into sleek and modern decor.

Madame Tussaud in all her glory, showing off the rich and famous, but in wax models of course!

Of course, many Cheese specialties can be found in every city and town in the Netherlands.

I do not think any other nation in the world knows how to make the best use of space as the Dutch people do!

Many of these buildings along the canals were built in the 1600s by merchants who wanted quick access to trade. As demand was high for land, the government based the taxes on the length of the building frontages. The traders quickly outwitted the authorities, so simply built higher buildings to have more floor area.

We saw a couple of those tall buildings leaning quite precariously.

Many grand buildings have the best views of the canals. Cruises can be taken if one has the time, which we ran out of, but we had done the Pannenkoeken Boot the day before.

Many high-end chic department stores are found in De Bijenkorf.

I never thought one could find so many people walking city streets alongside bicycles, trams, buses, and cars. That of course is thanks to good urban and transport planning.

Coming from South Africa, the public transport system in the Netherlands still amazes me.
The 9292-App is a Dutch public transport navigator, and calculates the best route - so one often hops from train to train using a prepaid chip card. Trains range from intercity, sprinters, subway, and even international; then there are trams in the cities, buses, and ferries. Loads of walking in between as well, strolling, or fast-paced, depending on how rushed you are.

I'd heard of the bicycles, but never realized just how many there are; I soon learned to stay off the cycle lane, as some come whizzing past at quite a speed! Young and old cycle; ingenious designs that only the Dutch people could think of! It's not odd to see someone ride a bicycle using only one hand while checking their phone, some at times even ride without holding the handles at all!

When in Amsterdam, I quickly learned that coffee is not on the menu at any coffeeshop, I would need to find a cafê for that! The distinctive scent of cannabis drifting through the passageways and avenues of Amsterdam soon became a familiar presence, and as night settled in, it becomes even stronger.

The highlight of our second day back in Amsterdam was visiting the Anne Frank House Museum.
The museum of course is dedicated Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl who kept a diary during the Second World War when the Nazis were persecuting Jewish people. Anne and her family, as well as other Jewish people, were given shelter by a Dutch couple.

It was surreal walking up the very steep narrow staircases to the tiny rooms where they were hidden, in what they called the secret annex, hidden behind a wall built to represent a bookcase. It must have been stifling hot during the summer months, and awfully oppressing not being able to go outside and see the sun. Anne passed the time by keeping a diary, writing short stories and even keeping a book of favourite quotes; all these are on display.

Tickets had to be booked a couple of weeks in advance, the audio-visual tour lasts about an hour, and no photography is allowed inside. There were queues of people waiting for their time slot.

The building is located on the Prinsengracht canal near the Westerkerk in central Amsterdam.

I walked a total of 12905 steps that day, a record for an old gal like me.

We had a delicious meal to end our day, and walked to our second last stop, the tram, with the unmistakable scent of Amsterdam bidding us farewell into the night.

Wow! 12905 steps make me think that you have been sniffing too much happy twak Lady Lizzie.
It is said that cannabis is a great energizer and I am surprised that you didn't start running around !LOL

Only joking to get a smile and the Netherlands is at the top of my bucket list. I have friends there that has invited us to visit, but it's an expensive story that is still way above my fireplace.
A very interesting post and very well written. Glad that you enjoyed the visit.
All our love, Zac and Marian.

Hahaha, I think the smoke wafting our way was enough to put me on a high! I've never walked as much as here in the Netherlands. Feeling much better though, actually on quite a high:)
Thanks to you and Marian for the love and encouragement!
I would never have been able to afford this trip, it was such a generous gift from our son, just awfully sad that Arthur's not here to enjoy it all!

Yep, I have heard stories of people becoming chatter boxes when they visit Amsterdam !LOL
Glad that you are on a high, as you have been through a terrible time.
Always a pleasure to support milady and I read today that the town where Fiona stays had its roads opened at last today after the damage of the floods. They were landlocked and running out of everything.

Believe me when I say that Arthur is right there with you now, even if he is in a much better place.
Stay well, enjoy and take care. Oh, and try not to smell too much of the happy twak 🤣

Haha I will only go that way again when I fly back home in just under a month, think I'll need to do more than just smell that twak if I want to get any sleep in on the flight. It's going to be a Boeing, and their seating is very cramped!!!
I'm so glad to hear McGregor has access again, it must have been very difficult!
I believe you, my friend, I do feel his presence at times, it's been awesome. We're going to Den Haag today, I want to see the Peace Palace and will meet up with an old school friend at the station.
Blessings to you and Marian xxx

Say no more, as I used to fly often in our country and my 6.3 foot frame also struggled for space in the Boeings. I just cannot see you actually smoking that twak and maybe a better idea would be some form of a tranquilizer for the plane trip. As long as you don't start sleep walking in the plane, all should be good methinks !LOL

Oh yes, they had a tough time in McGregor and maybe Fiona will tell us more in a post.
So glad that you could feel his presence as it makes things so much better. Enjoy your visit at Den Haag and I don't know what the Peace Palace is, but mother Google will tell me. Great that you will also meet with an old friend.
Blessings to you and your son and his wife Lady Lizzie.

