Balneario natural El Silencio, La Guajira | [Esp][Eng]

Dentro de la gran amplitud de la Baja Guajira colombiana, se encuentra un pequeño poblado llamado Los Hornitos, conocido por contar con un tramo accesible del Río Rancherías que ha sido dispuesto como balneario natural.

Ir al Silencio es un plan muy común entre los lugareños, que acuden en cualquier ocasión disponible para refrescarse en el río y mitigar un poco el implacable calor de la región. Pero sin duda es durante los fines de semana y días festivos cuando hay más afluencia, pues personas de otros poblados y municipios cercanos se reúnen en este espacio para disfrutar de las frescas aguas del Río Rancherías.

Según mi experiencia, habiendo visitado varias veces la Guajira colombiana, resulta complicado entender en su totalidad la distribución territorial de muchas localidades colombianas, o quizás lo percibo de esa manera porque se me hace muy diferente a lo que estoy acostumbrada. En años anteriores había visitado El Silencio sin prestar mucha atención a su ubicación precisa, pero esta vez me interesé un poco más en ello porque quería escribir sobre este lugar tan encantador.

No fue tarea fácil, El Silencio se encuentra en el poblado de Los Hornitos, ubicado en el municipio de Distracción, cuya capital también se llama Distracción. No parece tan complejo de entender, pero llegar a esa deducción partiendo d una análisis sin mucha base, no fue fácil.

Inside the great amplitude of the Colombian Baja Guajira, there is a small town called Los Hornitos, known for having an accessible stretch of the Río Rancherías that has been arranged as a natural bathing place.

Going to El Silencio is a very common plan among the locals, who come on any available occasion to cool off in the river and mitigate the implacable heat of the region. But undoubtedly it is during weekends and holidays when there is more attendance, as people from other towns and nearby municipalities gather in this space to enjoy the cool waters of the Río Rancherías.

According to my experience, having visited several times the Colombian Guajira, it is complicated to understand in its totality the territorial distribution of many Colombian localities, or perhaps I perceive it that way because it is very different to what I am accustomed. In previous years I had visited El Silencio without paying much attention to its precise location, but this time I was a little more interested in it because I wanted to write about this charming place.

It wasn't an easy task, El Silencio is located in the town of Los Hornitos, placed in the municipality of Distracción, whose capital is also called Distracción. It doesn't seem so complex to understand, but to come to that deduction starting from an analysis without much foundation, it wasn't easy at all.

Con lo anterior quería aclarar que, para trasladarse desde Distracción, que es la ciudad más cercana, hasta el balneario El Silencio la opción mas popular es el llamado moto taxi, un transporte muy típico en los pueblos de la guajira que es sumamente accesible, en cuanto a precio y disponibilidad. Consta de un carruaje anclado a una moto con espacio para trasladar entre 2 a 4 personas, con un costo aproximado de 1 dólar por persona. Por este medio o yendo con vehículo propio, se alcanza el rio en tan solo 10 minutos.

Luego de transitar una carretera estrecha, rodeada de campos de arroz, algodón y espacios de explotación ganadera, se llega a la entrada del pequeño poblado de Los hornitos, en donde nos encontramos con algunas viviendas muy sencillas construidas a base de barro y piedras.

Al avanzar por la calle principal, se encuentra un paseo peatonal con un gimnasio publico y parque infantil con vistas hacia el Río Rancherías, con bancos a la sombra, dispuestos cerca de las vallas de seguridad, en donde sentarse a disfrutar de las vistas al río sería muy atractivo si el calor no fuese tan sofocante. Es posible que este espacio se utilice en su mayoría en horas de la mañana, pues es antes de medio día que las temperaturas suelen ser más agradables.

By this I meant that, to move from Distracción, which is the nearest city, to the natural bathing place El Silencio the most popular option is the moto taxi, a very typical transport in the towns of La Guajira that is extremely accessible, in terms of price and availability. It consists of a carriage anchored to a motorcycle with room to transport between 2 to 4 people, with an approximate cost of 1 dollar per person. You can reach the river in just 10 minutes by this means or going with your vehicle.

After driving along a narrow road, surrounded by rice and cotton fields and cattle ranches, we arrive at the entrance of the small village of Los Hornitos, where we find some very modest houses built of mud and stones.

