A Day to Remember at Menjangan Island

"Any trip is a holiday that will forever remain in your memory" — someone

David is a retired professor, and Reo, a retired naval captain, an unexpected duo that added a spark of intrigue to our dive trip in Bali. We first met them when we decided to explore the waters around Menjangan Island. What began as a casual dive soon turned into one of the most memorable experiences of our journey.

David had an air of intellectual curiosity about him, always keen to share knowledge and eager to discuss just about anything—from marine biology to history. Reo, by contrast, carried himself with the relaxed confidence of someone who had spent a lifetime navigating the open seas. Together, they made quite the pair: David with his thoughtful, measured demeanor and Reo with his quick wit and effortless charm.

Our adventure began on a perfect Bali morning, with the sky a brilliant blue and the sea calm and inviting. We boarded the dive boat and were instantly drawn into David and Reo’s orbit. Reo entertained us with lively tales from his time in the navy, including one particularly hilarious account of an ill-fated fishing expedition during a storm. David, meanwhile, thumbed through a small guidebook, enthusiastically pointing out pictures of the creatures we might encounter underwater. It was clear that the two of them had an infectious energy and a genuine love for life.

As the boat approached Menjangan Island, the excitement among the group was palpable. Reo made sure everyone was ready, and David double-checked the dive gear with the precision of a scientist. When we finally plunged beneath the surface, the beauty of the underwater world exceeded all expectations.

The first notable encounter was a bamboo shark tucked under a coral ledge. David gestured wildly to get everyone’s attention, his enthusiasm evident even through his dive mask. Reo, ever the adventurer, swam closer with his underwater camera to capture the moment. His calm demeanor and steady hand made it seem as though he’d been doing this all his life.

The underwater landscape was teeming with life. Brightly colored fish darted around intricate coral formations, and the sunlight filtering through the water added an ethereal glow to the scene. Then came the stonefish. As David pointed it out from a safe distance, Reo’s curiosity got the better of him. He swam closer than was wise, and the rest of us frantically signaled for him to back away. Reo eventually caught on and retreated, grinning sheepishly. Later, back on the boat, it became a source of endless laughter, with Reo dubbing himself “Captain Almost-Too-Close.”

The dive continued to amaze. At one point, a reef shark appeared in the distance, gliding effortlessly through the water. It was a breathtaking sight, one that silenced even Reo, who seemed momentarily lost in the majesty of the moment. But the highlight of the dive was yet to come. We swam into a massive school of tiny, transparent fish, their bodies shimmering like liquid silver in the sunlight. They moved as one, surrounding us in a surreal, dreamlike embrace. For a few minutes, it felt like we were part of the ocean itself.

After surfacing, we made our way to the Kantor Taman Nasional Menjangan for a well-deserved lunch. The food was delicious—simple yet satisfying. But the real surprise came when a wild deer wandered up to our table. The deer, seemingly accustomed to human presence, nudged Reo, clearly asking for food. Laughing, Reo broke off a piece of bread and fed it to the curious creature, much to David’s delight. “I think you’ve made a new friend,” David joked, as the deer lingered a bit longer before wandering off.

The day didn’t end there. That evening, we reunited for dinner at a charming local restaurant. The setting was cozy, the food fresh, and the company unbeatable. Over plates of grilled seafood and glasses of cold beer, the stories flowed freely. David spoke passionately about his years as a professor and the joy of mentoring students, while Reo shared more tales from his naval career. Their camaraderie was infectious, and it wasn’t long before the entire table was laughing and trading anecdotes.

As the night wore on, the conversation deepened. We talked about life, travel, and the incredible beauty of the natural world. David reflected on the importance of preserving places like Menjangan Island, while Reo emphasized the value of taking risks and embracing adventure. Their perspectives, shaped by such different life experiences, offered a rich tapestry of wisdom and humor.

By the time we said our goodbyes, it was clear that this was more than just a chance meeting. It felt as though we had made lifelong friends. David and Reo’s warmth, intelligence, and zest for life had left an indelible mark on all of us. We promised to stay in touch, knowing full well that promises like these are often made and rarely kept. But with David and Reo, it felt different. Whether in Bali, Singapore, or somewhere else in the world, we knew our paths would cross again.

As I look back on that day, I realize it wasn’t just the dive that made it special. It was the people—their stories, their laughter, their kindness. David and Reo reminded us of the power of connection, the joy of shared experiences, and the beauty of living life to the fullest. They turned a simple dive trip into a memory that will last a lifetime.

That,s all for today.

Sincerely yours

Lovely diving spot that was! Wow! So many places are not what they seem anymore, but this one looks truly like one to visit.

How are you finding the rest of Bali?

I loved it very much)
I hope to be there once
