“El Peñón” Refuge

A few days ago I was visiting the Argentine province of La Rioja. Landscapes worthy of admiration and at a height above sea level that takes your breath away.
We started the trip by staying in a small town called Vinchina to visit the surrounding area. Vinchina is the last town before the border with Chile.
We left Vinchina very early in the morning after having our breakfast. We went along national route 76, we were heading towards Laguna Brava, but first we passed through El Refugio El Peñón. We reached it after traveling around 100 km through some very impressive landscapes. The climate is very arid, typical of altitudes greater than 4000 m above sea level. n. m. and with great thermal amplitude. We had plenty of shelter, a good supply of water and some food. A local guide accompanied us, since tourists are not allowed to get there alone, it is for safety reasons. The climate is very extreme, the altitude and the lack of oxygen affect and can cause what is called altitude sickness. That is why it is necessary to walk slowly, make slow movements and drink plenty of water.

Hace unos días atrás estuve de visita por la provincia argentina de La Rioja. Unos paisajes dignos de admiración y a una altura sobre el nivel del mar que quita el aliento.
Comenzamos el viaje alojándonos en un pequeño pueblo llamado Vinchina para visitar los alrededores. Vinchina es el último pueblo antes de la frontera con Chile.
Salimos de Vinchina muy temprano por la mañana luego de tomar nuestro desayuno. Fuimos por la ruta nacional 76, nos dirigíamos hacia Laguna Brava, pero antes pasamos por El Refugio El Peñón. Llegamos hasta él luego de recorrer alrededor de 100 Km atravesando unos paisajes muy impresionantes. El clima es muy árido, típico de las alturas mayores a los 4000 m s. n. m. y con gran amplitud térmica. Llevábamos bastante abrigo, una buena provisión de agua y algo de comida. Un guía local nos acompañaba, ya que no se les permite a los turistas llegar solos hasta allí, es por cuestiones de seguridad. El clima es muy extremo, la altura y la falta de oxígeno afectan y puede provocar lo que se llama mal de altura. Por eso es necesario andar despacio, hacer movimientos lentos y tomar mucha agua.

After a few hours of traveling by truck we arrived at the "El Peñón" Shelter. I tell you the story of these strange shelters. Between the years 1864 and 1873, to ensure the passage of the muleteers taking the cattle to Chile, several stone shelters were built in the region. They say that they were built about 30 km from each other, because that was the distance that a shepherd could travel with his livestock in one day. They are made of stone and have a strange shape. They are circular in plan, with a dome-shaped roof, with a single side entrance that protects the interior from the rigors of the wind. It has a ventilation hole at the top of the roof. They were used until 1960, that is, they were in use for about 150 years.

Después de unas horas de viaje en camioneta llegamos al Refugio "El Peñón". Les cuento la historia de estos extraños refugios. Entre los años 1864 y 1873, para asegurar el paso de los arrieros que llevaban el ganado hacia Chile, se construyeron varios refugios de piedra en la región. Dicen que se construyeron a unos 30 km uno del otro, porque esa era la distancia que podía recorrer un pastor con su ganado en un día. Son de piedra y tienen una extraña forma. Son de planta circular, con un techo en forma de cúpula, con una sola entrada de costado que protege el interior de los rigores del viento. Cuenta con un orificio de ventilación en la cima del techo. Se los utilizó hasta 1960, es decir, estuvieron en uso unos 150 años.

It was used as a living room to protect from inclement weather by the muleteers who drove cattle to Chile along the “Camino de los Toros” in the last century.
It belongs to the Central Battery, route for the herds coming from Vinchina and Jagüé.

Fue utilizado como sala / habitación para protegerse de las inclemencias del tiempo por los arrieros que por el “Camino de los Toros” arreaban ganado hacia Chile en el siglo pasado.
Pertenece a la Bateria Centro, derrotero de los arreos provenientes de Vinchina y Jagüé.
Distancia a Ref. Laguna Brava: 25 km – 3612 msnm

I don't know how many of these shelters are still left, my visit was only to one of them. The others are not so close to the road so we could not visit them.
Something that surprised us all were these little birds that approached us. They were not shy at all, so I was able to take several photographs of them.

No sé cuantos de estos refugios quedan todavía, mi visita sólo fue a uno de ellos. Los otros no quedan tan cerca del camino por lo tanto no pudimos visitarlos.
Algo que nos sorprendió a todos fueron estos pequeños pajaritos que se nos acercaron. No eran nada tímidos, por ello pude tomarles varias fotografías.