As we advance along the Main Street, we find a pedestrian walkway with a public gymnasium and playground overlooking the Río Rancherías, where there are benches in the shade, arranged near the security fences, ideal for sitting and enjoying the view of the river if only the heat weren't so suffocating. It is possible that this space is mostly used in the morning hours, since it is before midday that temperatures are most pleasant.

Cuando finaliza la pequeña zona recreativa pública, comienzan a desfilar a lo largo de toda la Calle principal los distintos espacios destinados para el disfrute del ría, el moto taxi puede dejarte a la altura que desees y recomendarte algún lugar en concreto según lo que se desea hacer. Al final de la calle se encuentra una zona de aparcamiento gratuito para vehículos personales.

El balneario El Silencio cuenta con espacios públicos para el acceso y disfrute del río, tanto al principio como al final de este, sin embargo hay varios negocios apostados en los terrenos frente al río que ofrecen servicios de comidas, bebidas y equipamiento para hacer mas amena la experiencia del visitante.

Hay muchos estancos y restaurantes para elegir, la diferencia de entrar en uno de ellos es que disponen de un espacio con mesas y sillas cerca del rio, además del servicio directamente en tu mesa de las bebidas y antojos que requieras. Pero es en principio cuestión de comodidad, pues al estar conectados estos espacios con las zonas públicas, los vendedores ambulantes se pasean por toda la orilla ofreciendo bebidas, dulces y snacks, por lo que los suministros no escasean.

When the small public recreational area ends, the different spaces destined for the enjoyment of the estuary begin to appear along the whole Main Street, the moto taxi can leave you at the point that you wish and recommend you some place in specific according to what you want to do. At the end of the street there is a free parking area for personal vehicles.

El Silencio has public spaces for access and enjoyment of the river, both at the beginning and at the end of the natural bathing place, however there are several businesses set up on the riverfront grounds that offer food, beverages and equipment to make the visitor's experience more enjoyable.

There are many stalls and restaurants to choose from, the difference of entering one of them is that they have a space with tables and chairs near the river, in addition to the service directly at your table of the drinks and cravings you require. But it is in principle a matter of convenience, as these spaces are connected to the public areas, street vendors stroll along the shore offering drinks, sweets and snacks, so supplies are not scarce.

En cualquier caso, tanto si se decide entrar en uno de los negocios o entrar, sin necesidad de gastar en consumiciones, por los accesos gratuitos, como el de la Playa Baja que está nada más comenzar la zona habilitada para entrar en el rio, una vez dentro cualquier persona puede movilizarse a lo largo de toda la zona de baño, algo que es más común ver hacer a los niños, pues los adultos suelen asentarse en un espacio cercano a la orilla para hablar tranquilamente, teniendo a mano siempre la bebida y la música.

La limpieza en general no es un problema, es una zona muy concurrida pero en su mayoría los espacios privados son los que generan más desechos y se encargan perfectamente de mantener la zona despejada y cuidada. Al menos en las ocasiones en las que he ido, la zona publica también se mantiene bien cuidada, desconozco si hay personas con algún cargo publico destinado a mantener la zona, pero la consciencia de los lugareños al menos, es de cuidar ese espacio tan querido.

Durante los días festivos ocurre con frecuencia que la zona se llena rápidamente y los restaurantes del balneario se quedan sin sitio. La oferta gastronómica es prácticamente la misma en todos los locales, comidámonos típica de la zona, cervezas y aguardiente.

In any case, whether you decide to enter one of the establishments or go in without spending on drinks through the free access, such as the Playa Baja which is just at the beginning of the area enabled to enter the river, once inside anyone can move along the entire bathing area, something that is more common to see children doing, as adults usually settle in a space near the shore to talk quietly, always having at hand the drink and the music.

Cleanliness in general is not a problem, it is a very crowded area but mostly private spaces are the ones that generate more waste and are perfectly in charge of keeping the area clear and cared for. At least in the occasions in which I have gone, the public area is also well maintained, I do not know if there are people with any public function to maintain the area, but the conscience of the locals at least, is to take care of this beloved space.

During the holidays it often happens that the area fills up quickly and the restaurants of El Silencio run out of seats. The gastronomic offer is practically the same in all the restaurants, typical food of the area, beers and liquor.

