My long weekend in London no. 3 – Tower Bridge

After a few hours spent on the right bank of the Thames, it was time to go to its left bank, and if you are to cross the Thames in London for the first time, it is obvious that you have to do it on the most iconic bridge of this city, i.e. Tower Bridge.
In the beginning, the bridge was opened up to 20 times a day, but now the average number of openings is just over twice a day. On the one hand, I had a great desire to sit comfortably on a bench on the bank of the Thames and wait a few hours for this amazing spectacle during which two spans weighing 1,200 tons each rise to almost vertical and provide clearance for ships up to 40 m high above the water level of the Thames. . The history of the bridge's construction dates back to 1872, when members of the English Parliament proposed a plan to improve traffic in London by building a new connection between both banks of the Thames. The plan was strongly criticized by the management of the Tower of London, who feared that the panorama from the castle walls would be significantly disturbed. A compromise was reached by ensuring that the style of the bridge would harmoniously match the style of the Tower Castle. It is thanks to this that Tower Bridge owes its unique architectural form in the Victorian style, the main element of which are two towers connected by a lower lifting platform and an upper platform intended for pedestrians. The construction was completed in 1894 and at that time the bridge was painted mainly in beige and gray colors. Only in 1977, on the 25th anniversary of the coronation of Elizabeth II, was it repainted in the colors: blue, white and red, referring to the colors of the British flag.
The opening and closing of the Tower Bridge has historically caused numerous interesting incidents, the funniest of which, in my opinion, was the one in May 1997, when the opening of the bridge interrupted a column of cars in which US President Bill Clinton was driving. A helicopter has flown under the Tower Bridge many times, and recently two daredevils, Marco Fürst and Marco Waltenspiel, were the first people to fly under the bridge and then land by parachute. Po kilku godzinach spędzonych na prawym brzegu Tamizy przyszła pora aby przejść na jej lewy brzeg no i jeśli ma się przechodzić przez Tamizę w Londynie po raz pierwszy, to oczywiste jest, że trzeba to zrobić po najbardziej ikonicznym moście tego miasta, czyli Tower Bridge.
Na początku most był otwierany nawet 20 razy dziennie, a teraz średnia liczba otwarć wynosi nieco ponad dwa razy na dzień. Z jednej strony miałem ogromna ochotę usiąść sobie wygodnie na ławeczce nad brzegiem Tamizy i czekać kilka godzin na ten niesamowity spektakl podczas którego dwa ważące po 1200 ton przęsła podnoszą się do niemal pionu i uwalniają prześwit dla statków o wysokości wynoszącej nawet 40m ponad poziom zwierciadła wody Tamizy. Historia budowy mostu sięga roku 1872 kiedy to wśród członków angielskiego parlamentu pojawił się plan usprawnienia ruchu w Londynie poprzez budowę nowego połączenia obu brzegów Tamizy. Plan został mocno skrytykowany przez zarząd zamku Tower of London, który obawiał się, że zostanie mocno zaburzona panorama rozpościerająca się z murów zamku. Osiągnięto kompromis poprzez zagwarantowanie, że stylistyka mostu będzie harmonijnie pasowała do stylu zamku Tower. Właśnie dzięki temu Tower Bridge zawdzięcza swoją niepodrabialną formę architektoniczną w stylu wiktoriańskim, której głównym elementem są dwie wieże połączone dolnym podnoszonym pomostem, oraz górnym pomostem przeznaczonym dla pieszych. Budowę ukończono w roku 1894 i wówczas most był pomalowany głownie w kolory beżu i szarości. Dopiero w roku 1977, w 25 rocznicę koronowania Elżbiety II przemalowano go na kolory: niebieski, biały i czerwony nawiązujące do kolorów flagi Wielkiej Brytanii.
Otwieranie i zamykanie się mostu Tower w historii powodowało liczne ciekawe incydenty, z których najśmieszniejszym w mojej ocenie był ten z maja roku 1997 kiedy to otwarcie się mostu przerwało kolumnę samochodów w której jechał prezydent Stanów Zjednoczonych Bill Clinton. Pod mostem Tower wielokrotnie przelatywano samolotem helikopterem czy tak jak ostatnio dwóje śmiałków Marco Fürst i Marco Waltenspiel jako pierwsi ludzie przelecieli pod mostem, po czym wylądowali na spadochronie.
