The first thing that caught my eye was the long, pristine sandbar stretching into the sparkling blue waters. The turquoise sea around the island was so clear that I could see the sea floor. It's like a different place each time you come here as the tide changes the shape of the sandbar. Walking along this sandbar, as the waves gently licked at my feet, was heaven.
The ride to the island was exhilarating. Seeing Kalanggaman Island from afar, with its untouched beauty, was surreal. During early mornings or late afternoons, the place is a serene paradise, with soft waves and painted orange and purple skies. I couldn't resist taking dozens of photos to capture its natural beauty.
Calm Waters and Stunning Horizon
The island can be the ultimate place to stay. Near the shore stood the traditional Filipino boats, and the locals had referred to this as "bangkas." These add more charm to the island by merging harmoniously well with the tranquil waters and the sky. In terms of beauty, the setting sun is breathtakingly magical in a way where it creates the ethereal glowing light for surroundings. It is an experience that is unforgettable-sitting quietly on the shore and watching the boat swaying gently in the tide.
Not only do the waters of Kalanggaman please the eyes, but they are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Visibility underwater is great, so you can see plenty of fish and coral if you have snorkeling gear. But even for those who do not wish to get wet, just wading in and feeling the waves wash over their knees is satisfaction enough.
Nature Beauty and Island Vibes
For this reason, among others, one of the reasons I loved Kalanggaman Island is that it is so verdant and luscious green. To my surprise, the island has not been that commercialized as well, hence its charm is intact. With every step towards the shore while walking, such simplicity of those surroundings was hugely appreciated: the blue sky and palms swaying left and right, warm grounds beneath.
The island is small and can be toured on foot. A short walk will take you to its quiet places, where you can be in solitude, listening to the soothing waves. Even though it has basic huts and benches for visitors to use, it still feels untamed and natural.
Tips for visiting Kalanggaman Island
Kalanggaman Island is a place that needs some planning to make the most of your trip. Here are a few tips I gathered during my visit:
1. Pack Essentials
Since the island is remote, bring everything you need, including sunscreen, water, snacks, and a hat. There are no big stores on the island, so it's best to come prepared.
2. Wear Comfortable Clothes
Lightweight, breathable clothes and water shoes are ideal for exploring the island. Don't forget your swimsuit if you plan on swimming or snorkeling.
3. Respect the Environment
Kalanggaman Island is a protected area, so make sure to follow the "leave no trace" rule. Dispose of your trash properly, and avoid stepping on the corals or disturbing marine life.
4. Bring Cash
Some businesses, like boat rentals or small vendors, only take cash, so it's a good idea to have some available.
5. Visit During the Week
If possible, visit during the week to avoid the crowds. Weekends and holidays are often busy, especially with day-trippers.
6. Stay Hydrate
The island gets very hot sometimes, so one needs to be well hydrated the whole day by drinking a lot of water.
How to get there
Getting to Kalanggaman Island is already an adventure in itself. From the coast of Palompon in Leyte, the usual route starts either from Cebu or from Tacloban. If coming from Cebu City, one can take the ferry going to Ormoc City, which will take approximately 2-3 hours. From Ormoc, ride a bus or van to Palompon. This takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. Tourists coming from Tacloban City can take a direct bus or van to Palompon. The travel time will take approximately 3 hours. Upon arrival in Palompon, you will then be directed to the Palompon Eco-Tourism Office to arrange a boat ride to the island. The boat ride would last for approximately 45 minutes to an hour. You should book your boat in advance; it's especially effective during peak seasons, and sharing a boat with other travelers can make the ride very affordable.
