My long weekend in London no. 1 – The Shard

Not very often, but once in a while I like to go on a trip to a city and admire its charms for the entire weekend. In the winter of this year, the decision was made to go to London in late spring. It so happened that we landed at the second largest airport, not only in London, but also in the whole of Great Britain, i.e. London-Gatwick airport. The first London curiosity is that there are as many as 7 airports in London, of which Heathrow Airport is the largest airport in Europe and the 4th largest airport in the world. It serves more passengers than all airports in Poland combined! The second largest airport in London is Gatwick Airport and, what's more, it is the 8th largest airport in Europe. London also has the 20th largest airport in Europe, Stansted Airport. So as you can see, the sky over London is probably one of the busiest places in the world. We took the Southern train from Gatwick Airport to Croydon, the district of London where we found our accommodation, and it was the first very positive experience with London's extremely fast and efficient public transport. As it was already quite late that day, we didn't visit any place in London but stayed in our apartment in Croydon.

Niezbyt często, ale jednak raz na jakiś czas lubię się wybrać na wycieczkę do jakiegoś miasta i przez cały weekend podziwiać tylko i wyłącznie jego uroki. Zimą tego roku zapadła decyzja, aby późną wiosną pojechać do Londynu. Złożyło się tak, że lądowaliśmy na drugim największym lotnisku Nie tylko w Londynie, ale i w całej Wielkiej Brytanii czyli na lotnisku Londyn-Gatwick. Pierwszą Londyńska ciekawostką, jest to, że w Londynie znajduje się aż 7 portów lotniczych, z czego Heathrow Airport jest największym lotniskiem w Europie, oraz 4 największym lotniskiem na świecie. Obsługuje ono więcej pasażerów niż wszystkie porty lotnicze w Polsce razem wzięte! Drugim największym portem lotniczym w Londynie jest Gatwick Airport i co więcej jest ono 8 największym lotniskiem w Europie. W Londynie jest również 20 największe lotnisko w Europie czyli Stansted Airport. Więc jak widać niebo nad Londynem jest chyba jednym z najbardziej ruchliwych miejsc na świecie. Z Gatwick Airport do Croydon, czyli dzielnicy Londynu, w której znaleźliśmy nasz nocleg dojechaliśmy pociągiem Southern i było to pierwsze bardzo pozytywne doświadczenie z niezwykle szybką i sprawną komunikacją zbiorową Londynu. Ponieważ było już dość późno tego dnia nie odwiedziliśmy już żadnego miejsca w Londynie tylko pozostaliśmy w naszym mieszkaniu w Croydon.

On the second day, early in the morning, we went again to East Croydon railway station, from which trains depart literally every few minutes towards Central London, or rather two places: London Bridge station and Victoria station. We decided it would be better to go to London Bridge station and start exploring the city there. After a 20-minute train ride, we arrived at a huge modern station with probably 10 platforms. It took us a while to leave this huge station, but when we finally got out onto the street, I just stopped dead in my tracks. Right next to me was the glass wall of The Shard skyscraper, over 300 meters high. Translated from English, The Shard means a shard (of glass), although for me the building is more similar to a splinter. Commissioned in 2012, it was the tallest building in Europe and only ten years later it was overtaken by the Varso Tower in Warsaw. Yes, earlier in the competition for the title of the tallest building in Europe, The Shard was overtaken by several buildings in Moscow and one of the tallest in St. Petersburg, but for some time Russia has excluded itself from the group of European countries and now I personally do not include them in any ranking.
The Shard has 72 floors, of which there are offices on the 28th floor, and restaurants above them on floors 31 to 33. There is a hotel above the restaurant on 18 floors. In this hotel, the view from the window must be amazing, but unfortunately I won't be able to afford to stay there any time soon, because the price for one night is about 700 pounds, but if something ever changed in my budget, for example, the Hive rate skyrocketed and tenfold exceeded the current ATH, I promise immediately that I will buy a ticket to London on the same day and make a reservation in this hotel. There are 12 floors above the hotel for apartments, and above the apartments on floors 65 and above there is an observation deck for visitors.

