Hello my traveling friends, this time I want to tell you about a very special place that houses many stories of heroism, love and sadness that are told through high quality sculptural art.
It is the necropolis of Columbus in Havana that treasures monumental works to perpetuate the memory of events, personalities and loved ones. They are also works of art of great artistic value made by important artists, for this reason it receives daily visits from art lovers from all over the world.
Earlier in this POST I showed you some sculptural works and promised to come back to share some important monuments for their historical and popular value.
Firefighters' Pantheon
It is the largest monumental work in the cemetery, it can be seen from the entrance by its 10 meters high. This work was made by the Spanish sculptor Agustín Querol in white marble and is dedicated to 25 firefighters who lost their lives fighting a fire in a public facility in 1890. At the top is represented the Angel of Faith with the body of a firefighter in his arms. At the base you can see the faces of the firefighters who died in this heroic act.
Chapel of the first Cuban woman divorced
It contains a love story between Juan de Pedro Baró and Catalina Lasa who fell in love while she was married. She asked the Vatican to annul her marriage and it was granted, she being the first Cuban woman divorced. When she died, the widower wanted to build the highest pantheon in the cemetery in front of the firefighters' pantheon, but none was allowed to exceed the height of the latter, so he came up with the idea of planting two royal palm trees in front of the pantheon so that when it grew it would exceed 10 meters in height and I think he succeeded. Beautiful chapel with a rear dome that lets the sun's rays pass through its stained glass windows.
Monument to the Medical Students
This is a very sad passage in our history when in 1871 8 medical students were unjustly accused of desecrating the tomb of a Spanish journalist. Despite their innocence, they were all shot. In 1899 the monument made of white marble by the Cuban sculptor José Vilalta was inaugurated where he was able to represent the injustice committed through the artistic language of sculpture. At the base of the monument, the faces of the students can be seen sculpted in bronze reliefs.
Monument to Generalissimo
This beautiful obelisk-shaped monument is striking for its elegance. Something curious is that he does not have his name written in the work, but we recognize him by the effigy that is represented in the medallion, it was his own decision that he left written under his will. Máximo Gómez, Dominican by origin, fought in Cuba in the wars of independence and died in 1905. For this reason, the two flags fly: the Cuban and the Dominican.
Architect's Chapel
The chapel of José Matta, who was director of the College of Architects, is a small-scale replica of an Egyptian pyramid. It was built in 1920 by his disciples in honor of the admiration he felt for that culture.
Popular legend "The Miraculous"
The most visited tomb is that of Amelia Goiry, known as "The Miraculous". It's a sad love story turned into legend. The sculpture was made in white marble by the renowned artist José Vilalta, it represents a young woman carrying a child with her left arm, while resting her right on a Latin cross.
Amelia Goiry was from high society in love with José Vadot who was not accepted by the family because he was poor. They manage to get married after several years fighting for their love, but during her first birth she and her child die. She is buried with the child at her feet and they say that, after years, when they uncovered the tomb, they found the child in her arms. From then on they call her La Milagrosa and many people come to her daily to ask for favors related to motherhood and the health of their children. Today the tomb is never short of flowers and messages of thanks written in marble.
Tomb of Cardinal Manuel Arteaga
In front of the main chapel of the cemetery there is a monumental complex that stands out for being made of red granite, the only one of its kind in this cemetery. It belongs to Cardinal Manuel Arteaga, archbishop of Havana (1941-1963). It is a simple but elegant monument that contrasts with the greenery of the lawn, its large cardinal's cross of the same material can be appreciated.
I hope you found it interesting to learn about the history of these important works of art. I invite you not to miss the opportunity to visit this open-air museum.
See you soon!
