Sierra de Aitana - a mountain that tests your strength

The wide blue of the sky, which has merged with the sea at a distant point, is what I was seeing in front of me. I stood there for a few minutes and watched, absorbing that wideness that has helped me a lot to forget about my neck pain. It has moved into my everyday life to remind me that I have this body to take care of, not just to use it until it serves me. Years pass and we have to slow down sometimes - too much work will not make my pain go away.

Back to the view of those mountains and sea! How a small thing can make your day, right? Although this excursion to the mountain was not the original plan... This walk wasn't even the plan B. After contemplating the idea of visiting one cove I remembered we should go to the spring to take water. We packed the empty bottles, drove to the Font del Molí water spring and saw there a woman who was filling countless bottles of water... and she just started. We gave up on the idea but no worries, we decided to hike instead.

DSC_6636.JPG

We took the PR-CV 464 trail, which is a path that connects two water springs, Font del Molí in Benimantell and Font de Partegat in Benifato. At this point, we were somewhere in the middle of the path. However, we didn't make it until the end. It was me who couldn't continue because... oh, now you will say how weak I was haha, but that is true, I was so hungry and didn't have food with me. I already started to feel the first signs of my "hunger depression". 😂

DSC_6582.JPG

This man with the bike was cheating a bit - he had an electric bicycle. It would not be that easy to ride a bike uphill. Neither it was easy to walk uphill... or it was just me who got weak already, with the thoughts that we didn't have any food in the bag. Just some candies, a type I don't really like, so it doesn't count.

DSC_6585.JPG

Yes, it seems that I was the only one with the strength problem because watching this group of people that carelessly progressed and climbed and laughed... OK, next time I will be prepared for unexpected situations. Water and some food are a must when we go to Sierra de Aitana. And a hiking stick, because now my knee hurts too. {getting old sucks 🤐}

DSC_6600.JPG

Still, I loved every single step and the views that we had. Look, on the right. There are two villages, on the right, surrounded by tall rocks is Guadalest and on the left is Benimantell. Those who followed my posts for some longer time had the opportunity to meet both of these little towns... At this moment, we were already at a much higher altitude than those villages.

DSC_6599.JPG

Although the vegetation of this mountain mainly consists of pine, almond and olive trees, there are pieces of land that have been cultivated. It is a blessing to spend here the summers, but the winters can be cold at this altitude.

DSC_6601.JPG

Speaking about winter and high altitude... At one point we saw this thing, that looked like ruins or a path that was used for something in the past. At the end of this "path" there was a huge hole.

DSC_6608.JPG

That deep hole was only fenced with a rope, so I came closer. Luckily, I didn't fall into that crater. Well, it would be interesting to see if I would survive and how I would come out of it.

We didn't even know why this hole was there... but I did some investigation later. So, believe me, or not, these holes were used to deposit snow! There are several of these snow wells on the northern side of Sierra de Aitana, some of them are bigger and better conserved. The snow was used to treat fever or conserve food like fish.

Hay and dry grass were placed in the bottom of the hole, then a layer of snow, followed again by a layer of hay and so on until the well was filled and covered again with a layer of hay. It served as insulation, so the people who lived here could use the snow and ice during the whole year.

IMG_20231209_160741.jpg

After the snow hole place, we continued and arrived at another interesting spot. Els Penyonets. The path passes between two rocks.

DSC_6617.JPG

Does it look like a face? I see the eyes, a nose, and a crown on the head. Well, could be that I saw that because of my hunger 😂

DSC_6618.JPG

That is the passage between the rocks. Here we wanted to turn back, but my husband was brave and with more strength. We continued a bit more.

DSC_6619.JPG

The views from this spot to the other side of the valley. The board showed the mountains with their most significant peaks. There was one peak called Alt de Tronca. I remembered that @godfish likes this word, tronco, as it was the first Spanish word he learned. (I am not sure if it can be seen well from the board, so I say it is there, in the middle)

DSC_6620.JPG

The other side of these rocks was nothing special, and the path was also not very demanding. However, this little hiking was soon over and we turned back. I also had a little guest with me on this excursion. Can you guess who?