Drugiego dnia o wczesnym poranku ponownie udaliśmy się na dworzec kolejowy East Croydon, z którego dosłownie co kilka minut odjeżdżają pociągi w kierunku Centrum Londynu, a właściwie dwóch miejsc: stacji London Bridge i stacji Victoria. Uznaliśmy, że lepiej będzie udać się na stację London Bridge i tam zacząć zwiedzanie miasta. Po 20 minutach jazdy pociągiem dotarliśmy na ogromną nowoczesną stację, na której jest chyba z 10 peronów. Chwilę czasu zajęło nam wyjście z tego ogromnego dworca, ale gdy wreszcie wyszliśmy na ulicę po prostu stanąłem jak wryty. Tuż obok mnie znajdowała się wysoka na ponad 300 metrów szklana ściana wieżowca The Shard. Tłumacząc z języka angielskiego The Shard oznacza odłamek (szkła), choć dla mnie budynek jest bardziej podobny do drzazgi. Oddany do użytku w roku 2012 był najwyższym budynkiem w Europie i dopiero po dziesięciu latach został wyprzedzony przez Warszawski Varso Tower. Owszem wcześniej w rywalizacji o tytuł najwyższego budynku w Europie The Shard był wyprzedzany, przez kilka budynków w Moskwie i jeden najwyższy z Petersburga, ale od jakiegoś czasu Rosja wykluczyła się z grona państw Europejskich i teraz osobiście nie uwzględniam ich w jakimkolwiek zestawieniu.
The Shard liczy 72 kondygnacje z czego do 28 piętra mieszczą się pomieszczenia biurowe, nad nimi na piętrach od numeru 31 do numeru 33 znajdują się restauracje. Nad restauracja na 18 piętrach znajduje się hotel. W tym hotelu widok z okna musi być niesamowity, ale niestety nieprędko będzie mnie stać na nocleg w nim, ponieważ cena za jedną noc wynosi około 700 funtów, ale gdyby kiedyś cos się zmieniło w moim budżecie, na przykład kurs Hive wystrzelił w górę i dziesięciokrotnie przebił dotychczasowe ATH, z miejsca obiecuję, że tego samego dnia kupie bilet do Londynu i zrobię rezerwację w tym hotelu. Ponad hotelem znajduje się 12 pięter przeznaczonych na apartamenty, a ponad apartamentami na piętrze 65 i wyższych mieści się taras widokowy przeznaczony dla zwiedzających.

Interestingly, the pace of construction of the building was, in my opinion, record-breaking. In 2008, the demolition of the existing buildings began, construction works began in March 2009, in the fall of the same year, foundation works were completed and concreting of subsequent floors began, with an average pace of one floor per week. In December 2010, the concreting of the skyscraper was completed, and the whole thing was ready for the official opening on July 5, 2012. The opening ceremony was attended by, among others, the Prime Minister of Qatar, Hamad ibn Jassim ibn Jabra al-Sani, and Andrew, Duke of York. The investor of this building is Mace Group, which has so far built the famous London Eye, Tottenham's stadium and the Dangleway cable car over the Thames. He initially spent 350 million pounds on the construction of The Shard, but as is usually the case, as time passed and construction progressed, he had to add the missing 85 million dollars.
It must be admitted that The Shard is not an ordinary, typical skyscraper, but today it has become one of the symbols of London and this happened thanks to the Italian architect Renzo Piano, who was responsible for this amazing project. The number of awards and distinctions this outstanding architect received in his career is incalculable, but one of them simply needs to be mentioned. In 1998, he was awarded the Pritzker Prize, which made him one of the 50 most outstanding contemporary architects.

Co ciekawe tempo wznoszenia budynku było w mojej ocenie rekordowe. W roku 2008 rozpoczęto wyburzenia istniejących budynków, rozpoczęcie robót budowlanych nastąpiło w marcu 2009 roku, jesienią tego samego roku zakończono prace fundamentowe i zaczęto betonowanie kolejnych pięter, gdzie średnie tempo wynosiło jedna kondygnacja na tydzień. W grudniu 2010 roku zakończono betonowanie wieżowca, a całość gotowa do oficjalnego otwarcia była 5 lipca 2012 roku. W uroczystości otwarcia udział wziął między innymi premier Kataru, Hamada ibn Dżassima ibn Dżabra as-Saniego, Andrzej, książę Yorku. Inwestorem tego budynku jest Mace Group, który dotychczas zbudował w tym mieście zbudował słynne koło London Eye, stadion drużyny Tottenham czy kolejkę linowa nad Tamizą Dangleway. Na budowę The Shard wyłożył najpierw 350 milionów funtów, ale jak to zwykle bywa wraz z upływem czasu i postępem budowy musiał dołożyć brakujące 85 milionów dolarów.
Trzeba przyznać, że The Shard nie jest zwykłym typowym wieżowcem, tylko już dzisiaj stał się jednym z symboli Londynu i stało się tak za sprawą włoskiego architekta Renzo Piano który był odpowiedzialny za ten niesamowity projekt. Ilość nagród i wyróżnień które otrzymał ten wybitny architekt w swojej karierze jest niepoliczalna, ale o jednej z nich po prostu trzeba wspomnieć. W 1998 roku nagrodzono go Nagrodą Pritzkera co sprawiło, że trafił do grona niespełna 50 najwybitniejszych współczesnych architektów.