Sin embargo, a pesar de que algunas veces la gente pueda quedarse sin sitio, no falta nunca el ingenio de la zona para aprovechar cualquiera de los espacios disponibles.

En esta ultima visita, fui un día en que había lugar de sobra para todo el que se acercara al rio y mucha tranquilidad en el ambiente, pero aún así me causó interés observar la forma en la que algunos visitantes se acomodaban para hacerse un espacio en la zona publica, introduciendo sillas de plástico dentro del rio para permanecer allí sentados con el agua hasta el abdomen mientras bebían despreocupadamente.

No pude evitar tomar una foto para recordar esa ocurrencia, ellos estaban muy contentos allí y sus carcajadas se escuchaban a lo lejos. Ellos crearon su propio reservado en el río sin muchas complicaciones. Relajados.

Nevertheless, even though sometimes people may run out of space, there is never a lack of ingenuity in the area to take advantage of any of the available spaces.

On this last visit, I went on a day when there was plenty of room for everyone who approached the river and a very quiet atmosphere, but I was still impressed by the way in which some visitors were accommodated to make a space in the public area, introducing plastic chairs into the river to sit there with the water up to the abdomen while drinking carelessly.

I could not help taking a picture to remember that occurrence, they were very happy there and their laughter could be heard in the distance. They had created their own little river retreat without too much hassle. So relaxed.

El emplazamiento en general es una remanso de paz. Un paisaje natural precioso y exuberante en el que es imposible no relajarse escuchando el correr de las aguas sonando contra las piedras del río. Se mezcla el paisaje salvaje y virgen que rodea al rio con los añadidos ornamentales de las personas que llevan los negocios cercanos, que han sembrado muchas flores y plantas para embellecer la zona y dar color al balneario. Quise incluir algunas fotos de la flor del platanillo, una especie de heliconia que han sembrado en varios colores cerca del río.

Yo tenía muchísimas ganas de compartir este paseo por aquí, porque me encantan los ríos. En mi niñez crecí en una zona donde abundaban los ríos y balnearios naturales, así que era muy común para mí pasar los fines de semana disfrutando del agua dulce, como se le llamaba en aquellos lugares. Es por ello que viajar a estos pueblos pequeños en donde hay ríos para disfrutar, me llena de alegría.

Soy de las personas que, una vez que llega a estos lugares, entra al agua y no sale a menos que sea absolutamente necesario. El agua de estos ríos tropicales es deliciosa, refrescante pero no helada. Según el viento que haga puede sentirse frio al salir, pero nada insoportable.

Eso fue lo que hice en este paseo, luego de asegurarme de tomar algunas fotos a los alrededores, me zambullí al agua y no salí hasta unas horas mas tarde, que decidimos buscar algo de comer. Pero si fuese por mí, hubiese permanecido ahí dentro todo el día.

The overall location is a peaceful haven. A beautiful and lush natural landscape in which it is impossible not to relax listening to the rushing of the water against the stones of the river. The wild and untouched landscape surrounding the river is mixed with the ornamental additions of the people who run the nearby businesses, who have planted many flowers and plants to beautify the area and give color to the bathing area. I wanted to include some photos of the platanillo flower, a species of heliconia that they have planted in various colors near the river.

I really wanted to share this trip here, because I love rivers. In my childhood I grew up in an area where rivers and natural spas abounded, so it was very common for me to spend the weekends enjoying the sweet water, as it was called in all those places. That is why traveling to these small towns where there are rivers to enjoy, fills me with happiness.

I am one of those people who, once I get to these places, go into the water and don't come out unless absolutely necessary. The water in these tropical rivers is delicious, refreshing but not freezing. Depending on the wind it may feel cold when you get out, but nothing unbearable.

That's what I did on this trip, after making sure to take some pictures of the surroundings, I dove into the water and didn't come out until a few hours later, when we decided to get something to eat. But if it were up to me, I would have stayed in there all day.

La aguas del balneario El Silencio son muy poco profundas, a diferencia de otros balnearios naturales apostados a lo largo del Río Rancherías que se ubican en distintos municipios. Esto hace que sea un lugar perfecto para que las familias con niños puedan acudir tranquilamente al río. La gente es muy cuidadosa, porque aunque la corriente no es tan fuerte, si fluye con la suficiente fuerza para desestabilizarte de vez en cuando, sobre todo cuando pasa por algunas de las acumulaciones de piedras sedimentadas al fondo.