DSC_6624.JPG

DSC_6629.JPG

Yes, it was Prince Hefromund!

Unfortunately, he didn't see snow (the snow hole was empty) but the fresh air of Sierra de Aitana also did good to him. The pain in my neck disappeared at least for the time we were there and little ph16 was happy to get out from the pocket where he slept for some time. Good luck to me, with my hurting knee now. 😂

I loved this post and reading it was a blast. I also want to highlight several elements:

  1. The beauty of the landscape. As a Geography teacher I have always admired the shapes of the relief and these mountains look beautiful. Also, I like the way the temperature changes with altitude. It is something I enjoyed in my classes in a practical way.
  2. The way you narrate the experience. That accurate and colloquial language makes everyone understand what you want to express and not want to stop until the end. It seems to me that this is one of the keys of the communicator.
  3. The close language and with a certain degree of humor. I loved how you relate your age, your knee problems, what would happen if you fell into a crater and how you would get out.

In short, from my modest and humble opinion, it was very good.

Just a piece of advice if I may: For excursions and hikes of this type you should try to ensure water and food because you subject the body to a rhythm in which it loses moisture and calories and needs to replenish them. Thanks for sharing.
Happy journey to you and your husband.

Cheers and greetings

Thank you for your comment, @tonyes , I appreciate and agree with everything you say. Especially the food and water supply, if we go hiking :))
Lesson learned 😇

Thanks to you for sharing these wonders. Happy journey. Cheers and greetings.

Greetings... A very excellent landscape, many times it is necessary to be in a place like this to breathe fresh air, where I live is extremely stifling, very hot and very flat terrain which makes there is a lack of mountainous areas that are usually very cool, the truth is that I need a place like this, I think that day I would leave there many negative charges.

This place is perfect for breathing fresh air and unwinding our minds! I think I will never get tired of going there, to this mountain! :)

I also like guiri and I try hard to avoid being one ;) And this trek looks like a great opportunity to show my level of guiriness ;)

Hahaha, guiriness 😂

In the city from the other day (Benidorm), with the purple sky, there are many guiris. Something like the whole town :D

Had those knee pains no fun but I have left them behind for shoulder pain now. It's always seems to be something as we get older.

The big snow collections reminds me of a place my work place piles a lot of snow. Not underground or insulated but rather high and it sometimes sticks around until some point in May. We take bets when its all gone, haha

Oh, it is always something, you see. But we make fun of it so it is easier to bear those things hahaha

And that looks like fun, taking bets when the pile of snow would melt entirely 😂

What fascinating sights on your pathway in the mountains! I've never heard of snow holes before, man certainly is ingenious in surviving under harsh conditions.
Wait till you get to my age after a walk like that, every bone in my body would be aching.
Little ph16 is too cute, I'm sure he was happy sitting in your cosy pocket though;)

We absolutely love going there, and pain or not, bone or muscle aching - it doesn't matter as hiking there is giving much more benefits. A complete unwinding experience. We also drink the water from that mountain, from a natural water spring. Ph16 is going with me to many places, to work, play the piano, eat cakes or walk :))

What a beautiful place to hike, I love it! But I love it! The rocks, their shapes, I see things .... no I'm not crazy, they look like faces.

I'm glad for that time your pain disappeared .... now it's knee pain.... and that Prince Hefromund was there!!!!

Thanks @mipiano!❤️

Yes, Prince Hefromund was there and agreed that those rocks could be a nice place to have his castle :D

I'm sure he would love it! Imagine how happy he would be!

I love these walks on these trails, even if I make an effort to reach my destination, such a walk relaxes me.
And of course I never do such walks if I'm hungry, I turn when I'm hungry and have nothing to eat, hehe.
Have a wonderful Sunday.