Amsterdam is is a fun city to walk, tram hop from place to place, not surprised mileage you did on the day, one does more than expected when we having fun!

Anne Frank was a book I was given as a birthday present by my parents when I was 16 they knew I had a love for all WW11 reading. A woman who really left an impression on me throughout my life, never give up hope. We did not find the home, not having technology back then, one really had to know before going into cities when traveling with fold out maps.

Quaint buildings, exquisite architecture, selection of food, leaves you giddy!

What stood us in good stead was knowledge of Afrikaans helped us get by, some places we could barely understand the dialect, yet other regions were able to get by in conversation, not purely sign language. My husband spoke some Dutch with his Gran and Mother as a child, it did not take us very far.... !LOLZ

You're so right Joan, way too much to see and do in that beautiful old city!
I've admired Anne Frank ever since I first heard about her, what an inspiration. Especially seeing the stifling cramped conditions they lived in, yet she kept on dreaming.
It's been a very special time Joan, I feel so very blessed 💞

Having digital to save memories on the go, when you get back it takes ages to re-enjoy those moments.

You feel like you walking in the clouds, seeing how very different life could be, enjoy every minute!

Well my head feels like it's spinning at times, especially when we're hopping from one train to another, there are so many platforms as well on the bigger stations! Or onto a tram or a bus in the city, but it's great memories to take home!

Transport so very efficient, no need for a car in many places. Surrender to enjoyment, take loads of photos you will want to relive the memories later.

No coffee in the coffee shops, that's a head-scratcher. You should have turned them onto some of the marvelous cups of bean you make and they would start carrying the stuff.

It sounds like you are having a wonderful time visiting so many places. Years ago I read the book, Tales from the Secret Annex, what a story of both bravery and harrowing experiences while hiding from the German Army. To think that she was only 13 at the time is quite remarkable.

What a wonderful gift from your son to treat you to such a splendid vacation. The visit with him and his wife has to be very therapeutic. You must know that Arthur is tagging right along, I just hope he was able to keep up, 12,905 is no joke. I'm surprised he didn't whisper in your ear, "Slow down lady."

Thanks for taking us all with you, the pics are fabulous and you sure do have a way with words.

Enjoy the remainder of your stay and if I could make one suggestion, take a few more evening strolls, it sounds like the fresh air is doing you good.

Peace be with you, my friend!

Haha, I think Arthur's been talking to all of us as we're having a rest day today. Yesterday's visit to Den Haag (The Hague) saw me doing just over 10 200 steps!
Yep, we saw a couple of coffeeshops there as well, but nothing like Amsterdam, and no pungent smoky aromas wafting from those windows!

There is a nature reserve about 500 metres from my son's apartment, yet it's only a 5-minute walk to the local shops, same with the train station, which is only a 2-minute ride to the closest city. They were very fortunate to find such a spacious apartment in a tree-lined street.

We're encountering many hazardous staircases here, just like Anne Frank House. Arthur and I watched the TV mini-series called A Small Light which tells the story of Miep Gies, the Dutch lady who risked her life to shelter the Frank family and other Jewish people, very good series.

It gets dark here much later than by us, even though they're already well into autumn.
Evening strolls sound very good, something we cannot do in my home country because of the crime! Terribly sad!

Arthur is telling me I'm talking too much, so I will let you go :):)

Have a great Sunday my friend, and a big hug to Robin!

Sounds like a very convenient area for doing much of what needs to be done and for getting out and about for pleasure.

I'll be looking into that mini-series, it sounds like something Robin and I would totally enjoy.

Big hug right back at sweet Lizzie.

What an incredible place to visit! How wonderful! Thank you for sharing your travels and your awesome photography with us.

It's been awesome, my son and his girlfriend are spoiling me rotten. I've never been to so many towns and cities in such a short space of time, I feel really blessed.
Hope you're keeping well @clairemobey and that you weren't affected by those awful floods?

We were warned before our first trip to Amsterdam that you if you want coffee you avoid coffeeshops. I had a giggle when I read your post. I was last in Holland many years ago. I was living in the UK and could drive across (via the ferry). One of my highlights was the cheese. Amazing. And the tulips. We spent two days cycling through the tulip fields. I hope your experience is unforgettable

Haha, I was just as surprised to hear about the coffeeshop not serving coffee, we were in The Hague yesterday, and I saw a number there as well😉
It really is an unforgettable experience, we've been to a number of towns, their transport system is just amazing!
The initial plan was that hubby and I go in May to see the tulips, but his health was starting to fail.
Nice seeing you @buckaroobaby!

Those building architectural designs are just so beautiful. Congrats by the way on 12k steps almost 13k. Have fun on your trip and wish to see more posts from your travel.