Cerca de la orilla el agua no pasa de la altura de las pantorrillas, por lo que se está bien allí sentado. Más hacia la otra orilla, en donde solo hay vegetación, sí puedes conseguir profundidades de hasta un metro y medio, lugar al que suelen dirigirse los jóvenes para estar mas alejados de las multitudes y los niños pequeños.

No es un espacio para practicar la natación, a menos que seas un niño, por la falta de profundidad y lo accidentado del terreno, te puedes topar con grandes piedras que no se logran ver desde la superficie.

Las aguas son cristalinas y en el fondo arenoso se encuentran muchas piedras redondas, con una hermosa superficie pulida por el paso del agua. A mí me gustan mucho estas piedras, pero aunque intenté recolectar algunas, las perdí jugando posteriormente y no pude hacerles una foto. También hay algunos sacos blancos de arena que sirven para resguardar la orilla y delimitar algunos espacios.

The waters of El Silencio are very shallow, unlike other natural bathing areas along the Río Rancherías that are located in different municipalities. This makes it a perfect place for families with children to go safely to the river. People are very careful, because although the current is not so strong, it does flow with enough force to destabilize you from time to time, especially when it passes through some of the accumulations of sedimentary stones at the bottom.

Near the shore the water does not go above calf height, so it is fine sitting there. Further towards the other shore, where there is only vegetation, you can reach depths of up to one and a half meters, a place where young people tend to go to be farther away from the crowds and small children.

It is not a place to practice swimming, unless you are a child, because of the lack of depth and the rugged terrain, you can run into large stones that can not be seen from the surface.

The waters are crystal clear and on the sandy bottom there are many round stones, with a beautiful surface polished by the passage of water. I like these stones, but although I tried to collect some, I lost them playing later and could not take a picture of it. Some white sandbags serve to protect the shore and define some spaces.

También hay pequeños pececitos en el rio, a pesar del terrible zoom que tuve que hacer para que estos pudieran distinguirse en la foto, no quería quedarme con las ganas de señalar a estos pequeños en este blog. En la foto anterior a la ampliada, se puede observar lo bien que se camuflan en las aguas con el fondo arenoso, sin embargo no son molestos al momento de entrar al agua, ni siquiera se sienten, pero es divertido saber que estás allí compartiendo espacio de forma respetuosa con la fauna de la zona.

Los días que estuve paseando por estos pueblitos, rodeados de naturaleza y alejados de tanto ruido y ajetreo propio de las grandes ciudades, fueron un descanso exclusivo para mis sentidos, una aire distendido y lleno de calma acompañaba mis paseos y el sonido de la naturaleza me relajaba sin que necesitara esforzarme.

Mi última visita al Silencio fue una de las mejores que hecho al balneario natural, porque no era un día de mucha asistencia y no había demasiado ruido, algo que me gusta mucho. Los restaurantes cercanos ponían música típica para ambientar sus espacios y complacer a los clientes, pero no era demasiado fuerte ni parecía ser una guerra de music como a veces ocurre (a ver quién lo pone más fuerte).

Volver a ver las fotos hace que me relaje de inmediato, dándome muchas ganas de volver y recordando lo genial que es darse un chapuzón en el rio de vez en cuando.

There are also small fishes in the river, despite the terrible zoom I had to make so that they could be distinguished in the photo, I didn't want to be left with the desire to point out these little ones in this blog. In the photo before the zoomed in one, you can see how well they camouflage themselves in the waters with the sandy bottom, however they are not annoying when entering the water, you don't even feel them, but it is fun to know that you are there sharing space in a respectful way with the fauna of the area.

The days I spent traveling through these small towns, surrounded by nature and away from the noise and hustle and bustle of the big cities, were an exclusive rest for my senses, a relaxed and calm air accompanied my strolls and the sound of nature relaxed me without having to push myself.

My last visit to El Silencio was one of the best I made to the natural bathing area, because it wasn't a busy day and there wasn't too much noise, something I like very much. The nearby restaurants played typical music to set the mood and please the customers, but it wasn't too loud and it didn't seem to be a music war as sometimes happens (to see who can play it louder).

Looking at the photos again makes me relax immediately, wanting to go back and remembering how great it is to take a dip in the river from time to time.
