Krakow's churches no.11 – Church of St. Teresa of Jesus and Saint. John of the Cross

In Krakow, there are places where, strangely enough, there was a significant increase in the number of churches per unit of area. Such a place is undoubtedly the former historic district of Wesoła, especially Kopernika Street, where on a stretch of less than 500 meters you can visit 4 churches. Once in this area, I decided to visit two of the four temples located on this street. I will be the first to describe the church of St. Teresa of Jesus and Saint. John of the Cross, but I must admit that I am describing it even though I did not attend mass there. I didn't go to mass, because in the church of Saint Teresa there is only one mass a day and at a rather ungodly hour. On weekdays it is 6:30 a.m. and on Sundays, 9:00 a.m. The rest of the time the church is closed and the interior can only be viewed from behind a steel grate, which is a pity because the church, built in the late Baroque style between 1715 and 1725, is very attractive from what I could see. The temple is built on a Greek cross plan and consists of a nave, a chancel and two side aisles. After entering the interior of the church, the main attraction is the baroque altar made of black Dębnik marble, in the center of which there is a painting of St. Teresa of Avila. In addition to the altar, inside the church there is also a Baroque pulpit and a Gothic sculpture of Madonna and Child, made around 1390.
There is a convent of the Discalced Carmelites next to the church and it is the oldest convent of this order in Poland. In accordance with their monastic rule, nuns do not conduct external activities in schools, hospitals or social welfare homes, as nuns are often wont to do, but they mainly devote themselves to praying for the intentions of the Church and the world. The monastery is associated with the incredibly shocking story of the nun Barbara Ubryk, who joined the convent as a young woman in 1840 and, unfortunately, was mentally ill. According to the story, when Barbara Ubryk was already in the Carmelite convent in Krakow, her mental illness worsened, which made the lives of the other nuns very difficult. Her illness first manifested itself in morbid piety. Attempts were made to treat the poor woman with the most innovative medical methods at that time, i.e. bloodletting. As you can guess, this treatment had no effect, and as the disease worsened, one day in 1848 the nun barricaded herself in her cell and refused to come out. After forcing her way inside, the other nuns saw her naked, dancing and singing. This was too much for the monastery's rules, so it was decided to move her to solitary confinement, where she was to spend the next 21 years. Over time, the conditions of her stay became increasingly worse, because, as it was explained, the window in the room had to be bricked up because the Nun stood naked in the window and made obscene gestures, the furniture was taken out of the room because Barbara was breaking the bed and throwing pieces of it at the nuns, who they wanted to feed her, wash her, etc. Barbara was kept in such difficult conditions for 21 years, until in 1869 the Krakow police received an anonymous letter informing about this shocking case. The end of the case was that Barbara Ubryk was released and placed in a psychiatric hospital, none of the nuns taking care of the imprisoned woman was convicted, because the methods of treating mentally ill patients at that time were not much different from what happened to the patient, and in Krakow upon hearing about this This scandalous event led to riots against the clergy. Several windows in Krakow monasteries were broken, there were probably many verbal quarrels with the clergy, several unfavorable articles were written and the matter died.

W Krakowie można wskazać miejsca, gdzie dziwnym trafem doszło do zdecydowanego zagęszczenia liczby kościołów przypadających na jednostkę powierzchni. Takim miejscem bez wątpienia jest dawna historyczna dzielnica Wesoła, a zwłaszcza ulica Kopernika, gdzie na odcinku o długości niecałych 500 metrów można odwiedzić 4 kościoły. Będąc kiedyś w tej okolicy postanowiłem odwiedzić dwie z czterech świątyń znajdujących się na tej ulicy. Jako pierwszy opisze kościół św. Teresy od Jezusa i św. Jana od Krzyża, ale musze tutaj się przyznać, że opisuje go pomimo tego, że nie byłem tam na mszy. Nie byłem na mszy, ponieważ w kościele pod wezwaniem Świętej Teresy odbywa się wyłącznie jedna msza dziennie i to o dość nieludzkiej porze. W dni powszednie jest to 6:30, a w niedziele, 9:00. Przez pozostały czas kościół jest zamknięty i wnętrze można oglądać tylko zza stalowej kraty, a szkoda, bo ten zbudowany w latach 1715-1725 w stylu późno barkowym, z tego co udało mi się podejrzeć, jest bardzo atrakcyjny. Świątynia zbudowana jest na planie krzyża greckiego złożona z nawy, prezbiterium oraz dwóch naw bocznych. Główną uwagę po wejściu do wnętrza kościoła przyciąga barokowy ołtarz, wykonany z czarnego marmuru dębnickiego, w centrum którego widnieje obraz św. Teresy z Avila. Poza ołtarzem we wnętrzu kościoła znajduje się także barokowa ambona, oraz gotycka rzeźba Madonny z Dzieciątkiem, wykonana około 1390 r.
Przy kościele znajduje się klasztor Karmelitanek Bosych i jest on najstarszym klasztorem tego zgromadzenia w Polsce. Siostry zakonne zgodnie ze swoją regułą klasztorną nie prowadzą zewnętrznej działalności w szkołach, szpitalach czy domach pomocy społecznej, jak to często mają w zwyczaju zakonnice, ale w głównej mierze poświęcają się modlitwie w intencjach Kościoła i świata. Z klasztorem związana jest niesłychanie bulwersująca historia zakonnicy Barbary Ubryk, która jako młoda kobieta w roku 1840 wstąpiła do zakonu i dla jej nieszczęścia była osobą chorą umysłowo. Zgodnie z przekazem gdy Barbara Ubryk była już w krakowskim klasztorze karmelitanek jej choroba psychiczna uległa nasileniu, co bardzo uprzykrzało życie pozostałym zakonnicom. Jej choroba wpierw przejawiała się chorobliwą pobożnością. Biedaczkę próbowano leczyć najbardziej innowacyjnymi na tamte czasy metodami medycznymi, czyli poprzez upuszczania krwi. Jak można się domyślić, to leczenie nie przyniosło efektu, a w skutek nasilenia choroby pewnego dnia w roku 1848 zakonnica zabarykadowała się w swojej celi i nie chciała wyjść. Po siłowym wtargnięciu do środka pozostałe siostry zakonne ujrzały ją nagą, tańczącą i śpiewającą. To było już za dużo jak na regułę klasztoru, więc zdecydowano się przenieść ją do karceru, w którym miała spędzić następne 21 lat. Z czas jej warunki pobytu stawały się coraz gorsze, ponieważ jak tłumaczono, okno w pokoju musiało zostać zamurowane, bo Zakonnica stawała naga w oknie i wykonywała nieprzyzwoite gesty, meble zostały wyniesione z pokoju, bo Barbara rozbijała be i rzucała ich elementami w zakonnice, które chciały ją nakarmić, umyć itp. W takich ciężkich warunkach, Barbara była przetrzymywana przez 21 lat, do czasu, aż w roku 1869 do krakowskiej policji wpłyną anonimowy list, informujący o tej bulwersującej sprawie. Finał sprawy był taki, że Barbara Ubryk została wypuszczona i umieszczona w szpitalu psychiatrycznym, żadna z zakonnic opiekująca się uwięzioną nie została skazana, no bo przecież ówczesne metody leczenia chorych psychicznie nie różniły się wiele od tego co spotkało chorą, a w Krakowie na wieść o tym skandalicznym zdarzeniu powstały rozruchy przeciwko duchowieństwu. Wybito kilka szyb w krakowskich klasztorach, zapewne doszło, to wielu słownych utarczków z duchownymi, napisano kilka nieprzychylnych artykułów no i sprawa umarła.