Amsterdam was my record, there's just so much to see in that beautiful city.
I am slowly sharing my trip here with everyone on Hive 😉

You made it there. Awesome, Lizelle

Have a blast 😌😘❤️

Thank you Nicky, it was so difficult getting on that plane without my man, but like you say, I made it, and am so thankful I did!
Hope you're keeping well Nicky xxx

Getting better every day :)

I've learned to pace myself! Better late than never!

It's a beautiful city. Enjoy! Highly recommend the Van Gogh museum. He's one of my faves. Just get your tissues out <3

Haha, Amsterdam definitely has one of the most specific smells when it comes to the famous places you can visit in Europe, lol!

LOL, Yep @gabrielatravels so you've been there, unmistakably Amsterdam. I must hop over and see what you've been up to😉

Actually I haven't. But I have friends living there and I heard a loooot of stories, lol. Hope you are well! ❤️

Ohh wow nice .
The building are very beautiful and well maintained .
And what was that food you ate which had walnuts in it?

It was a delicious Spinach, Mushroom, Gorgonzola and walnut Quiche. You're right, despite their age, the buildins are beautifully preserved.
Thanks for stopping by @bittujos

This brings back so many good memories! I know those streets like the back of my hand. I really like how much cycling is part of the culture there. It looks like you've had a great time!

Gosh Eric, so you've walked many steps in Amsterdam! We only saw a fraction of what we really wanted to see, but probably will still go there. I only leave on 1 Nov, am loving the country. We've been to a number of towns and cities, had a rest day but tomorrow it's Utrecht. I'm really thankful for this break, the past few months have been awful.
It looks like you enjoyed Ireland 🤗

We stayed there for quite a while the last time we were there and really got to know the city. We'd still love to go back, there's just so much to see! I'm so happy to hear you've had a good trip and it's been a break from the stress you've been under. Ireland was wonderful, probably my favorite destination so far. Enjoy the time you have left there and safe travels!

For those of us who have read Anne Frank's diary, it must be a sensation full of emotions to be able to visit that museum and feel a small part of what she experienced. Amsterdam is a beautiful city between the old and the present, very well planned, it is one of my I dream of being able to meet her soon. Thanks for this tour.

For sure, visiting the Anne Frank House was a highlight. The city is fascinating, but we didn't have enough time so may go back there before I return home.
I hope your dream also comes true, I never believed I would be able to travel here, but it is a gift from my son and his girlfriend ❤

We saw a couple of those tall buildings leaning quite precariously.

Indeed! Let's just hope they are squished in well with the ones next to it:D

Enjoy your stay!!:)

I don't think I'd feel safe living in one of those but like you say, maybe the ones next door are lending a helping hand 😉

Surely that wouldn't be the safest feeling!!😅

Loved looking through your photos. That is really a neat one showing the building leaning forward. ha....

Interesting about the .... smell. LOL

Whatever that meal is called, it looks really delish !

Thanks for sharing your fun.

Hi Jacey, yes that smell followed us everywhere in Amsterdam, in none of the other towns ;)
Stroop Wafels everywhere yes. That meal was a Spinach, Mushroom, Gorgonzola and walnut Quiche, absolutely divine, definitely on my wishlist to try and replicate!
I'd be afraid to live in that building, LOL imagine walking on a sloping floor:)

That quiche is so fancy, I didn't recognize it as a quiche. Very nice presentation.

I'm sure you'll do it justice. I've seen lots of the wonderful food you've made.

Dreams do come true, this was one of mine, and it has been so worth the wait, just awesome 👌 Keep on dreaming @jane1289

I miss this place, so much!

Never knew Amsterdam is this beautiful 😍 Wow and the artwork is top notch 👌

It is a real stunning city but one needs way more time to see everything.

Ofcourse one can't see all or visit everywhere in a day. I'm not even sure everywhere can be visited in a whole year.

The narrow, towering buildings with their steep staircases are indeed iconic and give Amsterdam its distinctive look. It's interesting to know about the historical tax system that influenced the construction of these buildings along the canals. The Dutch have certainly found creative ways to make the most of their limited space.
Thank you for sharing your experience in Amsterdam, and I'm glad you enjoyed your time exploring the city's rich heritage and unique attractions. If you have more stories or photos to share, feel free to do so! Amsterdam has so much to offer, and your insights are appreciated.

I'm glad you enjoyed reading about Amsterdam, thank you

What a beautiful city, its architecture has a touch between classic and romantic. It looks like it was a good walk

Wow what a sight, Amsterdam is indeed beautiful and you did a great job in capturing the sights. I think I would love to go on one of those bikes, they look so cool. Thanks for sharing these with us.

Amazing to see , one day I will make it there . It looks so clean! lol! NY is a mess!!!

It's no better here in SA, if only people respected and took pride in their environment, we could all have such a beautiful place to live in!

Really a beautiful city 😄

I didn't get the chance to visit the Ann Frank house, altho0ugh its a must for the future. I was 13 years old when I acted in the play "The Diary of Anne Frank" - and it holds som precious memories for me