We are in the same team then: no food - no long walk 😂
Thank you and a happy Sunday to you too, @triplug

Exactly, if I don't eat my brain doesn't work, hehe.

A snow storage hole! How many interesting things in the world, and especially if they are worlds where the blue mountains stand out. I missed Hefromund, that prince needs to breathe the breeze and adventure.
I hope your knee stops hurting and you can find some time off, so needed it is.
But my goodness what beautiful scenery 😋, who could teleport there. But hey, lucky we all have you close by and you so aptly show us the wonder. Thank you...

Finally, Hefromund came out from the sleeping phase. I put him to pose in one place, and my husband warned that some squirrels could take him if I left him for a long time under the pine trees. It was better I held him in my hand 😊

That hole could be a huge teleport gate. Don't forget to invite señor Puma if you decide to jump over here. I know he would like to come. 😇

😯🥵 I don't even want to imagine if a squirrel takes it. It's so tiny... Oops, it made a hole in my heart to think about it.
I had a migraine in the wee hours of the morning. So I shouldn't jump in that hole for now.

(edit)

wait a minute... I was groggy, I mean, half asleep, where would I have to come in here, to go out through the hole? we haven't figured that portal here in Havana. Do you think Puma would be here by now if he knew the teleportation location?

A migraine? Oh, no 😑

Do you think Puma would be here by now if he knew the teleportation location?

Maybe señor Puma is already too busy searching for the portal, right @pumarte ?

Hey !! I croos it already, where are you ? Where is @nanixxx how I come to the city , smebody help me please!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Really? That was quick, well done. Now just follow the signs. First, you have to reach Benimantell- there we can pick you up. But it can be a bit tricky, as it is already dark here. I hope you can see in the dark, with your feline vision. 😁

Hahahaha I forgot to bring Pituky to show me the way 😂😂😂

Wow!... I was surprised by that story about the use of those "snow hole" as refrigerators!... Every day I learn something new here in #Hive!...

Thank you for sharing the landscape and details of this hike, it is a beautiful place and the photos are very good!... Electric bicycles!... Here they have begun to appear on rural roads!... :)) moments I will continue with my old "human-powered" bicycle from 2010 ha ha ha!... My budget is not in very good condition, but I would like one of those electric ones!... :))

I was surprised too about these snow holes haha, but thinking it better, when there is snow, that side of the mountain is in the "shade", it is the northern side of Sierra de Aitana, and it is normal it doesn't melt. In the holes like this, it easily stays for months. But they are not used anymore for that purpose. (my husband joked it could be a cool place to film a horror movie 😂)

@mipiano! Your Content Is Awesome so I just sent 1 $BBH (Bitcoin Backed Hive) to your account on behalf of @jlinaresp. (5/5)

I don't think it's age that I can't climb the mountains, I just don't think I was well prepared for it, and food and water can't be lacking. The place is beautiful. What beautiful landscapes. I really like your stories and the scenery of that beautiful place. Thanks @mipiano.

Mamani, thank you. There are beautiful places here, the same as there are in Cuba. I am in awe every time I see all that greenery on your island. I know, it is not the age (bueno, un poco sí 😂) but it is my niece that likes to say to me that getting old is awful 😂

Wow, my greetings to you and the Prince!
I loved the sceneries, and yes - some snow would make them even more impressive ;)

The snow would be cool, but it is still too early for that here in this part of Spain. Maybe we will have luck on another occasion, in winter. 😉

It feels very good to go to the mountain region, seeing such beautiful places, seeing a lot of scenic views, all these things are very relaxing for a person.

Sure they are ;)

Gorgeous views. We don't have a lot of rocky terrain here so I always enjoy seeing one. Hehe

I am glad you could enjoy these landscapes through these photos at least :)

Hermoso paisaje! Que mágica aventura! Creo que tienes que entrenar más jajaja

Sí, tengo que entrenar más jaja y sobre todo en los terrenos como es la montañana esta :)
